Ask average young black women? The first things they mention have NOTHING to do with character("chocolate, dreads, good skin, body, nice smile, MONEY(LOTS)-in that order). Then they add things like tattoos, tall and "gangsta". "Honest" comes in at the very end.

Many young black woman don't know their role in the household...and its not about cooking and cleaning but their role as the queen to the king. Many become single mothers because they run the man away..then teach the child to hate the father cuz he ran out on them. Many black woman have egos, this causes a clash. Many black woman don't see the importance of having a man in the household besides his income. Its hard for all races to stay together, but our race has a lot of extra baggage.

The reason why these views exist today is because the environment plays a major role on many teens opinions. 90% of girls in low income areas think like this...but not 90% of all ybf. This is why their role models are on TV, mothers teach girls to go for money...another error, woman don't know their worth or position.

So the question is where did these opinions come from? Most likely it came from the mothers/environment where have a father in the household is rare. The boys were taught by woman hence their respect for the woman, the females were taught by woman...who may not have "directly" taught them to respect men and may have indirectly taught them to disrespect men. Men share the blame too, its the whole family structure if the father was in the household these young ladies wouldn't think they way they did. I read this book some time ago and it hits many points right on. Point well made.You're right about how a lot BW have the wrong idea in mind about the correct meaning of a strong and independent woman.Especially when it comes to marriage...no one is independent of each other.Women in general need to understand that because not many men if at all want a woman with that way of thinking because she won't be willing to submit which she is supposed to do in a marriage.

Its called lack of structure and stability mentally and it shows in their list in the the form that it was written down to the items on the list. I just read all the above comments. Interesting to see the outside perspective. This was the first time any of these teens had the chance to openly speak about the other sex with a facilitator. The purpose of the workshop was to allow the participants the space to share & analyze their thoughts. At the end of the 2hr session both the young men & women gained an understanding about their preprogrammed train of thought. Tupac wrote a song about the Rose that grew from concrete, check it out!

These are pretty much the average Black girl of today. The Black HS girls I taught would have said pretty much the same things as they did.

My kids come from a "middle class" area. The school they go to is an "A rated" Florida school, yet there is almost no difference in beliefs between many of my female students and these young Black females.

This made me depressed!
