  • I used to play this with my mom when i was 5... Memories...

  • What exactly is choppy or slow on the N64? I have owned both ports since they came out and I have only noticed weapon animation on the N64 being choppy, The games speed seem identical. I have only the UK PAL versions though. Is the NTSC version slower? This can happen occassionally like the Jap version of Doom for Saturn runs perfectly unlike UK and US versions and the German PAL Quake 4 is faster than the UK Pal (which makes little sense) Just wondered thanks!

  • They are both decent ports. What kills the N64's version is that it was that Quake 2 was heavily crammed into a cart unlike the PS1. I guess that the N64 had to decompress on the fly textures and other crap and that's why it runs a bit choppy.

  • @zombee38 I agree, I enjoy both ports. The N64 looks flatter than the PSX graphically but the game has several features (blisfully ignored by many) that the PSX lacks. Not to mention they are basically two seperate games! Both Quake 1 and 2 on N64 are actually graphically more accurate to the original game than the PSX and Saturn games are. I do really enjoy all ports of these games though.

  • last stand in quake 2, i love this game

  • N64 it's way better than PS1, WAY better (in graphics, games, and all).

  • I remember being quite amazed seeing this run on the PS1.

  • based on the video the playstation 1 has the better graphics. Yes, the ps1 has no filter like the n64 to blur the pixelization of the game, but, the ps1 is more colorful and has more texture detail. The n64 graphics look dull. Same with the ps2. The ps2 game textures have detail and better rendered than the Gamecube which again the majority of textures are blurred when 5 feet away from ground or walls etc..., but the gamecube has better lighting.

  • Both versions are great, however, the PlayStation version has better lighting effects, higher polygon count enemies, and stays also more true to the PC original.

Both versions run very smooth and have awesome deathmatch modes.

  • Playstation is the best in this game!.. Rite?

  • Holy crap, the PS1 version actually runs THAT smooth?

  • Anyone notice that the technically superior console always gets the worst support?

    Examples: N64, Xbox, PS3

  • @77guacamole

    YES.

  • @77guacamole Absolutely...

Perfect Dark on N64 (withe RAM upgrade0, Riddick on XBox1, and Killzone 3 on PS3 really take advantage of their hardware limits. Don't forget about GameCube, which pulled off Rogue Leader at LAUNCH!

  • @77guacamole n64, xbox, dreamcast would be the examples ps3 +or- like xbox360

  • @77guacamole Umm, PS3 gets more support than the Wii.

  • @77guacamole

    reasons:

n64 = missing a cd rom :/, cd roms were the cool thing back then.

xbox = microsoft comes aboard the game industry

ps3 = limited in ram, when the x360 can swap its ram around

  • The campaign and multiplayer on PS1 are SICK ( I never had the 64 version). The only thing I didn't like about the PS1 version was the frequent and annoying load times

  • Quake 2 was a SICK game. I still have the disc for PS1. It's still one of the best shooters ever made.

  • One thing I will say about these PS1 vs N64 graphics videos is that PS1 graphics having no z-buffering (except Crash Bandicoot 2 and its sequels, to my knowledge), no mipmapping/perspective correction on the textures and no alpha channel meant that it's basically just raw polygons & raw unfiltered textures so on a big screen and on your tv it will look MUCH worse than on a compressed video, and all the advantages of N64's filtered graphics won't be seen on Youtube comparisons. PS1 Quake wins tho

  • @cannotbebothered100 exactly :)

  • I'm sorry, but 64 fails for the sole reasons that the amount of gun anims are worse then Quake 1. The weapons just don't feel good in that version.

  • Does ps1 version has more fps than n64???

  • nintendo 64 is only 11 mb and PS1 is about 300mb..

But as a rule N64 have better graphics usually if you remember 007.

  • I'm at a loss how there's people saying the 64 version is better. I love me some Conkers Bad Fur day and everything but Quake 2 is just hands down better on PSOne, the 64 has muddy textures, choppy animations, lack of good music. What's better? Lack of load times? That's great, but when the loading is done the PSOne is better.

  • The Playstation version is by far the better one. PS version is more fast paced, smoother (look at the damn weapon animations!) and MUCH more faithful to the original PC version. The overall graphics may be better on N64 but they don't make a game. As a child i had (and still have) the Playstation and my friend had an N64 and we both had our Quake IIs. Guess which version was played more? Thats right.

N64 may have more power, but you can't fully power a monster like Quake II with a cartridge.

  • quake de ps1 é bem melhor

  • Yes agree ps1 wins ,... N64 ran choppy

  • Goood bless everyone who play this game on PS One.

    I was crazy angry sometimes:)

  • ps1 wins

  • I take it the guards you kill in this were the marines but obviously infected or some sort.

  • if i could, i would play the PS version because of the music.. i mean i love the music that they have for the quake 2 game on the PC and the music fomr the PS one is awesome. but the one for the N64 is more haunting

  • A 32 bit console vs a 64 bit console. Just a thought. But I think it's all personal preference. I love the PSX when it comes to longer and more action packed games, such MegamanX. N64 is better with platformers and family based titles like Mario, Zelda, and Conker.

There are games that I love with both consoles though, such as MegaMan Legends (MegaMan 64). I guess it's just the games, not the requirements. Each exclusive games were built for those systems specifically.

  • Oh shit there actually was a PS1 port for Quake 2 i thought only the N64 got it, since it had more horse power it's pretty impressive.

But all in all id rather play Quake 2 on an ''Old'' PC then a console port in the end.

  • PC WINS!

  • N64 version looks like ass. Framerate, textures, etc. And it shouldn't have framerate issues, what with the 64 being mostly superior hardware to the PS1. The texture issues are understandable though, considering the lack of texture memory and low ROM space.

Loading is annoying on the PS1, solely due to its frequency.

Also, remember that music can make or break a port -- remember Doom 32X? It looked reasonable for what it was, but sounded like ass.

  • @null1023

The N64 version actually runs quite smoothly; I think the framerate drops in the video were likely caused by it being recorded on an emulator.

It's not a bad port, but it's by no means faithful to the PC original. The levels no longer have the brown, gritty, industrial feel to them, instead having blue lighting everywhere and different map designs to make them feel more futuristic sci-fi.

The worst part is Jorg + Makron are totally missing. The final boss is just a Hornet.

  • PC

  • N64 always wins when it comes to shooters.

  • Here's an idea. Get it on PC.

  • I had both and N64 seemed to have smoother graphics but Playstion had better music, levels, and cutscenes.

  • I enjoy the N64 version much more than the PSX, the gameplay is smooth and fast paced and the graphics are nice too. On the PSX however you still have quite nice graphics but for me the *LOADING* literally every 2 or 3 doors totally cripples this game for me along with the for some reason unresponsive thumbstick whilst trying to aim. Other PSX shooters don't have this problem and Quake 2 shouldn't have had it either. NIce video BTW.

  • ps1

  • awesome game ps1 version is good

  • N64 is good but PlayStation is a Hightech console with a amazing soundcard, best controllers and with CD's. Sry Nintendo is Something for kids and PlayStation for guys they want more music and better technic. Compare Zelda v.s. Gran Tourismo PlayStation is the best Console. Japanese Sony Power !!!!

  • @Hardcorespacken85 ..........what!?! you cant compare zelda to gran tourismo !! you can compare wipeout 64 to wipeout ps1,you can compare quake 2 ps1 vs n64,you can even compare goldeneye 64 to tomorrow never dies ps1,but comparing an adventure rpg to a racing sim doesnt make any sense.nintendo is japanese too,by the way.

  • @Hardcorespacken85 Sorry, but then N64 had better technology. No loading screens, A lot more polygons, 93MHZ 64 bit processor vs 32 Bit 33mhz processor. The 64 had a 64mhz graphics processor, compared to the PS1s integrated into chip one. Gameplay> Sound

  • @jasonpwns Okay but what about PS3 v.s. N64 ? xD No just kidding. Okay Ps1 has not so good graphics but music. ^^ And for me is music very important

  • @Hardcorespacken85 Music is important, but so is gameplay. I do agree that the playstation had some good music, but the N64 also had some nice music at times. Overall your probably going to have preference to which console you grew up with.

  • @Hardcorespacken85 for quake graphics on PSX wins but for console graphics N64 wins cuz of 64bit processor

  • and let me see if i get it right...the N64 version have no muisc? Really? LOL

  • The Nintendo 64 version has smoother graphics. However, the pixelated PlayStation version gives me a certain feeling. So I prefer the PlayStation version.

  • @RemyLanslots ammm and when your talking about wii vs ps3... what is your answer about the graphics?

  • @RemyLanslots The Playstation didn't have Mipmapping, lack of which is the cause for the pixelated textures.

  • ps1 just seems a bit more rough around the edges.

  • Crappy animation.

  • ps1 rules for ever

  • @mepejorpo

    Ocarina. 'tis all.

  • PSX - fmv

    N64 - crappy cutscenes

  • Although im a N64 fan, the PS1 beats it in this game. The animations are 10x better.

  • @Edordorito

Don't you mean 10 times more pixelated?

  • how can u compare the both ps1 has 32 bit and n64 has 64 bit

  • @1996yayo Thanks for showing your massive amount of Technical Knowledge the Xbox beat both of those systems and technically thats a 32bit machine :D

  • how comes in all "id" game the shotgun is the best? i'm not complainin mind but still...

  • @MrDavidX96 The shotgun is actually far from the best gun in Q2 -- one of the worse ones, in fact. Still, past Doom II, it really isn't that good; in Q3, it's a situational weapon at best, in Doom 3 it's all but worthless and in Q1 it's actually the worst gun in the game, with the double shotgun as second worst. In Doom 1 and 2, it's your best friend because shells are plentiful and it kills the bulk of the game's baddies (zombies and imps) in one blast.

  • @Lioyd1rving i need to ether play more id games or do research before making trivial comments like that.. other than power weapons, the shotgun was good

  • @Lioyd1rving i need to ether play more id games or do research before making trivial comments like that.. other than power weapons, the shotgun was good

  • @MrDavidX96 I'm sure the sheer versatility of the Doom shotgun makes up for all of it. :p

  • Had this on PS1. Much better on PS1, N64 port looked like Quake 1 graphics.

  • I think the PS1 is better ^^

  • Why I always hated the N64. The N64 version has a crap framerate, crappy sound, crappy animation, no music, fewer weapons, fewer levels. Some superior console the N64 was. What an overrated piece of junk. Now you know why Nintendo got there asses kicked by Sony.

  • @JoeyJoeJoe5000 look turok2,perfect dark, conker bad fur day,007 goldeneye etc this games destroy all psx graphics.

  • @JoeyJoeJoe5000 You're an idiot.

  • @Lioyd1rving And the controller was a piece of shit too. I used to defend Nintendo blindly, but now I just hate there guts.

  • @JoeyJoeJoe5000 Just as blindly.

  • @Lioyd1rving Not really. Nintendo hasn't had a new idea for 15 years. And now they are just a gimmick company.

  • @JoeyJoeJoe5000 A gimmick company that now holds the entire industry by the balls after tapping the biggest audience in years.

  • @Lioyd1rving Doesn't mean it's good. Most of the people who own a wii play it are casual gamers, who are just looking for shorts bursts of gameplay. Like an arcade machine.

  • @JoeyJoeJoe5000 Sure, the Wii is aiming at more casual gamers but that doesn't mean that the games are bad. Video games aren't made for just shooting the hell out of people, want to do that? Join the army. Games like Mario are childish but they are still extremely fun to play. COD does has more violence but shooting and running gets repetitive. Video games are all about fun, not shooting.

  • @SNESFanboy64

I'd take games like loderunner 64 over the majority of ps1 games any day. I aim for uniqueness, not style bandwagons.

  • PS1 version looks much better(textures, animations),cause N64 version is a bad port.In comparsion with Turok 2 or Perfect Dark, both looks away better then any PS1 game

  • @Stefan91x kind of.

  • @Stefan91x the n64 version isnt a port. its a complete different game with new missions and levels other music etc.

  • @Stefan91x Nintendo 64 version is much smoother, making it the better game.

  • How can you play a game like Quake II with a PSX's pad???? It's impossible! O_o?

  • @Vesenumber22

You used shoulder buttons to aim. It worked fine.

  • @gunninlinguist But the DualShock pad is needed no?

  • @Vesenumber22

You use the Dualshock 1 with no analogue. R1 aim up, R2 aim down, L1 strafe left, L2 strafe right I think it went not sure if you could use the DualShock 2 sticks aswell...

  • @gunninlinguist I'm playing with the Dualshock 1 and it isn't very confy :\

  • @RIMBR

By graphics, you mean textures. The texture smoothing on the N64 actually accounts for greater detail. The edges of the textures are really sharp in the PS1 to the point of becoming pixelated. In the N64, everything in the environment blends, so it feels like you're walking through a 3D environment. On the PS-One, it feels like you're walking through a bunch of rough and jagged cooridors. I'm not a fanboy of either console; I bought and love both equally.

  • @RIMBR

Go and look at the graphics of N64 games like Donkey Kong 64, Perfect Dark, Turok 2, legend of Zelda, Super Mario 64, Jet Force Gemini, etc. etc. OR compare Games which were released for both systems like Rayman 2, Forsaken, Shadowman, and many more and THEN say again PSX had better graphics. i have to laugh my ass off dude...

    N64>>>>>>>>>>>>>PSX in terms of graphics

  • @felix8709 Bad ports don't mean much. The N64 had superior hardware in a few areas but had a few inferior things that do matter. Such as the low memory in its carts that made it so the N64 had fewer textures to use. You can see this in many of its games where the same simplified textures are repeated everywhere. Sound quality was murdered on the N64 (as were any CG movies). I had both the N64 and PS1 and except for a few N64 games the PS1 games were generally a higher quality experience.

  • n64 looks like shit

  • @RIMBR yeah but majority of ps1 games were square and blocks like lego 64 games looked and still looks better

  • The N64 version while it did not have the music and models of the original, the enemys stayed true to their pc counter parts as did the weapon designs. The sound effects on the N64 are also the correct pitch as opposed to the PSX version.

  • @DarkShadowRage2 The N64 version didn't even have all the weapons.

  • @teh2Dgamer Uh yes it did.

  • @teh2Dgamer The only thing the N64 lacked was hand grenades, it had every thing else.

  • @teh2Dgamer The PS1 version didn't even have all of the original levels or enemies.

  • @teh2Dgamer Good

Not many people do Quake on the N64

because their fucking horeshit even more than the ps1

  • @teh2Dgamer because its a complete different game. ;)

  • @DarkShadowRage2 the texture is blurred-not all weps are there-characters frame rate is lowered down-some textures are missing

+ the PSX version has a better frame rate

  • @DarkShadowRage2 whats wrong with the models?

  • Both versions are great, but the PSX version is the first FPS I ever played, and in my opinion, it's biggest advantage over the N64 version is mouse support.

  • lol,N64 sucks!

  • Lol i had this for the N64 back when i was 4-6, the fucking giant robot cyborg that shot rockets and stomped around scared the shit out of me D:

  • the handanimation of the n64-version is only a 2d sprite!

  • @liljames2k It is'nt. It is a 3d model, but the animation frames on all models were limited to fit the N64 cartridge. That's why things are so choppy in N64 version.

  • @TheGustlik102

now i understand! but why games like turok 2 have better animations for the n64?

  • even tho i don't play the N64 even tho i have one in my attic somewhere and i still have ps1 games i say tho both good the graphics looks the same the only thing is the n64 version it lags bad the n64 has more detailed blood to it then the ps1 the ps1 has better sound card in it then the n64 but to me they are both good

  • @RIMBR yeah and is you play the psx games on a ps2, you can get smooth graphics.

  • @RIMBR yeah. the lightning is gone and the music too. They had to take things off to fit a 64 Mbs cartridge (who thought at Nintendo that 64 mbs could compete against 600 Mbs ?

  • @pabloelpopstar CDs in PS1 era ranged from 650 - 700 MBs.The game itself (on PS1) is big around 150 MB.

  • Playstation Wins because it has DEATH METAL! N64 has no music!

  • @RIMBR You can blame that on the texture filltering, it blurs. It may be smoother but it won't be as sharp and, thus, will appear less detailed. That's one reason why DS games tend to be more detailed than N64, despite having similar graphics.

  • I have both N64 and PS1 versions - I prefer the PS1 version because using the dual shock controller is ALOT more comfortable - it allows for smoother gameplay and better control. The n64 had nicer graphics, but my thumbs are aching after 30 mins of using the n64 controller - its clunky and difficult to aim well.

  • @TheRaikia then answer me why the ps1 looks blocky and pixelated. and you can scratch cd's easily, you can throw the cartridge at the floor and it will still play.

  • n64 was better for this game, the textures for n64 were smoothed making them look less pixelated, the PS1 on the other hand was unable to soften the textures making it look like shit, like that wall right there.

  • The truth is n64 had waay better games if sony didnt have that head start n64 wouldve crushed it.sure ps1 had better details in this game but what was the funner system?n64 with its 4 ports 64 bits analog enough buttons to play strategies and exclusives just beat ps1.

  • @sebkav88 Yeah, your opinion is dumb, and you probably never owned a PS1. After exploring each library of games, my personal opinion is that the N64 isn't even in the same league as the PS1. It may beat it in a few genres here and there, but overall, the PS1 library of games just flat out rapes the shit out of the N64.

  • @teh2Dgamer Excuse me?You don't know who I am and I don't know who you are.We don't need the vulgur language here,Opinions can't be dumb It an opinion is a belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty.I owned the ps1 my favorite game is final fantasy 7 or castlevania(sorry for my misspelled word)And frogger(my favorite 2 player game.)."the PS1 library of games just flat out rapes the shit out of the N64."That is a opinion there I will continue to comment.

  • @teh2Dgamer That's and opinion there.I hope you know what rape means.Rape means the unlawful compelling of a person through physical force or duress to have sexual intercourse. You can't rape the "shit" out of a console due to the fact it has no genitals And it has no organs I hope you now know what opinions, rape, rape, and "shit" means. You shouldn't be rude to you're fans/comentor's Because You ruin you're rep. and fans will leave if you treat them like that."your" is spelled you're.good day sir.

  • @teh2Dgamer Three words: Third Party Support. When it came to average quality of the library, the PS1 was to the fifth generation what the Wii is to the seventh -- i.e. shitty shovelware everywhere in dis bitch.

  • @teh2Dgamer agreed...PSX/PS1 is the best system ever made and not to mention they had over 120 million units sold (or more)

while the N64 is like only 50 million

  • @teh2Dgamer I mean this is kind of my own opinion ( you don't need to agree with me on this) but I kind of like the N64's games better. The PS1 had more games of course but the N64 games were just more fun. I mean I don't think any FPS on the PS1 can ever beat Perfect Dark or Goldeneye and no game at all on the PS1 or any system can ever beat the one and only Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It's possibly the greatest game of all time. This is just my own opinion, you don't need to agree with me at all.

  • @teh2Dgamer Yeah the nintendo 64 was for fanboys and elitists who think theyre hot shit....the ps1 did have more fun games and shitload of RPG which is a win for me (i had both consoles as a kid and the n64 analog stick always hurt my little fingers when i played it back then)

  • @teh2Dgamer

That's true, but the sheer amount of pixels on the average ps1 game left me with seizures. At least n64 had solid geometrical shapes that didn't blur into other shapes, or you could get close to walls without them looking like a hundred little squares.

  • @teh2Dgamer exactly, and the sales of both systems proved that

  • @sebkav88 remember... n64 had a 64 bit procesor while PS had a 32-bit one also the analog stick is original from nintendo

  • @sebkav88 so basically what you're saying is : N64 is better! It would crush PS1 ( if it wasnt a better console with better games ) xD

  • i was the 10000 viewer and i think Playstation Win

  • i was the 10000 and i think Playstation Win

  • @RIMBR lol what a fag look at th soo called best looking game for ps1 FFgayass 7

then look at ocarina of time lol its wayyyyy better troll gay faggot ass bitch lollololooolololol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    N64 FTW its the best!!!!!

  • I like n64 more because of the controller. Ps1 was awesome, Ps2 was solid, Ps3 is average. I know this isn't aboud the video but on Sony's next console I want to see a new fricken controller design not another dualschock.

  • Doesnt matter, PS1 is better.

  • @RIMBR I'm a huge Nintendo fanboy, but I agree with you.... wierd.......

  • PS1 runs faster than that crappy unoptimized N64 hardware. Seriously the N64 is a mess to develop a game for.

  • I have this for PS1. It looks better than the N64 and has a more steady framrate and the animations just look all around better. Lets not forget the PS1 music. :) Other than graphics though the ports are pretty similar. They have all the same levels, same weapons and graphic models, and each can support 4 player DM.

  • Besides 1 1/2 levels, the N64 version has completely different levels. They're not even in a hub structure on the N64.

  • Comment removed

  • PS1: great music, better graphics, good light effects, PC levels

N64: no music just ambient, smoothed graphics (which make it look kinda dull), not much light effects, levels where all new for this version

Im leaving behind sound quality cause its obvious (cart vs cd?)

you have to think that N64 quake 2 needed the expansion pack to look as good as is on this vid, so if you are going to compare both, it should have been a no expansion pack vid (i know its in the end, but, it were just seconds)

  • @turron83

Sound quality is also effected by N64 hardware. Cart space is enough to make great MIDI music but impossible to hold MP3s(which the N64 can't handle with playing the game simultaneously) or even uncompressed Wav.

  • @SgtThom Conker's Bad Fur Day used MP3 tracks, heck, it's even metioned on the start up screen of the game. Other than that, yes, the N64 was seriously hindered back then by the lack of space, sometimes I still wonder how could've been if the N64 had CDs instead of cartdriges. Although it was seriously more powerful than the PS1, it lacked a lot in data space, with only a handful few bypassing that barrier, see Resident Evil 2 and Conker's Bad Fur Day. But again, those were exceptions.

  • @RIMBR you can distinguish the details through pixels? You're a man then!

  • i heve this games for both sistems and i think ps1 is better

  • the n64 version does look better in terms of resolution and such, but it looks completely boring and bland...I have to give this one to the ps1

  • Vanconker...N64 version of Quake is better? Yea...if it's a Mario game LOL.

  • @RIMBR Thank you! A real answer!

  • seems a miracle, but it's true, the version of Quake 2 for psx is better in graphics than the N64 version, the version of the n64 could be better, since the console has amazing graphics as an example turok2 ...

but in this case is the fact that the PS1 version is better in graphics, lighting effects etc.

  • i like both the ps1 and the n64 the same but rimbr is riht the ps1 version seems to have better graphics

  • If you guys wonder why the ps version has btter sound is because of the size. honestly cartridges were so expensive back then. I know nintendo had a fight with sony and thats how sony playstation became but still dosent mean nintendo coudnt make games in cds. then again they always thought about piracy. a good soundchip on the n64 for nothing.

  • Yea...Ima go with n64 on this one

  • I liked the PS1 version only because it had cooler colors and the poor planar-management or whatever that the PS1 had made it seem more grittier. PC version was ORANGE. ORANGE EVERYWHERE.

  • I enjoyed Quake 2 for the 64, but it was castrated. No ducking, no backtracking, no item carrying, none of the PC music, and non-interpolated animation (meaning the animations are very choppy). The Playstation version actually looks quite a bit more competent.

  • It's not about grapics and shit, ITS ABOUT GAMEPLAY AND FUN

  • @RIMBR,turok dinosaur hunter, turok 2,perfect dark etc, on n64 is much better than this bad port and the psx version of quake 2.

in graphics n64 smash the psx, this game in n64 a bad port .

  • About storage, later cartridges where also bigger allowing for larger soundfiles and textures.

But more importantly, solid storage media is more durable and faster then optical media. The only downside is production cost.

Look at how many gigs USb stick can take these days!! If they where as cheap as optical media avery gameconsole would run of solid storage media again.

  • And by the way, CD's would not have improved graphics ability of N64 one bit, exept for cutscenes! It would only have made loading times longer and screw up the wide open games like Ocarina of Time. Even the sound Quality of N64 is just as good as CD. The only downside was less capacity to store it which les to either overcompressed audio files sometimes but mostly many sounds where midi programmed which when done right sounded from ok to very good in most games.

  • ps1 was first console that did not care about bits. nearly every nintendo game had "64" on it

  • n64 doesnt have music? lol

  • Yeah, the n64 version looks like a mess.

  • Ok, one thing n64 had better was the depth of field/AA. other than that, the PlayStation killed it, mostly in the music category. I have the OST in my Ipod, it is that good

  • What a game i need to pick this up again on the n64

  • n64 WAAAAAAAY SMOOTHER!
