  • nothin' can beat the studio version

  • I got hooked on the Doobiees when this came out, wasnt 2 impressed prior 2 this 1, but then after hearing it and "Takin it 2 the Streets" in early 76, then I got hooked, and bought all there albums on vynil. Michael McDonald really gave the Doobies a great sound when he entered the band. I just always loved his baratone deep voice!

  • who is playing that sax,,,, wow

  • The set is unbelievably awful, but the guys are kicking some serious ass on this one! And by guys I mean the chicks too of course!

  • he was great at stonybrook and remains the same.Maria u know what i mean.

  • Is that Bobby Henderson on sax??

  • God given voice for sure... Amazing

  • Way to fuck up one of your classics Michael. I love you to death, but this is terrible.

  • Love Michael! His incredible voice stands out even when he has been kind enough to lend it for backup to other artists (Christopher Cross, Steely Dan, et al.) And he writes some killer tunes, as well. However, diction has never been his strong suit, right? Nonetheless, his signature vocal is immediately identifiable and has inspired and/or grooved millions. Indisputably, a modern vocal legend!

  • Sure wish I knew where he went to church. I'd gladly join, and I ain't even religious.

  • i perfer the carly simons version wish i could find it

  • i perfer the carly simons version

  • I am honored to have come of age during this rich era. Kohl Ha'kvod!

  • Music with soul! Mike is a black man in a white man's body : )

  • @NikonFstopper no you ignorent racist! he is a white man in a white mans body! wake up call, you dont have to be black to have soul! please keep your racist comments to yourself!

  • @thewhitehermit The poster didn't come off as an ignorant racist, he was just making a statement...that obviously isn't ACTUALITY. The "soul" voice you refer to is mostly found in AFRICAN-AMERICAN voices...nothing wrong with that. It is what is it, no need to get hurt about it. For everyone one white soul singer there's plenty more black soul singers, it's just how it is. No racism at all.

  • @shazamcomics ok so let me ask you this.....if a black man plays heavy metal guitar really well,do we say he is a white man in a black mans body?

  • @thewhitehermit Why not? Aren't most heavy metal guitarists white males? It's not anything that serious at all. Some may take what I said as racist but I don't believe in double standards. If one can say that about Mike why can't one say that about a black heavy metal guitarist??

  • @thewhitehermit--Ever heard of Living Color? How 'bout Jimi Hendrix?? Jimi STARTED heavy metal with Zeppelin,Sabbath, and other bands during the late 60's. Hearing MMcD on the radio alone, one would swear he was one of 'da brothas'! Everything points that way-his vocals & his keyboard chord changes. Which brings questions-Did he grow up in the black church? Did he eat fried chicken, collard greens, watermelon, cathead biscuits, crackin' bread, etc.?? Well?? I'm just sayin'.... : )

  • @63weezer i am over it! your argument is just more stereotyping!

  • @thewhitehermit-- E X A C T L Y !! That's why I posted that garbage! MMcD is a gifted musician. That's all that matters. He's been that for decades.

  • Stephanie Eulinberg is kid rocks drummer. Mcdonald's drummer is Yvette Preyer.

  • I am so sorry. I do not and never cared for him. I cannot listen to him ever. I LOVE the Doobies....but I can't deal with his voice. I am sure he is a fantasic person.

  • @rvelliqu Many are 50/50 on Mike. Some hate him, some love him. I see what you're saying. This song doesn't help anyone like him either, this is from someone whose a die hard Michael fan XP It keeps you running was never one his songs I liked. What a Fool Believes and others are much better than this one.

  • Dude, I said that it was not kid rocks drummer

  • Dang you are so dang cute Michael McDOnald! <3 ya!

  • yes she is...kid rock and michael mcdonald know talent when they hear it.. you go sister girl

  • @dlucy54 no it is not kid rocks drummer

  • @trk327 whats with you kid rock idiots... his drummer would'nt hold enough talent to drum for a man of this degree... he's a real showman and not a joke like kid rock!!! kid rock is just a no talent for those that have no soul and are taste such as yourselves...DON"T SLANDER!!! MR. MCDONALD LIKE THAT

  • Baby Girl is the Bomb!!!! My kinda drummer. Solid as a rock! She plays with a 100% of her heart and soul, on every track!

  • @rsmyth1953 Is that the same drummer Kid Rock has??

  • Michael has the ability to plumb the depths of all kinds of human experience - pain, longing, fear of intimacy, and throughout his work, hope.

  • the silver fox

  • Hey, if I buy the TV, can I keep the Michael McDonald DVD?

  • Audience is boring, but I guarantee if Michael played for a crowded bar would be be nothing but lively folks!

  • I don't like the way he bends the melodies.

  • Dudes got soul. Nothing to debate.

  • if the original doobies were there and singing the chorus instead of the female this song would have been the SHiiiiiiii....

  • The drummer can throw down. Crisp, tight and thick. Love it!

  • @porkpieaml The drummer is Yvette "Baby Girl" Preyer, she's an amazing drummer. Oh.... and Micheal's a hugely talented singer and songwriter.

  • When I was young and this music was at the top of the charts I took quality music for granted. Now looking back, I am so fortunate to have grown up with this music.

  • Dude can SING!!

  • This whole group of people really cook!! What a great cut. Michael belts this song out better than ever. Gotta love the man.

Thanks for posting the video, great vid.

  • I never thought I'd say this but this is missing that stupid fair-ground synth refrain so much!!

  • Is that Dave Hungate on Bass?

  • Great music like this sticks like glue, Killa sax!

  • Love his piano solo! Which genre could the solo be categorized, blue-eyed soul?

  • @mauno911

No such thing as "blue-eyed soul," bruh: just soul music. Just cuz Mr. McDonald is white doesn't mean he should be categorized as "blue-eyed" anything. He has just as much pain and soul in his voice as Marvin, Donny, and should be seen with such greats. Long live you, Mr. McDonald.

  • one of the great songs by a great great artist

  • isnt it amazing to see a man doing exactly what he was destined to do??...songwriter, singer, keyboard player....a beautiful thing isnt it???..what a blessing to all of us....

  • Love the Drummer! she kicks it !

  • @fastgun21 Yes, of course. We ladies have what it takes, no matter what "IT" is.

  • @BgMsDangerus Yea go girl, with your Baaad self.

  • @fastgun21 got it going on

  • Jajaja!! McDonald. I love you !!! From Chile. I know you !

  • Where is carly simom, here?

  • What? No one wanted to go out and find the original keyboard? What was it anyway? ARP?

  • @ORUPRANKSTAZ He used to use a Fender Rhodes w/ the Doobies up until they broke up. The next year Yamaha came out w/ the DX7, which was the first fully digital synthesizer. Now mostly everyone just uses synthesizers becuase they dont go out of tune or adjustment as a piano would or a Rhodes. I would love to see Mike still use the Rhodes though!! Some of the old stuff like this, Minute By Minute, and I Keep Forgettin would really benefit from it! Those pianos just have soul!

  • @coachcdobbs

Yeah but the intro for the original studio track contains a synth.. and since that track was produced in 1975 (and released in 1976 on Takin' It to the Streets), it's not a DX7, which, by the way, was NOT the first fully digital synthesizer. It was merely the first commercially SUCCESSFUL digital synthesizer. See below:

1950 CSIR MK I (first known use of computer used for purpose of playing music).

1957 Bell Labs MUSIC (though a program)

    And... the 1972 Triadex Muse.

  • @ORUPRANKSTAZ I know it wasnt a DX7. They werent around yet. Fortunately that awful Rhodes emulation hadnt come out yet... Mike didnt start using the DX series synths until his first solo tour (about the time they came out)

I too have always wondered what kind of synth was used on the studio version of this as well. I just know that live he used the Rhodes on it. On the studio track there is a nasty Clavinet part too if you listen closely. "Losin End" off that album has the same kind of vibe.

  • @coachcdobbs

    Oh God... a Rhodes "purist."

Dude. Nothing will ever replace a real one, okay? We get it. Geez. lol

And if you don't like the DX7, why don't you go create a massive commercial success and milestone? If it makes other musicians happy, and the listeners happy... what does it matter? It's not ALL about us (the musicians) you know.

Also, thanks for echoing my obvious point that the DX7 wasn't around at the time.

  • Oh hell yes, this is another example of the best American music ever.....my respect

  • Just got home and had this song in my head . . . great song!

  • He sounds as good as when he was with the Doobies...4real!!!

  • This is a really good live version of this song. And I think there is room for both.

I like the studio version because it's moody and it's mixed so things sound like they're way off in the background.

The live has got great drumming and keeps all the original harmonies, and fills them out a bit with the extra instruments.

  • Oh hell yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • Great voice! Love you!

  • I LOOOOVE B3's Lesley, so nice, they can go from cold as ice to hot as fire and keeps any song warm and blended.

  • Good grief, what a voice....He's still got a great voice...

  • Yvette Preyer can lay down a groove like no one's business!!!

  • Great performance, but I like the original recording better.

  • So nice to hear an old favorite. As good as new. They have not lost a thing and it reminds me of the good old days. Great performance of one of the best pop songs ever recorded.

  • is that kid rocks drummer stephanie

  • @guitarmank No,it's Yvette 'babygirl' Preyer..Wicked drummer !

  • Tooooooooooo much with the horn. just tryin' to hard.

  • Love it, one of my favorites and instrumentals are fantastic!

  • In my opinion, the guy might have a great voice but no vibration in his voice. I think a great singer should use his real voice and not add extra unnecessary stuff to it. Using this technique, that little extra low humming, it hard to understand the word he's saying. It sound whenever he sing a bunch of extra air come a cover up the words, lyric's. And it set a ideal way of singing for other singer which is not straight foward singing but amateurish. But your tasted, just my opinion.

  • who is the singer in the middle

  • charlie larry lol

  • One of a kind, beautiful voice

  • This is just great. So groovy and funky. It swings like H----l. Check out the drummer lady - ohh man.

  • Back a number of years ago I saw the Farewell Tour in Portland. 15 Doobie vets were up in stage. They played this song. If you can imagine MOST of the Doobies of past on stage singing chorus and adding their own musical fingerprints, it was unforgettable. This is still a great version. Would you sing YOUR song the same way over and over and over for years and years? Nah. You'd change it up or welcome world-class instrumentalists to add some flavor.

  • holy crap .. MMD is the man

  • Who's playin that sax? So great!!

  • I like the original way better they funked it up a bit too much but it's different..

Amazing how different they sounded w/ McDonald yet they were equally as popular

just a different crowd - me, i like the original Doobies w/ Tom Johnston..to me he is the Doobies, he & Pat Simmons are the Doobie Brothers..

  • Where you gonna go, Where are you gonna hide? You go on leaving out your heart And all it's saying deep inside. I can feel your heart beat You got me all wrong. You don't have to worry You just been lonely too long I know what it means to hide your heart From a long time ago - It keeps you running It keeps you running etc.
  • OUR MAN....better in person than you can even imagine....RIGHT MIKE? XOXO janis

  • great jam he is great live

  • he is a true artist!

  • Timeless masterpiece

  • This guy can sing.

We both grew old and grew while I listened and admired his voice.

Along with Carly Simon, James Taylor and Carol King............

This is the soundtrack of my life :)

  • not bad at all but the doobie version is still the best this band behind him just didnt cut it

  • SING THAT SHIT

  • Freakin elevator music now...F this.

  • oh the good old times when great musicians played great live music..... now it's all rap garbage... god help us....

  • i seen him about 9 yrs ago he is really good live

  • i seen mm about 9 yrs ago he is really good live

  • love him!!!!!!!!!:)

  • Does anyone have the version he did with the doobies or know where I can download it?

  • Someone got for me off of Limewire...But I like this version.

  • @Campbejn I have been looking for it myself. This version is a little faster than the original version, but it's good. I'm a huge Michael Mcdonald fan. I like the original better though. How do I find it?

  • I like the version with the doobies much better!

  • They really gave up the power of the studio arrangement on this one. :(

  • I must say that the only part of this song I recognise from the studio version is the chorus. The verses are more mellow and smoother in the studio version.

  • Yes..Mr McD is really something..that voice is instantly recognizable..one of the best in the business...

  • Micheal McDonald is awesome. Not enough credit for being one the best in the world, and ever!

  • This totally sucks ass compared to the original studio version. In the name of all that doesn't suck take this down!!! Please!!!! Please put the studio version up in it's place.

  • Major good piano jam... a real smooth sound....

  • Michael McDonald is very sexy and he can really sing.

  • The band are a bunch of bad mothers...

  • magnumshifter, me too! Even though that song is only in the movie for about 5 seconds....

  • MdD's talent is dwarfed by his charitable life, sweet personality and for being an incredible husband to a cancer-stricken wife. The music is just one of his God-given blessings.

  • @modspell That's great that Michael is there for his wife. Especially when you have Pat Robertson saying that he thinks if your spouse has alzheimers disease that that should be grounds for divorce. Unbelievable statement by a self-proclaimed minister of the Gospel.

  • @mypalchester Are you serious. wow. fill me in bro.

  • I always think of Forrest Gump since the movie came out.

  • Michael McDonald, what a voice !

  • such "soul"......

  • one word to describe Michael: Consummate! A song just cannot be presented any better. Master craftsmen. The art form as a work of art, that is also entertaining. Live long Michael, and prosper.

  • Loved the album ' Takin It to the streets' (played it to death ) especially this track and the other being ' Rio ' . Unfortunatley the latter has not been posted on You Tube . Would any kind soul thinking of posting this song please do so and make me a happy man.

  • I cut my teelh on the Doobies, and this is a terrific rendition of a wonderful song.. The finest musicianship on a stage together..Thanks for posting!!!

  • I grew up with this music, The Doobie Bros. were a breakout band from the Bay area in the 70's when music was the real deal. I can tell by some of the posts below half you all weren't even alive back then....Welcome to the real music world when Rock and true R&B music kept the peace!

  • amen to that!

  • that singer in the middle is PURE SEXY!!

  • Vince Denham is one bad-assed tenor player. Those fills and his solos are just soulful as hell and he plays some incredible altissimo.

  • Damn, is that a sister on drums?Damn she kicks tail. I love to see women playing some good rock & roll.

  • Yes indeed, and that motha can rock.

  • i heard this song in pakistan i love it!

  • A great song by a great singer/song-writer/musician.

  • Real soul...It keeps me singing.

  • The first time I heard this was on Forrest Gump. Fantastic.

  • i love his music

  • Micheal McDonald Rocks my world.....and then some...

  • : /

  • Hell of a guitar player!

  • I remember an interview with Michael McDonald where he said he's rather bust a testicle than transpose a song down to a lower key.

God bless him he's an icon and a wonder of the modern age.

  • McDonald is a giant - this version is a killer with Yvete P. on drums

  • OMG-------------& WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for posting dootsmasta..I have never heard this "QUALITY sound on a "You-Tube" How did you capture and transfer it in this quality. Im sitting here rocking in my chair. Sounds like I am in the Theater.

  • As for singing "Black," it all has to do with singing the blues, and I've never heard black musicians claim the blues for themselves.

Obviously, "The Great !@#$%^&" doesn't know that Clapton began as a blues musician.

    Peace.

    Rock

  • LSMFT

  • doesnt sound like butchering to me

  • McDonald could sing the phone book and you'll still buy it. Cause it would sound that good.

"555-3695, Seaker House, we keep you runnin."

    lol

that shit would sell millions! :)

  • Comment removed

  • And you have sold how many albums? Go ahead and count,Ill Wait.

  • Losing his chops? Are you freaking kidding! MM rocks as much now as he did then!

  • MM -- the one and only. AWESOME, man.

  • Vince... damn! You kill that sax!

  • What the hell is singing black? Thats a very ignorant thing to say.

  • The 'blues' are universal; everybody gets the 'blues'. The American Indian sings the 'blues' with pride and dignity in their style, and very much so the black who have climbed up from humiliating circumstances, also. It is rare that a singer of any stripe would have the clarity and power that Michael McDonald has. His blues are are the blues of the common man, which includes myself I am proud to say.

  • superb- Michael is fantastic

  • Oh, stifle, Edith!

  • michael has a amazing voice. so much heart and soul. thanks

  • 30 plus years later...and he's still pretty sexy! What happened to music? Good music seems to be a distant memory....*sigh*

  • Is this show on DVD somewhere???

  • Check "more info" (above) for details. It's a Soundstage production and is available on DVD.

  • such a lovely voice special to everyone

  • The boy is so bad that even Black African American choirs seek Michael McDonald to do lead vocals with the choirs

  • Boy,you said a mouthful, how is that for knowing you are a legand

  • everything he said made sense

  • I love how they changed this song up and made it new again! <3 You Michael McDonald! Voice from Heaven!!!

  • hahaha! funny meeting you here!

i grew up listening to The Doobie Bros and then Michael solo too and this is a good song for what we are doing right now---I thinks anyway!

    See ya! ^j^

  • What a great guitar line!

  • BAH! I wasn't aware the deaf could be music critics

  • thank you.... MAJOR X2

  • You really don't kniw what jazz and funk are, do you?

  • You dont know good music,or how to mind you own buiz,do you?

  • Michael Mcdonald is the greatest, bottom line.

  • Polished but so shiny its funky!

  • Is that Jay Leno singing?

  • McDonald is awesome, as usual, but I don't care for this rendition

  • Yea , I hear ya..I think Michael is an incredible artist, but here, it's like he's playin with the saturday night live band or something. Just a bit too polished for my taste.

  • ya, gee, i just love my songs sloppy and sounding like shit.

  • hahah

  • This is an amazing song, but all the vocals in the chorus should not be so gentle. It so beautiful that it should be much more aggressively sung. But a tight band for sure! Thanks for the post!

  • killer voice. great video.
