Apart from the fact that I don't like preachy material that tries to force an alarmist set of morals down my throat (no matter WHAT branch those morals may come from), this is ridiculously outdated.
Come on, people, the age of blanket persecution by the government, at least in the First World, has come and gone. They can't get away with that shit any more, too many eyes watching.
You can be vigilant about monitoring your Government, sure - but don't be an alarmist. You look like a crazy person.
@LazyMan9000 I don't think the intent was to be alarmist, but to make people aware that this can happen. As to "too many eyes watching" - if you've read over some of the recent laws that were proposed/passed (internet censorship, detainment of citizens deemed to be a threat to national security), you'd know that the government isn't afraid to try. Eyes alone isn't a deterrent: what are people doing about it? Nothing, and so the government moves forward...
@LedgemDK - I like how you say 'what are people doing about it'? Just what makes you think that whatever it is people have planned is any better than what the Government is already doing? Humans are inherantly insane when grouped together in large numbers, no matter WHAT purpose they're united by. The only real difference between a rioting crowd and parliament in session is that the rioters have less paperwork.
@LazyMan9000 Who is saying that we need a new system? I'm not a fan of the government trying to lord over people, and many other Americans claim the same, yet here the government is making power grabs in clear sight and full media coverage (in spite of the "many eyes watching"). Who is opposing it?
The Russian population is shrinking at a rate of 1.7 percent a year. The German population is shrinking at a rate of 2.0 percent a year. Texas has the largest rate of population growth in America. What's wrong with that picture? You socialists are a lot smarter than us dumb rednecks living in Texas so maybe you can explain it to me what I'm missing here but that don't seem to track at Houston.
I use this in my Race, Ethnic and Diversity college classes, as well as my Contemporary American Sociology for the Oppression chapter. This is an excellent movie - to inspire acceptance of those different from us -- to stand up for them will improve the world --- if we do not, we will be left alone, with no one to fight for our life!
@aan3 It's classified as a young adult poem, but many teachers use it as an example to teach young students about tolerance and speaking out against what's wrong even if you're afraid for yourself.
It can't happen here? Too many eyes watching? How many eyes are watching Guantanomo? The man from another land is already swinging in the breeze.

I sense a feature length adaptation of this would be right up Tim Burton's alley.

They came first for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for me
and by that time no one was left to speak up.
