Wow..impressive. that mantis is bad ass. I would pump that humming bird full of steroids n let that mantis bulk up some. Get that guy on a cycle n dominate that flower bush...lol
It's not a contrived situation in a terrarium, so the mantis could have made a lucky catch by lying unseen behind the flower and lashing out lightning fast when the bird came within range, rather like white crab spiders catching bees. No humming birds in NZ so can't comment first hand. But I have to smile at Kyle17206 for the comment about mum being pissed off!
Lol im actually surprized this mantis even got to get close to the hummingbird, much less take one down (it HAD to be dead already, or nesting or something), i have a good amount of hummingbirds around my yard, and not only are they REALLY fast, there was also one that was agressive (towards lizards at least) and put up a hell of a fight when anything went near its nest.
So I'm guessing this one didn't have a fair encounter seeing as a mantis took it down
@Ramonerdna well hummingbirds require that they take a long rest and recharge every fo often, and while doing so they remain almost completely still, I would guess the mantis caught it resting
From the day we arrive on the planet And, blinking, step into the sun There's more to see than can ever be seen More to do than can ever be done There's far too much to take in here More to find than can ever be found But the sun rolling high Through the sapphire sky Keeps great and small on the endless round It's the Circle of Life
I still don't understand how mantis can kill mice and birds. They don't have venom and their claws are not as strong as to overcome the inertia of the insanely rapid wing-strokes of a hummingbird. I wish I knew what I was missing here...
that sort of looks like salvia greggii. I just had to move one because I was trenching. the hummingbirds still come back looking for it. that herb's a little peculiar in that it sort of has a ganja-y sort of smell.
is this in the carribean? cuz i am from there and we have mantis like that and humming birds, mostly seen mantis eatting inspects, but i'd love to see one eating a bird, and their my favorite insect, i had afew of them, big greens and little deadleaf mantis "little brown ones" but now i am sticking to chameleons :P most awesome animal, but mantis is second :D
the hummingbird is hovering flowers from flowers one day trying to feed on nectar. then suddenly it got a heart attack and died. the mantis was nearby and saw everything; that's how the mantis got a free meal, as you can see here! :)
@Az0ngl33 u can be right, but i think ur wrong, mantis in the wild only eat alive animals, though i tamed one, and i fryed chicken, and striped off alittle piece to feed to my pregnant female one, and she ate the chicken, also i put vitimins on it, and calcium so she would be healthy, she was wild, but now tame,
hey, u never know man. i believe that the mantis did not attack this bird, regardless of what the owner of this clip said. i believe it died from other causes. if you can't tell that then you're just lamed! haha xb

I love hummingbirds but its best that you left it alone. Chances are the bird would not have survived after the mantis struck it. I scared a hawk that was in my yard from a mourning dove. The hawk was eating it alive and the dove ended up dying 2 days later from injuries.
@MikeDaFerret Believe it or not, the mantis killed the hummingbird. They strike & grab with their sharp arms & hold on tightly as they feast on the live animal. I have seen other videos of them attacking & eating mice, snakes, hummingbirds, frogs, etc.
Last year one in my backyard attacked me & grabbed my finger with it's sharp little arms & I couldn't let go right away. It was clingy & sharp! I found one today that bit my pinky, yes it hurt. They're everywhere, & they're territorial!
@ilovemiamiheat6 shutup with the chuck norris, justin bieber, DAMN NATURE YOU SCARY, serious we are sik off it, im sure im not the only one who thinks that!!!
@MikeDaFerret Insects are far stronger relative to their size than "higher" life forms. An ant can carry over 100X it's weight, so an insect the size of a bird, reptile or mammal can usually overpower it. Good thing they don't get *really* big.....
@Snoep76239 Actually there are Giant Praying Mantises in Godzilla, Kamakiras,EXCEPT they aren't as badass as the real Mantises! They should consider making a far stronger Mantis monster in the future!
@GT5Enthusiast There's a video of someone having a mantis chew on his finger... For like 2 minutes, and then the mantis getis like into his finger and starts to hurt him and he can barely pry the mantis off his thumb. Funny stuff.
