Josef Hassid has that rarest of musical abilities: to give each individual note its own unique personality, life, and place in the universe; related with supreme sensitivity and beauty to the other notes of the piece.
This violin seemed to have a separate voice for every note.See how each note has it`s own kind of sadness and yearning . The notes have a fascinating hard edge too similar to Casals` cello. Hassid proved the saying--"The good die young". More a Dark chocolate version than Milk chocolate. Magnificent.
Nice playing but the best, bar none is Kreisler's version. Someone commented that Hassid was the best violinist in 200 years. This is from Kreisler's comparison of Heifetz - "a violinist who comes along in 100 years" and Hassid - "a violinist who comes along in 200 years." (No exact) A humble comment from Kreisler who comes along once, period. Also a slam on Heifetz. Does anyone think he believes those 2 were better than Joachim, Ysaye, etc.?
@paulostroff99 Listened to Hirschhorn, good facility, shaky at times, don't like vibrato or pressed sound. For true virtuosity, listen to Prihoda, Jan Kubelik, von Vecsey, Sarasate, etc. Rabin has better tone but too mannered and not in the league of Kreisler, but who is?
Yes it is on the fast side--a passionate piece played by a young, passionate intense man. Certainly not a "meditation"--more like an ardent cry. Easy to read too much into this regarding his mental instability.
Would he have played it more serenely as an older man?
I adore Heifetz andElman but I started to tear at the entrance.Something almost indefinable in te quality of this violinist I didn't even know .I was searching for Zimbalist.I thought Elman would be the most emotional but this stabbed my heart immediately!
This is probably the best one that I have heard. It is from a tormented soul, passionate and disturbed. It has so much depth in this piece. Exceptional. But you need to listen to Yo-Yo Ma's version after this just to calm down.
@tcenrt Yes, Yo-Yo Ma's version is beautiful. Have you experienced "Meditation" from Thais by "Concerto Under the Stars" by 101 Strings here on YouTube. It is truly beautiful too.
I listened to 5 or 6 violinists, may be more. Best of all I liked Kreisler (the purest sound) and Hassid. But Meditaion of Kreisler is that of an experienced, wise man and Hassid's is all that is said earlier by hakmirchai.Very impressive!
I just listened to Kreisler, Elman, and Hassid playing this piece. Certainly each is beautiful in its own way but Hassid'sis by far the most excitic, dramatic, and passionate. You can almost hear the mental illness ready to set in.
I was thinking that while the tone is goregous there is something distubing that bothers me that I can't put my finger on--I think its the phrasing and timing, but it pains me to hear it (though I do think he plays beautifully it just really disturbs me)
@OriginalMoonbeam I know what you mean. Believe the tempo overall is a bit too fast and although he brings all the feeling, it seems choppy. But I agree that it is the best version I have heard thus far, except "Concerto Under the Stars" by 101 Strings which is here on YouTube.

Probably the most tragic story of a young musician thatb had everything to become one of the best players of this era.
It did not happen. Only one year after this recording he was completely lost. This is his legacy.
