Considering it's supposed to be 8000+ years in the future, that's a very 20th-century, very conservative tune. I think they should have been a bit more radical--using Lucy scales, for example.
@NevilleRhysBarnes Maybe, but the Duniverse is slightly regressive...I mean they fight with swords. And during the 80s, the sound of the Chapman Stick was considered quite unique and unusual.
The Atreides get stoned and kick out some early 80s adult contemporary. Stewart was a perfect choice for Gurney, I really liked the cast, the book itself should have been the screenplay and it should have been a miniseries about 12 hours long or more, oh well! I enjoy all 2 minutes Stewart is in the movie
i wonder if anyones tried to build a real-life version of the baliset with 9 strings based on the detailed description in the dune encyclopedia. thatd be cool!
I found out that this piece was written by Emmett Chapman (inventor of the Chapman Stick) after looking at the "stick" website. It is available on Chapman's CD called Parallel Galaxy and the track is called "Backyard".
"smoked grass... or eaten spice" - Or maybe smoked spice. Which then begs the question, after smoking spice, would they get the munchies for food containing spice?
That is a great tune! Unfortunately, this piece is NOT on Toto's 'Dune' soundtrack, or even the limited release of the COMPLETE SCORE. A real shame considering the music is superb.
That melange they smoked must have been some good shit.

0:39 Thufir: Paranoid.
Kynes: Sleepy.
Yueh: Hallucinating.
Paul: Goofy.
Gurney: Jamming.
And of course Leto: Sober.
The many classic reactions of smoking Spice through a bong.

That's an actual instrument. In real life it's known as a Chapman Stick.
