I specifically said that MARRIAGE is about natural law and common sense. I did not talk about the vote as you imply. Sure, the whole thing got elevated to the political level. But since the content of the law and the vote are still intrinsically moral and indeed tied to the order of creation and therefore to a supreme being, the Church had to take a stand. I know you'd feel more comfy if you could just silence the bishops, but I am afraid that's democracy and pluralism for you.
