Some guy below me said that it's only Carol that represents Max. I think it's also Alexander and...the one that Katherine O'Hara plays because she's bossy and loud.
Especially Alexander because he's shy. And nobody seems to notice him.
There's also that giant one that doesn't talk...not sure if that represents Max's EXTREME shyness.
This scared me when I first saw it, but I like this scene at the same time because it's showing Max exactly how he acted toward his mom when she couldn't handle him, and it's his moment of realization. The exact words "I'll eat you up" and the same music in the background, too, like a twisted reprise or something.
Carol is supposed to symbolize max obviously. Everyone else is supposed to be the people that surround max in his real life, and Carol represents him. And by Max realizing how bad Carol is, He goes back home. One way I conclude they are similar, Bob and Terry, everyone understands them, except for Max and Carol. Everyone Says Carol is out of control. Max's mom says that Max is out of control. Max tells his Mom he will eat her up. Then Carol does this, to Max.
@phocjame No, the book is but Spike, the director, intended it to be for the adults who had read it when they were younger. It was a film ABOUT kids but not necessarily for kids.
@kaleyjoplinRAWRR Yeah, but you don't make a film based on a well known kid's book that you know full well people are going to take young children to see, into a terrifying...thing.
I loved this book and the movie. This was a kid book and became a kid movie- my 3 yr old nephew howled at the end when max leaves. The movie really does portray an idea that kids feel stress, act out and run away into their own world. How do we lose that when we grow up?
I will not let my little sister near this. Ever. Bear in mind my little sister couldn't sleep when I told her the plot of Sweeney Todd, and won't watch Edward Scissorhands. If she watched this she would be traumatised for MONTHS. MONTHS.
@TulseLuper That is true. That would probably be my only thing about children seeing this movie, however some children don't realize that for a long time and can end up getting scared, but I totally get your point, however, I wouldn't take a five year old to this
I had to see this for myself. My little 6 year old girl just came into the room crying her head off. It wasn't as bad as she made it sound, but it still really upset her.
@dogalways A lot of people ask this question. It's symbolic and shows a lot of dysfunctional relationships. Plus the arm ripping off part is something you don't want to really show kids. It's all about childhood fear and love and anger and sadness and joy and so on...Not a kids movie AT ALL. It's something for adults and teens who have a large sense of depth to see.
@TheAquaEntertainment But kids relate best to those kind of extreme emotions. They're a lot tougher than we sometimes realize. They may be upset in the short-term but they remember films like this as classics when they grow up, a la The Brave Little Toaster.
@TulseLuper Yeah I have to agree with you on that, I'm not saying that they CAN'T see it, I'm just saying it was meant to be a movie about childhood for adults who remember the book- however a great majority of children were bored of this movie mainly because they didn't understand it- but then again older children, teenagers, and adults may be able too. But I don't know. Younger kids may be able to relate to it as well.
I'm afraid that the simple fact of the matter is that children have their own manner of regarding the world and certain things actually frighten and confuse them less.
Its possible that a movie might be too Dark, too complex, too scary, etc. for Parents. But not their kids.
This is by far the darkest scene in the whole movie, very scary if you're a child.
Still, I don't believe Carol attacked Max just for him lying about being a king, but also because he felt the friendship and dreams he shared with Max have been betrayed and... jeez, who of you wouldn't get mad if someone you trusted more than anything lies to you, even if unwillingly?
