this is fantastic, i have heard a few versions of this song/poem, but no one of them felt like a song you sing while you walk, but here it feëls like it should, i am speechless, simple amasing.
The version in the Rankin/Bass movie was pretty, but it didn't really sound like a "walking" song. This rendition is much more appropriate, I think. :)
I cannot express how much the Lord of the Rings has inspired, given hope in the darkest of times, comforted, and made us imagine more. The Lord of the Rings takes us away from our media, and yes im 14 year old american and i hate the media. I love The Lord of the Rings, I grew up on it. Forever live The Lord of the Rings.
Tolkien would be proud listening to this !!! Its REALLY AMAZING IT MAKES me wanna go and walk among the trees and the fields near the rivers and under the clouds of the summer sky . Stand in a hill under the shade of a tree and drink something cold ... more like ice tea :P
Ah, now this is music, and beautiful music it is. The Lord of the Rings has always been an old favorite of mine. I'm gonna learn this song myself and sing it sometime.
"It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to."
@rockingmeerkat: I tried to find the chords by listening to the song... i submitted the tab at ultimate-guitar...just search there for "The Road Goes Ever On"...don't know if the chords are 100% accurate but hope you have fun..=)
why did bilbo sing 'the road goes ever on and on, right from the door where it began. and far ahead the road goes on. and I must follow it if i can. pursuing it with eager feet until it joins some larger way where many paths and errands meet and whither then i cannot say"? is this a different version or a different song?
@TBgamer4life This song is based on the end of "The Hobbit", what you're talking about is from the beginning of "The Fellowship of the Ring", two different books.
OMG I accidentally downloaded this years ago when I'd gather many songs and burn them on CD's for my discman. I was listening to the beginning and was going to delete it but it sounded so nice I put it on a CD full of The Hobbit music.
@ryu8888 funny but its true unfortunately. i personally try to spend as much time exploring the woods and singing songs like this! its one way i live my life to the fullest.
I would love to learn how to play this song... I wonder where I might find tabs for this song, or at least something that sounds similar that I can go with the words?
I've just checked out, maybe, a score of other versions on YouTube and this is the ONLY one I'd found that sounds, not like a concert hall 'set-piece' but like a "walking song" as was intended! Very well done - and thank you!
The movie version has it's points but this one sounds - feels - like something that Bilbo or Frodo company might have sung as they walked along their way. The gorgeous photos just add to the overall feeling.
thank you, im a really big fan of LOTR and i always asked myself how this would sound. i dont know if Tolkien saw this song like this but it just sounds beautiful so thank you.
@dragpad -- I'm the arranger and one of the recording artists on "The Starlit Jewel" CD -- This version was approved by the Estate of J.R. R. Tolkien, so we think he would have liked it as well.
@OntologicalQuandary The trail at 1:05 is almost identical to one in Bellingham, Washington, USA. So much so that I'd swear that's one I've been on personally. But, the entire Olympic National Park and North Cascades National Park in Washington state are full of trails like this. I can only vouch for late summer, though; it might snow there during the winter.
Taught this to my patrol back when I was a Scout, made the long hikes much more enjoyable.

@JCDHobbes Thanks! That really helped! =D
Now I can play this song... Yay!
I only have some trouble with that special G, because I'm not such a good guitar player.
I transpose the song like 5 half steps down, and capo on the 5th fret.
So the G, in my case an E, doesn't really fit the song.
Thanks anyway for uploading the chords on Ultimate Guitar.
rockingmeerkat 7 months ago
@rockingmeerkat: you just have to play the E this way: x20200 ...if you don't understand this, then be free to send me a message ;)
p.s.: the song sounds better if you pick the chords...
(i'm sorry if my english is not that accurate)
