Because you have such close neighbors, get yourself a BB rifle and keep it stored, full of BBs, by the back door. Next time the deer comes around, it just takes a second to cock the rifle and aim dead center at the deer's side & fire a BB into it. The BB will not seriously injure the deer but it will sting it like a bee and the deer will take off immediately and probably not come back.

I have seen deer stomp dogs to death, yours was very lucky.

While deer do level gardens to the ground this was not what that was about. Next time take notice if there is a fawn under the tree (like here) and then simply call your dog in. In this case the deer wasn't after your garden, but simply trying to retrieve her baby. In that case, call your dog in and keep it there until the deer leaves.
