I think everyone complaining about ANYTHING in this video needs to pull their heads out of their asses and learn to play the piano with 1/100th the skill that this woman possesses in her pinky finger. The end.
@joshkramermusic If you have your own business and ask another company to provide you with a service which eventually is not as good as you have expected, the provider will just tell you: "you don't have 1/100th the skill I have!"... Ungh, your reasoning is senseless
@TheKapselis I've been playing piano all my life and this woman is extremely talented. For someone to nitpick her performance demonstrates to me that they either have low self-esteem or extreme envy...or both. Get off your high horse.
So, I can't help but wonder if anyone else noticed this.
She IS arppegiating those opening chords, right? but they are not arppegiated in the recorded version. What's the reason for that? Is it just due to the size of the chord?
actually if you look carefully, he conductor is right with yuja. it's the orchestra that's not with the conductor. they're always a milisecond behind. conductor's spot on with yuja's tempo.
@MartinPadderborn i'm not asking you what you think rehearsals are for. if you watch the conductor's downbeats and listen to yuja's tempo, they line up. end of story.
@MartinPadderborn I don't get why people have to micro-analyze this stuff. Why can't you just enjoy it. People are imperfect. Orchestras, despite numerous rehearsal sessions contain many imperfect people who are going to make mistakes, big and small. I think if we all allowed a little more flexibility, we might find more enjoyment in things instead of criticizing them. I'm not asking to reward mediocrity, but our expectations of perfection are a little unreasonable.
this music is ethereal...the lack of ensemble playing here and there is certainly something to quibble about but the opportunity to see this marvelous pianist close up in action is completely worth it....
@mdehkram no look carefully. the conductor's dead on with yuja. the orchestra is the one that's not with yuja and the conductor. they're too focused on juicing out their own sounds...
Maybe they didn't have much rehearsal time or the soloist and conductor were not compatible. With such a famous piece, the conductor seems oblivious to the piano part. ? ? ?
Yes, I watched the trailer to the Abbado performance and yes, The tempo is much faster there, starting with the introduction. This is still a mystery to me. Did she start too slow, and tried to speed up, or tried to accomodate to a slower tempo against her inclination?
Termikanov's conducting is definitely out of synchronisation with the soloist and is too slow. I felt sorry for her trying to cover it up. It might help if he used a baton but in any case watch her play it with Abbado and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra on YouTube. I have a number of recordings of this great work but that one is pure magic.
Yes, I thought maybe she didn't give an encore because she was dissatisfied. She didn't give a solo recital either at Verbier, so you think she would want give an encore. The piano and orchestra are so obviously out of sync that it seems almost willful, as though on purpose.
I saw this concert live on Medici.tv and I was a bit disappointed because the association between orchestra and soloist was not perfect at times...In this sample video one can hear the orchestra a bit on the slow side...It is NOT Yuja going too fast!
Not the case with the fantastic recording (live) with Abbado and Mahler Chamber Orchestra
Yes, I saw it live too, and yes, the orchestra and piano are badly out of sync, starting at 1:15 to 1:25, and then for a few seconds around 1:40. What happened? The piano has more notes than the orchestra, so I am assuming it was the job of the conductor to follow the pianist. Also, Wang did not give an encore after the performance, despite being known for her encores.

I think the conductor secretly hates her. I can't imagine other reason of why this is so... out of sync (so to speak).

This concerto, along with Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini, will be released together as Yuja Wang's next album. Can't wait for my copy.
Just thought some of you would like to know, if you didn't already.

@imperfectskillz
This isn't possible, because the conductor would have ironed out any tempo variations during rehearsal. That's one of things that rehearsals are for.

So what you are saying is that the conductor allowed or didn't notice that the orchestra was off beat throughout the entire performance.
