  • Taught this to my patrol back when I was a Scout, made the long hikes much more enjoyable.

  • this is the best song, what i hear :)

    (in the hobbit theme) :)

  • I suddenly got an urge to travel across the country listening to this...

  • This was my grandfather's favorites. My Uncle sang this song at his funeral. Today is his anniversary of his death.

  • Oh my god, this must be in the movie

  • It's not the trolls. It's obviously the Wood-Elves.

  • that put a smile on my face :)

    thanks!

  • I love this tune, it feels very much like a walking song-- I've heard other versions that one could never sing while walking!

  • Not the one I thought it was, but still still cool.

  • I love this song! Hobbits for the win!

  • Where were these pictures taken?

  • which one is this song from probably a noob question

  • @shaune1000 It was sung by Bilbo near the end of The Hobbit when he reaches the Shire.

  • hooray for tiny irish people!

  • @freezie411

    Who are you referring to?

  • @ignorantpom Hobbits. Who do you think I was?

  • @freezie411

Then I'm confused. Hobbits are English.

    (Based on English anyway)

  • @freezie411 yeah buddy!!!!!!!

  • By the way does anyone know who's singing? And is he playing Bilbo here, or is he just singing?

  • GOOD SONG!

  • I listened to this as I was coming home from a long busy day, and It made me smile.

  • i want this song in the new hobbit movie!

  • @therapedone77 I'm afraid I don't think they'll do it - at least not with this melody. :( They used a different melody, remember?

  • @therapedone77 This song is in the book.

  • This song should become an irish song! It really does sound irish!

  • song of happiness....

  • this is fantastic, i have heard a few versions of this song/poem, but no one of them felt like a song you sing while you walk, but here it feëls like it should, i am speechless, simple amasing.

  • This was beautiful. It sounds so cheerfull. Thank you for making this!

  • Isn't this Brocelïande ?

  • The version in the Rankin/Bass movie was pretty, but it didn't really sound like a "walking" song. This rendition is much more appropriate, I think. :)

  • I really like your adaption of this song!!

  • I cannot express how much the Lord of the Rings has inspired, given hope in the darkest of times, comforted, and made us imagine more. The Lord of the Rings takes us away from our media, and yes im 14 year old american and i hate the media. I love The Lord of the Rings, I grew up on it. Forever live The Lord of the Rings.

  • I sing this song every day when im walking my dog

  • Tolkien would be proud listening to this !!! Its REALLY AMAZING IT MAKES me wanna go and walk among the trees and the fields near the rivers and under the clouds of the summer sky . Stand in a hill under the shade of a tree and drink something cold ... more like ice tea :P

  • Sung like a true hobbit!

  • Ah, now this is music, and beautiful music it is. The Lord of the Rings has always been an old favorite of mine. I'm gonna learn this song myself and sing it sometime.

  • "It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to."

  • I have a serious case of wanderlust!

  • i want this song played at my funeral

  • I wish I knew the chords to play this song...

too bad I don't know them...

  • @rockingmeerkat: I tried to find the chords by listening to the song... i submitted the tab at ultimate-guitar...just search there for "The Road Goes Ever On"...don't know if the chords are 100% accurate but hope you have fun..=)

  • @JCDHobbes Thanks! That really helped! =D

Now I can play this song... Yay!

I only have some trouble with that special G, because I'm not such a good guitar player.

I transpose the song like 5 half steps down, and capo on the 5th fret.

So the G, in my case an E, doesn't really fit the song.

Thanks anyway for uploading the chords on Ultimate Guitar.

  • @rockingmeerkat: you just have to play the E this way: x20200 ...if you don't understand this, then be free to send me a message ;)

p.s.: the song sounds better if you pick the chords...

(i'm sorry if my english is not that accurate)

  • @JCDHobbes Thanks, I do understand it...

    But still thanks anyway!

  • absolutly beautiful

  • Just precious... (And I really mean precious! ;-) The song and images are so refreshing and uplifting. Thank you!

  • Can I use the music break on this song for a video?

  • I feel like such a nerd but this just made my playlist!

  • why did bilbo sing 'the road goes ever on and on, right from the door where it began. and far ahead the road goes on. and I must follow it if i can. pursuing it with eager feet until it joins some larger way where many paths and errands meet and whither then i cannot say"? is this a different version or a different song?

  • @TBgamer4life This song is based on the end of "The Hobbit", what you're talking about is from the beginning of "The Fellowship of the Ring", two different books.

  • @TBgamer4life I think that song is from the fellowship of the ring... maybe.

  • Does anyone know where I can find the sheet music for this song? Must have!!

  • cuio i Pheriain anann!

  • The three trolls disliked this song

  • @georgieboy7 but they were promptly turned to stone

  • @georgieboy7 oh my god great hobbit reference!! perfect setup! pure gold joke!!

  • @georgieboy7 now three trolls, sauron, gollum and smaug

  • @georgieboy7 and "sack"ville baggins

  • Thank you! We love this :D

  • i almost began to cry. i love it

  • "Gandalf my old friend, this will be a night to remember"

  • I sing this song when i'm making a far walk :D

  • OMG I accidentally downloaded this years ago when I'd gather many songs and burn them on CD's for my discman. I was listening to the beginning and was going to delete it but it sounded so nice I put it on a CD full of The Hobbit music.

  • wonderful.

  • the glenn yarbrough version from the 1977 animated The Hobbit is better.

  • It is so beautiful - makes me long to return to another time, or at least pause everything for a moment and play this over and over again.

  • When I have sorrows i listen to this beautiful piece of music and for a moment they all are gone...

  • I really enjoy both the song and the pictures, well done!

  • Damn, it's a merry tune.

  • Yesterday my friends and I were taking a hike and I got them all singing this song!

  • 3 people never stepped out the door

  • @ryu8888 funny but its true unfortunately. i personally try to spend as much time exploring the woods and singing songs like this! its one way i live my life to the fullest.

  • This is a really great rendition of this song!

  • Do you know where I might get the tin whistle music for this song? o:

  • I would love to learn how to play this song... I wonder where I might find tabs for this song, or at least something that sounds similar that I can go with the words?

  • Muy Buen Tema y cancion***

  • This makes me feel happy

  • I always get overwhelming wanderlust when I listen to this song.

  • Beautiful pictures. A great song well done.

  • Wonderful blending of images & song. Thanks for sharing this delightful video!

I think we all have the 'Shire' in our hearts no matter where we are.

    Safe travels! :-)

  • I've just checked out, maybe, a score of other versions on YouTube and this is the ONLY one I'd found that sounds, not like a concert hall 'set-piece' but like a "walking song" as was intended! Very well done - and thank you!

  • The movie version has it's points but this one sounds - feels - like something that Bilbo or Frodo company might have sung as they walked along their way. The gorgeous photos just add to the overall feeling.

  • Amazing! where were the pics taken? just asking b/c they look a lot like a forest not far from where I live (in Massachusetts, btw)

  • They are random road pics from DevinArt. I don't know if one ot them is from Massachusetts, who knows ;)

  • o ok thnxs

  • @peacecanhappen27 Where in MA, if you don't mind me asking, because I would love to visit any place that looks remotely like these pictures?

  • @peacecanhappen27 is there places which looks like theese pics :O!

  • in the line "And under mountains of the moon." it should be"And under mountains in the moon."

  • really beautiful

  • thank you, im a really big fan of LOTR and i always asked myself how this would sound. i dont know if Tolkien saw this song like this but it just sounds beautiful so thank you.

  • @dragpad -- I'm the arranger and one of the recording artists on "The Starlit Jewel" CD -- This version was approved by the Estate of J.R. R. Tolkien, so we think he would have liked it as well.

  • @princessinger1

    good job.

  • Nice!!!*****

  • so beautifull...

  • Πολύ όμορφο!Ευχαριστώ!

  • Someone tell me, are the pictures in this video of real places? If so where are they! I need to find them!!!

Please... I need to go on a journey

  • Yest, they are real places. They're photos taken from DeviantArt (too much pics to credit the photographers, sorry).

I browsed the words "road" and "path", I think.

  • Go to New Zealand, or the UK. This looks like England and Scotland to me. I love England :-) thankfully i was born here.

  • There certainly are worse places to be born :]

  • Yep, I got lucky :-)

  • @OntologicalQuandary The trail at 1:05 is almost identical to one in Bellingham, Washington, USA. So much so that I'd swear that's one I've been on personally. But, the entire Olympic National Park and North Cascades National Park in Washington state are full of trails like this. I can only vouch for late summer, though; it might snow there during the winter.

  • @OntologicalQuandary im with you dude!

  • Amazing, simply amazing!
