@Schijoni The book is called "THE PERSIAN BOY" by Mary Renault. It is the second book in the trilogy about Alexander of the author. It tells the story of Bagoas in first person. It is a very beautiful and romantic novel. Bagoas's love for his Lord Alexander, so submissive, so committed, so beautiful!!! I recommend the book because when you read it notes that the character of the film is based on that novel. It is much better appreciated the wonderful performance of Francisco.

Beautiful writing and descriptions by Mary Renault, who wrote many books set in ancient times and all of them are wonderful. Read Fire from Heaven, Renault's story of Alexander's childhood and youth; another great book. I always wished for The Persian Boy to be made into a film and Oliver Stone's movie is the closest we're probably going to get.

The are 3 version's of Alexander, the theatrical version [shown in theatres] the directors cut and Alexander re-visited released on dvd 2007. This is the only version that uses all the footage filmed. It runs 31/2 hours long, the only version with Alexander on his death-bed saying to Bagoas " Tell me Bagoas, have I made you happy? I don't know what happiness is." I own all 3. So much was lost when the library at Alexandria was burned we can never know. Cleopatra was know to pray at his tomb.

No doubt Hephaistion was Alexander's lover and friend at times. But as for Bagoas...I doubt he was more to Alexander than a precious toy. Alexander liked having beautiful things around and I think that's why he kept Bagoas so close. There's not historical evidence of Bagoas and Alexander except for the kiss and a few mention of "Beloved" Bagoas. I think it's sweet Bagoas have someone that doesn't abuse him but I doubt more complex emotions developed. A bit hero-worshiping....

@arescraft I can, but not immediately. I researched Bagoas, and what was actually known about his life, particularly his time with Alexander, quite extensively. But that was some time ago and the links aren't ones that I've kept. Also, some of the information I gathered came from reference books and various other texts. However, if you doubt what I've said, I'm happy to hunt down that information again. I'll post another @ reply comment to you when I have it :)

I can give you the detail - if you want to research it online to confirm it you can :) Obviously we already know that they were pysically intimate. Alexander gave Bagoas his own villa and instructed all his officers and courtesans to 'render him honours'. One refused - Orsines - who called Bagoas a 'whore', and paid for it with his life after Bagoas influenced Alexander to have him put to death.

Later Alexander gave Bagoas the position of a trierarch, so clearly he was not simply a pleasure slave, but someone trusted and respected. Many historians have written that their relationship was that of a love affair, and also that it was common knowledge among Alexander's people, and accepted by them. Hope this helps!
