Have you ever seen the show Stargate SG-1? If you like sci-fi shows with comedy in it Stargate is PERFECT. Richard Dean Anderson (he played macguyver) is absolutely hilarious and there are plenty of serious scenarios that are serious and switch to comedy quickly.
Search "O'neill vs Ba'al" on youtube and youll see what I mean.
Doctor Who (1963-1989) didn't take itself seriously because it was filmed in someone's garage and basement with cardboard sets, which was why Tom Baker's doctor was perfect for the show. The never took the show seriously, which was why viewers liked him so much.
This scene is on the list because it was sad as all get up to see so many people's favorite Doctor say goodbye. While comparing Doctors is like comparing Bonds (purely personal and subjective with no absolute right or wrong answer), it seems that newbees always jump on the bandwagon when a new actor is introduced and declare him the best (ie Daniel Craig and David Tennant). Older crowds don't partake in thos polls as much and in time, it's Connery and Baker who really last as iconic figures.
@elfhermie does't longevity play into it too. i mean Sean and Tom are who ppl remember in the roles. does that necesarrily = them as the best? i don't think so unless you define the criteria for being the best clearly. ie in 007's case if you were defining best as accuracy to the book well Connery would lose points on his accent alone and technically Dalton would come up trumps. but its subjective. Sean and Tom are indeed the icons but that doesn't always (does sometimes) = the best
@227060 Best simply means the one YOU enjoy watching the most. The YOU is interchangeable. That's why there really are no true bests. Still, for a show that, at least here in the States, was only shown casually on PBS stations and was NOT popular with the mainstream by any means, it's a real testament to Tom Baker's likability how so many people to this day (who watched Who in secret) say "the one with the scarf was the best". I agree, but absolutely love Pertwee and Hartnell (and Dalton).
@elfhermie well yes and no. I mean take Dr Who for example In my humble opinion of Series 1-4 I regarded series 4 to be overall the best, but having said that my personal favourite is series 3. i do not disagree that you know these polls or stats of the best at anything don't really mean much and its all subjective, i just mean best and favourite aren't always the same. freuenlty they are but not always. i think ppl regard Tom as best was cos he was there for so long + so alotta ppl's 1st Doctor
why is this regeneration the best? people might think but this is debateable this one is/ why not Peter Davison regeneration huh? well it was iconic i guess but it wasn't the best nor second best, it deserves to be on the list but at number 10 or 9 or 8
@StarflowerVids I think there was also the reason that Tom Baker was not getting along well with John Nathan Turner with the slight changes of the show and all that
@lkgrave Colin Baker was underrated, no doubt. In fact, there hasn't been a "bad" doctor to date, all interpretation have kept the essence of the character. Everyone has their favorites, and it's usually the version who introduced the viewer to the show. If another actor had played the Doctor rather than Tom during the time when the series took off, that Doctor would have been lorded as the best one. Timing is everything. Especially in this show. ;)
@kamwrites Spot on friend. whatsmore Tom's popularity is also tied into his longevity. i mean when u are on the show for 7 years u are gonna be alot of ppl's first doctor aren't you. not to do the man discredit he is awesome. u are right about the interpretation. so long as the Doctor has a TARDIS, travels in space/time and loves doing it, rights wrongs and is generally not a killer, then you CANNOT play him wrong, he is supposed to be a jumble of personality traits
Even if the writing was a bit poor for an episode, and the special effects were atrocious, Tom Baker's portrayal of the character could carry the scene.
I absolutely agree. In fact (ignoring that BSG comment) I have nothing to add, really. You said it all. Baker and Pertwee were My Doctors (it alternates between the two, but they are pretty much even.) Both actors were unique in that they just played the Doctor as themselves, and it's something that I think come off extremely well.
But why do you always forget K-9? He is a companion, after all, whether you liked him or not. (You never mention him, so I don't know if you do or not.)
@PrincexJoker People dont say Davison? thats annoying hes undderated but really epic and great acting. He was quite vulnerable so in his last ep him going into action was really why it was voted as best episode all time
Most lamentable thing from this scene? the music. It feels like I'm watching a movie and something is playing an instrument in my ear. it doesen't connect at all. Couldn't they play something sad, or scary? "vaguely ominous" doesen't cut it.
ive met tom baker quite a few times at random conventions and the man is quite literally as eccentric as the character, which is why he made such a great doctor. Another actor ive met who is as funny and eccentric as tom baker is anthony stewart head, he is nothing like his character in buffy, would have made a truly awesome doctor, up there with baker and tennant!
I have to agree with your assessment of Logopolis--it is not a bad serial, but I think it's the weakest story of the New Beginnings trilogy, compared to Keeper of Traken and Castrovavla, the latter which is my all-time favorite Fifth Doctor serial. In fact, I've always thought the 10th doctor was a combination of 4 and 5, so I rank them as
My own personal favourite as far as Docto Who is concerned was Jon Pertwee. But then again I'm old enough to remeber JP's first appearence in "Spearhead From Space" way back in 1970. So as with uour very first girlfirend, you never forget your first time
favorite Doctor. Unfortunately during Tom Baker's time the series CGI obviously wasn't up to todays standards but in spite of that Tom Baker was unique. To me if you watch all of the Doctor's of course their personalities would be incorporated into their on screen personas. The regeneration scene had the most memorable emotions because Tom had done it for so long you couldn't help but feel a era ending. And a uncertain future of the series had begun.
Well, because I've only come into the series recently, after watching series 1 of the new Doctor Who, David Tennant will always be "my Doctor", despite Chris Eccleston being the first one I saw. But from what I've seen of Tom Baker's Doctor, he definitely comes a close second. I love his portrayal of the Doctor.
My favourite Doctor but not my favourite scene. Tom deserved to go out in style rather than having a bit of a fall after basically pulling a plug out.
lol. yeah, it's kind of like the death of Captian Kirk. He feel off a bridge while going after the remote. Pretty lame. Baker is numer one in my book!
Tom put so much of his own personality into his portrayal of the Doctor that it was hard sometimes to tell them apart, the real person and the fictional character. Plus, he was there so long that it was inevitable that there would be varying story styles. It was truly the Golden Era for the program. He was my first Doctor, too, and is still the best!
Viewer preference as to the " best" Doctor and companion varies according to individual taste. But the ratings do not lie. Tom Baker was the most popular doctor. Add Elisabeth Sladen to Tom Baker in 13 serials and you have an average viewership of more than 10 million per episode, a figure that blows any other 13 serial segment in WHO history totally out of the water.
This guy need to shut up & show the clip, he has an annoying voice

@Noimnotyouarenoob If you take away the hideous wardobe and writing he had to put up with, Colin Baker was probably a very under-rated Doctor.

Tom Baker's last season was one of the series worst. Too bad JNT did everything within his power to destroy the show.
