  • lol 3:21 the drummer bloke in the background goes off sync with the tambourine noise ... then he stops making them while it's still going!

  • Great record but oddly never recorded in stereo.

  • Awesome that Carl played bass and sang at the same time.

  • @6arcsn1sky Actually, Carol Kaye played Fender Bass on the studio cut.

  • @ShikataGaNai100 True, but Carl somehow played the bass during the making.

  • acho que falta um pouco de LSD na juventude de hoje, talvez assim façam algo explêndido e realmente gostoso de se ouvir e viajar.

  • Beach Boys ownz! One of the best bands ever!

  • Comment removed

  • With a time machine i would do one thing, fight for the release of SMILE back in 67!!!!

YOU HAVE TO RELEASE THIS,BRIAN!!!!I AM YOUR ACID TRIP AND I WILL KILL MIKE LOVE FOR YOU!!!!DON´T LISTEN TO SGT PEPPERS!!!!DONT CARE FOR IT!!!

  • @mnlwrnr It's the electro-theremin.

  • Good Song!!!

  • Vanilla Sky

  • 1:04 HAHAHAHAHAHAHA the drums are playing but the drummer isn't

  • CLASIC

  • Sadly this film was made after Brian's mental breakdown. He's not in it.

  • its called electro-theremin

  • Awesome and old song :)

  • One of the greatest rock songs ever. He made the Beatles even better. Ask Paul if you don't believe me. ;)

Btw, that's not a slide or Hawaiian guitar, it's an electronic device that was novel to rock and Mike experimented with it.

  • love this song

  • Looks like Mike Love at the Hawaiian guitar has got a dose of the heebie jeebies at the start. Or he's got ants up his pants. Or he's lost control of his bowel movements. Or his coat needed a wash. Or he was so stoned he thought he was Pinocchio. Or just for the moment he was the Ghost of Christmas Past. Or his dealer had sold him some bad stuff. Or his beard was trying to go back into his face.

  • HAHAHAHA thats the funniest thing ive heard in a while

  • I know they knew the guy, but is that Charles Manson?!

  • The guy with the beard playing theremin? That's Mike Love.

  • lol no it's charles manson, its well known the beach boys were member of his cult

  • Quote: "no it's charles manson, its well known the beach boys were member of his cult."

You're either misinformed or you have a bad sense of humour, mate. Not only did Manson not look anything like Mike Love, he (Manson) was in jail when this video was filmed. And although Dennis Wilson (the drummer) had met him, the Beach Boys were not members of his cult.

  • lol I have a bad sense of humour

  • Quote: "lol I have a bad sense of humour."

    Okay *laugh*

  • Good Vibrations without a doubt is MY ALL time favorite song! Good Vibrations > Life

  • The Theremin is great!

  • Love the song, wasen't brian going carzy at this point in the beach boys span?

  • He had a nervous breakdown and unfortunately, the doctor who was suppose to be helping him made him considerably worse. Sadly, he never fully recovered and it took him years to reappear in public. He was actually the genius and creative talent behind all of the music we hear from the Beach Boys. He not only wrote the songs but coordinated all of their vocals and musical background sounds that became distinctive to their music.

  • No Brian Wilson? I never did understand his hiatus from performing during that time. He'd write, but not perform. What was the deal with that?

  • Quote: "No Brian Wilson? I never did understand his hiatus from performing during that time. He'd write, but not perform. What was the deal with that?"

He was having psychological problems, almost certainly due to drugs. Then some quack doctor got hold of him and damaged him even further with more drugs (pharmaceuticals that time). This went on for years, and Brian was altered permanently. So the story goes, anyway.

This video is horrid, with terrible lip-syncing and no Brian. Shame.

  • Ok...thanks, Ken. He doesn't hit me as the drug-using type, but what do I know.

  • Quote: "Ok...thanks, Ken. He doesn't hit me as the drug-using type, but what do I know."

That's what a lot of people thought, myself included. What I've heard over the years is that he briefly experimented with psychedelics in the late '60s. Maybe he got some 'bad acid' or whatever and it screwed him up. Who knows ....

The bigger story was the quack that did experimental drug treatments on him for years, which messed him up further. The family/band sued him, but I don't know the outcome.

  • Yeah, he wrote it. We all know that. What does that have to do with this thread? And why are you calling me an "a** hole"?

Are you stoned or just dumb as a brick?

  • I love them bothes!!!The Beach Boys and the Beatles. Brian Wilson, Paul, John and George were send from heaven to compose!! This song brings tears to my eyes!!

  • ilovethis fucking song!!!

    namaste!!!!

  • I love the little actions the guys perform at the start of the song that correspond to what the lead singer is saying.

  • I like the Beach Boys, but the Beatles are really better!

  • the beatles are much better

  • thats a stupid comment, im british and i appreciate both equaly, nationality has nothing to do with the music you enjoy ;)

  • Considering the fact that there is a lot of slander and belittlement going on in the world towards individual cultures and people, I'm fine with my comment as is. You can't watch a video, you can't talk to people, and you can't go anywhere without negativity. It gets a bit annoying.

  • nah i prefer the bearded one ;)

    L.O.L

  • the main one is gorgeous

  • i love this song

  • Greatest single ever... Thanks mates, for uploading it.

  • The Electro-Theremin, often called the Tannerin, is an electronic musical instrument developed by trombonist Paul Tanner and amateur inventor Bob Whitsell in the late 1950s to produce a sound to mimic that of the theremin. The instrument features a tone and portamento similar to that of the theremin (or thereminvox), but with a different control mechanism. It was basically a wire wrapped around the frequency control of an audio oscillator and a slider to hold.

  • anyone out there know what instrument that is that looks like a pedal steel or is it a pedal steel?

  • I think it's called a theremin.

  • It's an Electro-Theremin......same sound as a theremin, but still a different instrument.

  • everytime i hear this song i think of vanilla sky. TECH SUPPORT!!! lol.

  • i love this song i first heard it on wild hogs and immeaditly loved it but didn't know what it was called till now

  • Is Brian Wilson the one with the beard?

  • Brian Wilson is the one that plays bass and sings lead.

  • Nope, that's Carl - Brian had left the performing group by this stage. Of course they are miming, but Carl sang lead on the record.

  • My mistake. I was always under the impression that Brian sang lead - they sound so similar to the un-trained ear.

  • Similar to Paul McCartney , right ?

  • Similar to each other...

  • MIke Love has the beard

  • Brian is actually the keyboard player... and like gibb253 said, he wasn't performing in public anymore by this time. Notice, no organ player? (I don't know what that idiot is doing in the back, but he sure as HELL ain't playing that organ!)

  • @RollandB No, that's Mike Love.

  • I'm almost as old as they are. This song is so good, it's my main ringtone, 'nuff said!

  • i think the version is better than the new version

  • i think thats the first time i've seen carl play bass , now that's cool

  • experimentos plz!

    mas o video é optimus

  • One of the best songs ever.

  • Just learned that this song has a theremin in it. Never noticed it before.

  • spread the good vibes...

  • i love the deep tone on im thinkin bout good vibrations, classic

  • where's brian wilson in this?

  • in his bed getting fat, stoned and going crazy

  • @batman444 you are a ass

  • before they released this album brian and the band agreed that he would stay in the studio and focus on sonwriting, as he was not very productive while on tour. So he is missing..

  • listen like watch reeves and mortimer , falling down it's hilarious

  • It's an electro-theremin, aka tannerin.

  • He is using a weird version of the theremin.

Mostly Theremins are a touchless musical instrument but this one looks like it makes noises via a strip used for variable resistance.

  • progressive

  • Mike Love looks old here because he grew a retarted beard for some crazy relgion he joined,

  • groovy!....lol

  • yeah man good vibes

  • is that carl, who looks about 95

  • who da hell is that old guy with the beard, i really don't hope his 20 or 30 for his sake, he looks like his 60 even my granpa looks younger and he is 75;)

  • Mike Love. He's an idiot

  • He's Mike Love, He plays Theremin

  • hey guys...does anyone know if Brian's vox were 'double-tracked' in this original recording?...cheers!..(ps..feel free to inbox me if you want to give me your angle on this?..thanx!)

  • were was this filmed

  • MY FAVROITE

  • intresting facts about 1963:my dad was born then and Surtsey came out of the sea close to Iceland

  • ¿ This band were before The Beatles ? Before 1963 ?

  • this was 1967

  • marty50s - has it crossed your mind that these guys simply weren't too happy having to 'perform' in this way (and it shows)?

In the UK, the top tv music show was 'Top of the Pops'. It was never truly 'live'. Did anybody care? No. Would it have been more 'honest' to do perfect synching and 'pretend'? Incidentally, the idea that drugs make you 'honest' is a joke in itself. They just f*** you up. In Brian's case, they all but destroyed his fantastic artistic judgment and damaged him forever.

  • music business machine ha ha ha you need to get out more.

  • has anyone seen then part in vanilla sky with this song? it makes it sound much different

  • haha yea I just watched that movie in my psychology class at school I loved the movie and the song :D

  • These guys needed showmanship.

Mike Love looks like he's from skid row.

  • Who put Karl Marx on the electro-theremin?

  • The weird instrument is a theremin

  • its called a hawain guitar zootex

  • Oh, im sooo offended

  • Pleased DONT be offended. I have only told the Truth!

  • you must know that people are going to be offended, which is why you used that word. If your point is shock value- grow up. you can make a point without being uber offensive. If your point was to be an ass- congrats.

  • you can express your opinion, which I agree with, without using such an offensive word

  • What's the name of the instrument the man is using to make the radio frequencies sounds? After seeing the clip and him actually doing that I think it's so cool that this song is about getting good vibrations and in fact they are using an instrument to make radio frequencies/vibrations, really cool!

  • electro-theremin

  • this song is good, but i think the chorus takes away from how good the verse is

  • i disagree, i've always liked the contrast between chorus and verse.

  • i just uploaded a better version check it out

  • I've never thought much of the beach boys but this one prompted me to re-inspect my opinion on them.

  • please, dive into it, the most rewarding musical experience ever, take it from me, and im 17 years old

  • did you know they proffessionally recorded this in a huge, drained-out swimming pool for a sense of space and reverb??? i think its awesome that they did that. they changed the history of music.

  • The harmonies are just unreal, plus Brian's voice is extraordinary.

  • The harmonies are just unreal, plus Brian's voice is extraordinary

    ---

If you're thinking about lead vocal it's Carl. Brian's voice can be heard in the "Good, good, good" falsetto's.

  • His voice sounds like more than one person is singing at a time.

  • it was overdubbed (one voice recored on more than one channel)

  • don't ya get its a gimmick

  • its weird but i think the chorus ruins this song

  • i feel the same way richie1989a. that said. this is still one of my top 3 favorit songs by them.

  • I agree!

  • And is he playing a theremin?

  • Yeah, but it's a modified version.

  • He's playing a tannerin

  • Moeri25, what do you mean ok for the 60's Im in college and everyone looks like that here lol.

  • wow mike love was the stereotypical long haired bearded hippie before it became stereotypical

  • best one

  • it's scary ^^

their looks, but I guess it was ok in the 60's

    anyway, great song great sound

  • Karl Marx on the electro-theremin

  • ha ha ha ha

  • wow,

    they r amazing,i luv em

  • Is that Brian or Carl on vocals? They look a lot alike.

  • It's Carl, Brian isn't on this one.

  • Hay personas que vienen a al mundo y por mera coincidencia se conocen y juntas dejan huellas inborrables en la historia de la humanidad.

  • peaceful

  • i love the beginning!

  • lol

  • I only love the soft and chill parts, like the 25 first seconds, it's lovely!

  • woooooooooooow memoriesssssssss this song is a huuuge trigger

  • Mike Love looks like a pedophile in this video.

  • there arent words to explain how good their music is <3

  • This song actually hit the Top 40 on the British charts as late as the summer of 1976.

The Beach Boys are an institution.

  • IIRC, the electric instrument he's playing is a modified Theremin. It makes the kind of sound you hear in those old alien movies.

  • Is that Brian singing lead or Carl? Because I thought it was Brian who was the bassist and Carl one of the guitarists. Or is it brian on that weird machine that makes that odd noise?

  • Brian was the bassist, but around this time Brian stayed in the studio to record classic songs like this, Carl is on bass here and singing lead

  • Dennis Wilson went a-drowning. This is wrong.

  • I like the beatles vs beach boys discussion

  • Ha, I think they were both incredible and find it funny people decide who's better. I think we should all team up and bring down the Jonas "Cover good songs cause there's suck" brothers.

  • Agreed also Sunflower i can listen to that entire album but the rest r all pretty dismal compared to the beatles albums. Just look what they put out after pet smiley smile, wild honey, and friends compared to what they beatles put out after sgt pepper, magical mystery tour and the white album the beatles material is lightyears ahead

  • yeah right. Friends is among their best work, far ahead of what anyone else was doing at the time. Plus Wild Honey was wildly different from the beach boys normal sound.

  • im not saying that they are bad records im just saying that they were not as good as what the beatles where putting out

  • anyone comparing the beatles to the beach boys have to remember one thing, the beatles had no filler material, every song they ever made was good. The beach boys were capable of great songs but their albums dont stand nearly as good because they are full of filler

  • I agree. I love both bands. Honestly they are my top 2 (look at my music list on my profile) but The Beach Boys just couldn't accomplish what The Beatles did. I think that this was because The Beatles had two geniuses, one great songwriter, and one of the greatest producers of all time. The Beach Boys had 1 genius, 1 good songwriter, and 3 other guys with good voices. Also, The Beach Boys only put out a few great albums while The Beatles put out 9 or 10.

  • I agree with what you said as well, but i think that the beatles had 3 great songwriters and a great producer. i think that if the beach boys had a good manager they would have faired better then they did because dennis really wasnt allowed to write until the late 60's and by then it was too late for the band.

  • I met Mike Love last week in Laguna which isn't really much of an accomplishment haha

  • This video should have like 40 million views. What the hell. This is one of the greatest songs of all time.

  • whats the guys name on the piano... why does he slighty favor the kennedy family??

  • This song is better than ANYTHING the beatles ever did.

  • haha yeah right

  • Actually, I kinda agree. Never mind my previous comment. But I think that The Beatles are the better band. The Beach Boys only had 1 talented member: Brian Wilson. Mike Love is a greedy asshole and the others just had good voices. Both bands are great. But I believe that John Lennon will always be the best. Brian Wilson was dramatized when he heard Strawberry Fields Forever. "That was the sound I was looking for" - Wilson

  • I do believe that in this case the proof is not really in the pudding as they say. I mean The Beatles ended up more successful in every sense of the word especially commercially in America. However, one has to consider Brian's handicap when compared to The Beatles. He didn't have another producer like they did. He didn't have a writing partner aside from lyrics and he didn't have a George Harrison for filler songs (don't get me wrong I love Harrison songs but when compared to Lennon/McCartney

  • I agree with you. Harrison did write some good songs, but he wasn't a genius as people are saying nowadays.

  • When compared to Lennon/McCartney songs he is filler) But I digress . . . He really was the only true talent when it came to focusing on true musical expression in The Beach Boys but The Beatles had things at their disposal that Brian didn't that I might add were neither product of their prowess or his alleged inferiority to them. He simply was unlucky in the Beach Boys/Beatles race. Had he stayed in good health I think we would see it differently and we could look at just one instead of the two

  • In short it was all things out of Brian's control that made him seem inferior to The Beatles. Had they been on an equal playing ground I think Brian would at least be equal if not head a shoulders above. It's just that Brian was all alone and The Beatles had massive support in comparison. He was bound to go crazy and they were bound for greatness. But in 1966-1967 he was definately head and shoulders above them already. Brian 1972-1977 was the greatest would have been in music.

  • Dennis never bothered to mime properly -when Carl sings "When I look.." he doesn't even pretend to play the roll

  • You watch, when the drum beats start, the beats come out but he's not got his sticks on the drums!!!! great band though. pasca

  • Well, yes. They (Brian) used the Wrecking Crew to record the album when the Beach Boys (with Glenn Campbell substituting for Brian) were on tour in Japan. It took Brian about 6 months of studio work to get the sound perfect. 5 musicians can't sound like 30, and yes, this sounds exactly like the album. You will also notice...not one guitar plugged in. So give Dennis a break..its Hal Blaine on drums, Carol Kaye on bass, (not Al Jardine), etc. You are also correct, Dennis hated to fake it.

  • I think it was actually Bruce on the Japanese tour - the photos were later used on the Pet Sounds cover and you can see it's him

  • magnificent, pop music at it's very best!

  • wow Thats all i got to say . Why cant music be that way anymores ? it was pure

  • omg.....

  • brian wilson isn't dead

  • The instrument that the guy runs his fanger over was made by Robert Moog.

  • nice 1

  • OMG OMG OMG!!!! mii choir class ((its an advanced choir class)) sang this song it was SOOOOOOO extreamly hard to learn...but it turned out fantbulous!!! and we added awesome coreogrphy
