a PPU card is very interesting as it sets a new standard. Suddenly all other games then PPU accellerated ones seem static. Exciting times for a PC enthusiast :)
The G80 is capable of physics accelleration but the geometry shader has to share the horsepower with pixel shading and vertex shading, so if you bump up the resolution you are fsckd. And who knows how specialized the PhysX PPU is, compared to a unified shader arcitechture.
The physics foliage looks fine in bet on soldier and that is a pretty old game; Crytek probably didn't want to force their audience to adopt new hardware to run their game. Granted everyone but the enthusiast crowed are going to have to upgrade for Crysis anyway :)
Ageia is first to have real interactive physics, but i don't know if MS will approve their propritary standard. They have broken Creatives propritary EAX support in Vista by removing DirectSound HAL, making your X-Fi awesome DSP and EAX 5.0 unused.
Maybe Ageia will be like 3dfx, showing us amazing possibilities and directing people away from fillrate and texture effects (read: GPU) and creating a market for a PPU. NVIDIA and ATI are scared i think.
Of course they are scared, they are releasing monstrously powerful hardware like the G80 and quad SLI with absolutely nothing in the market that actually utilizes the performance to justify its early adoption. Trying to find new ways to use the GPU to justify needing their high end GPUs and SLI has become their focus, using the GPUs to emulate physics is just one of them.
Can it be done? Yes, but is it the most effective way of doing it? No, especially with the whole of Havok FX being bugged.
