I just signed my contract to attend nuclear propulsion school as an enlisted man! I'm shipping out to Great Lakes on January 5th, and I can't wait to "power" through Charleston and become the third generation of nuclear submariners in my family.
Could I join the submarine force with a slight breathing irregularity and mild ADHD (I take medication, but it has been increasingly easier to control without the meds, caffeine works well) I have a B+ to A- GPA. The breathing irregularity is non-asthmatic.
@baberaider18 Holy shit, I forgot I ever made this comment here. Yeah, the irony is the only way I could join now is by getting a college degree and going in as an officer since I got disqualified when trying to join as enlisted. Oh well.
I don't know what branch I want to join. I'm a freshman in high school and I'm 99.9% sure that I want to join the military, but I don't know if I want to join the Marines or the Navy. My eyesight is too bad to be a pilot (20/100). I love boats, I love guns, I love submarines, and I love yelling. I really can't figure this out and I can't figure out if I want to be an officer or a enlistee...
@Abeastlypie Well sense this was posted a year ago im guessing your a sophomore now. But I really hate to break this to you...but with 20/100 vision there isn't much the military is going to allow you to do.
I served with LT Carter on SSN 708. Great guy, would definitely serve with him again, but he did threaten to stab me in the eye with a grease pencil and give me "Grease Poisoning". I'm sure I deserved it at the time, but "grease poisoning"... really?
Yeah, I did 5 years as an enlisted submariner. I'd do it again in a heartbeat, but it definitely is pretty stressful at times. Choose your rate, choose your fate.
Actually I was a "stupid coner nub" (A-gang) for a while. Got out, after 7 years, as a MM1 (SS/DV) and went on to work at a nuke plant as a Nuclear Plant Operator. Made $145,000 last year with no degree and $165,000 in 2007. Navy is a great way to jump start a career. Join and work hard and you will be rewarded. We are constantly hiring in the civilian nuke field for all ex-Navy Engineering rates.
Random rant. Sorry. I know quite a few of my ex-nuke buddies who went to work for power plants and are doing quite well. I'm just trying to test my abilities in Biomedical Engineering right now before falling back on experience. Former fast attack MM2 (ss) nuke
my uncle was on a submarine during korea and it sunked so dont call them "stipid coner nubs" their heros we fight for freedom! they will never be stupid coner nubs they protect you every day and you should thank them! not calling them nubs nor stupid!
Coner refers to submarine personnel not working or having any interaction with the reactor. This term only has relevance to nuclear submarines. I am sorry to hear about your uncle, and I respect all of my fallen submarine brothers. Nub refers to newly arrived personnel that have yet to qualify much and are therefore unable to be properly used. And anyone can be stupid. I was called much worse.
We had exercise bikes, stair climbers, a treadmill, stuff like that, tucked in wherever we could fit it. There's plenty of ways to improvise, of course.
Haha, he isn't in the military. I don't know any hippies that are in the Military. But then again, they say the soldier is the most anti-war individual.
Yeah, but in the country, or at least on the Internet, there a bloody load of them XD. also, good luck join the US army, in most people (Outside the US) they are a whole lot better than the marines.
Oh, yes. Very true. A LOT of hippies, mostly stupid college students. And thanks for the luck. I agree. I used to be into the whole Semper Fi Marines thing, but I saw them for what they really are...overrated. A former Marine actually told me that. He left the Marines to join the US Army.
Yes, there is extensive psychological screening to serve on submarines (I am a former submariner myself, was an enlisted sonar technician, 1999-2003). Also the warfare pin we wear, for officers it is Gold Dolphins, for enlisted it is Silver Dolphins, requires knowledge of all major systems of the submarine (must be able to draw diagrams, explain use, etc.) as well as how to fight disasters. All submariners must earn it within 9 months. All personnel respond to emergencies on a submarine.
U.S. is the S.Korean ally which I can believe in most. And a S.Korean Immigration serves as in the Navy Submarine Force. That means our alliance and saved motherland. S.Korean never forget U.S veteran who fought against N.korean Communism. ----From S.korea.
Ha.."that 12 hours is yours..there might be SOME training"..maybe once you have your warfare pin.
I went out on a fast attack this past Summer with NROTC and the J.O.'s said they had to spend that time studying or qualifying for different things and that they had to choose between sleeping, eating, and hygiene at times.
gforcewarrior is correct. Submarine life is very stressful; it is common to spend 2 days without sleeping. Personally, the longest I ever spent without sleep while underway was 4 days. You could stand a 6 hour watch underway, be halfway back to the rack, then get called to return to assist in operations, or there could be a drill, or an actual fire or other emergency. The mission always takes precedent over over sleeping. Also I was in 2 real fires on the submarine, they were out quickly.
They are asking me to pay them $25,000 back. I had re-enlisted.... then the Navy felt I was infit for duty and seperated me (Honorable Discharge) and now they gave me a bill for $25,000 to recoup for portions of the re-enlistment bonus they gave me.

Join the Navy as a corpsman. You'll be able to have the option to work with the Marines. Corpsmen are needed everywhere.

The ships have fitness areas. Not sure about submarines.
