@riverlifeva it's on state rte 622 also called rocky road, take state route 11 north out of Buchanan, Va, it's about 5 miles north, follow the road down to the quarry, stay on the road a bit more and you will see the bridge pictured here.
johnboyd7- I'd imagine that the price of scrap iron doesn't justify the cost to pull it all up if their not selling off the right-of-way. I haven't been there in awhile but we had a track south of town with 8-9 inch diameter trees growing up through them. Looked pretty weird with a track running through a forest, like a scene out of Fahrenheit 451.
I haven't walked to the exact start of them (too much brush at the time) but I can tell they joined the main line that is still active. The other end goes to a still active strip mine. I walked the tracks halfway there and crossed back to the road when I saw the No trespassing sign.
I don't mess with my account much these days. I do my posting on Flickr. Much easier than making a video and then finding music that I'm allowed to post with it. Thanks for watching.
i imagine this is what the old new york central line through henrys bend pa would have looked like 50 years ago, its gone now but i have tie plates about 100 spikes and a few rare car hitches. my cousin has the wheel of a push car also
I love how the government in the early 20th century was just like "psh.. do what you want," and didn't ever make any of these companies (often corrupt and/or poorly managed) take any of it out. Then again, it's pretty cool to see all that history now!
Great idea for a video! We have plenty of abandonned lines in our area(Kingston Ontario). All rail has been removed though. Most have been turned into trails.
Looks like a switch. Think someone else said so too. Just strange that there doesn't look like there ever was another line. No tracks that lead off from these. there is one very short piece that stuck off from one rail. But from the lay of the land and the fact that a creek parallels that line (no bridge) then there is a road then a steep hill I think that either A: there was a short section for one car (but no rails?) or B: the spur was never built. (more likely)
Could be a split switch derailer. They only had a short diverting rail enough to derail any errant cars and dump them off the rails. Just as effective as the derail that clamps on top the rail head. I used to live near a branch that had two split rails - one before a long warehouse siding, and one at the connection with the mainline. Both places had track grading down towards the derails.
Well that one of the few places that it wouldn't be any reason to. There is already a road that is just on the other side of the creek from it. literally a stones throw away. There is a very short part just after it crossed the road where it goes to the main line that it's not right beside the road. Now the other video I have half of that old line is now a hiking trail. Even has a tunnel that I hope to get pictures of real soon. so check back. The part on that video is not in use for anything
I think the strip mine sill owns the property or someone does. I followed the tracks starting at the bridge until I got to where I could cross the creek back to the main road. After doing so I saw "No Trespassing" signs. As far as a tourist railway that would never be worth is as they are only a mile long at the most. They cross the main road at the bridge go a very short way to the main still active line. They end at the still active mine at the other end. thanks for viewing.
The device at :51 may be a derail with a " ground throw " switch stand.

I wish they would fix this up and put a steam locomotive on it for a scenic railroad.

@97trainman Way to short. It serviced a strip mine that is still in operation. The line is less than a mile long. Not long enough worth the effort.
whatihave2do 1 year ago
@whatihave2do Well that depends beacause the PRR museums line is only 1 mile long!

It looks like that the lines could become part of a extroversion line ( with the mines permission) .

@whatihave2do more than likely it was a derail to stop run away cars from making it to the main.
