a simple drum setup and complicated, technical and totally following how the guitar leads... this band tells me playing metal does not need a big kit, Navene literally showing us what can you do with a simple drum kit. But in individual, i supposed he could be the best technical drummer that i've seen.
Could someone explain the rhythm that Navene uses for the snare (I think that's what he's hitting) from 2:01 to 2:13. I can't wrap my head around it! Just seems so irregular...
@temporaryonesix Its alot of double bounce grace notes first double bounce is on the snare, then one hit on the bass drum, the double on the bass, and accent hit on the snare just an alternating pattern, its called a rhythmic illusion, the actual pattern isn't to hard its all the shit he throws in between like the grace notes that alternate. Thats why if you don't have limb independence you shouldn't attempt AAL. Think of this drumming like Sped up TOOL and Deathcore together, with double bass.
@temporaryonesix It takes as long as you make it take, the first thing you need to do is break your right arm free from your right foot, that's the first step. To do what naviene is doing It could take you anywhere from 4-12 years just depends on how fast you learn and how hard you practice. The best way to achieve it is to SLOW DOWN, slow everything down. just start with a simple beat, and add things in... Like a hi-hat lift on the 3, or the and, of each measure I recommend you take lessons.
Thanks for your advice bro! I'm really envious of limb independence. Kudos to you if its something that you've developed. I'm not a drummer, but I hope to become one!
BTW, I can really understand the difficulty of RH/RF independence. CAFO around 1:10 - I try to have my foot match the kick and my hand match the cymbals. Sooo hard man...
I dont understand why people are hating on progressive music in general. This is part of the evolution of music. Along with bands ranging fron meshuggah to circa survive. Ofcourse many are reluctant to change.much like the beginning of rock in the fifties, to some it doesnt make sense...at all. But a selected few visionaries see the opportunities and are reaching.out to get a piece of it. I sure as hell know that i myself am trying to peek over the fence to see if if i can catch someinspiration
@Justatst123 I tried doing a triple stack on my kit, splash, china, crash, and it sounded like shit! I need to know what he was doing different dammit. It looked really badass though
@Justatst123 Ya! everytime he strikes it it looks like there might be another one between what I'm guessing is a splash and crash. Perhaps another splash, regardless it looks beast and sounds pretty damn sexy
@AnBerlinAddict i think you mean the stack cymbal. usually its two cymbals placed on top of each other. but i think he has three or even four on that stack.
@11nephilim Hey man what is the name if that song i only just got into septicflesh so good.. could you please tell me the name of the song at the intro
It's a shame that most AAL fans only talk about Tosin, don't get me wrong, he is incredible, but Navene and Javier are also just as incredible musicians and don't get as much credit as they should IMO.
@INtZshakenbake When they played in Orlando, Javier came out to a few cheers, and Navene followed, also with a few cheers. When Tosin came out, the place erupted.
@INtZshakenbake Neither Naver nor Javier were involved in the making of Animals As Leaders [the album]. They just play the songs live. But it was all about Tosin (guitars) and Misha (drums and guitars).
@amjan That is true, but they were both a big part of writing material for the new album. Navene's work in bands like Animosity and Fleshwrought deserves some recognition as well. Cause that shit is pretty incredible.
@INtZshakenbake I think They will get credit for the next album, Because they are involved with writing songs on the next album. Tosin deserves the credit for this album because, It is brain child.
@INtZshakenbake Javier's uploaded two videos of him playing. If you haven't already, then definitely check them out, because as you said, he's an incredible musician.
@ottawadrummer I bet you dont like off time signatures when you write music. Because this dude is easily one of the best drummers out there. Regardless of his writing process. the whole band recorded the new album. not producers. maybe this was programmed before they had navene, but so what. dude i s a robot.
@YeahImAnthony nah I like off time, time-signatures, I just find their style really irritating for some reason. If you listen to the older funk/motown drummers they were groovin to some pretty funky and off time rhythms, but you didn't think about it like you do with a lot of today's 'technical' music, it was just a good groove.
This sounds like their trying too hard. It's un-catchy so to speak.
@ottawadrummer Well your either mad jealous or you're like 99.9% of the old people in my town that hate change. Music evolves and shit changes. get with the program.
@ottawadrummer@ottawadrummer lol this is just a jam band, and all their songs are basically "noodleing" you think there some underlying meaning to this music? hate to break it to you all music is cut/paste.
@Necronaut no, they're playing songs. meaning? no, you have the wrong wording. Noodling is just taking a tricky riff you've put together and applying it randomly in a song with no correlation to the beginning or the song as a whole. It's just there to be flashy. And you're clearly not a musician if you think all music is cut and paste! How do you think they wrote songs before computers were around? 4-5 people got together and collaborated on ideas and let things flowed naturally.
@ottawadrummer ok noodling is not a finite term, its just an expression you could say, noodling can also be describing someone soloing or grooving. what does computers have to do with cut and paste. paper was used before computers and thats where the term cut and paste is from, when people would cut and paste paper. same with sheet music.
@Necronaut well more specifically it's gratuitous noodling that doesn't shape the song or provide any catchy melodies. Just a bunch of random crap sewn together.
@Necronaut this is phenomenal flow, ottawa drummer has no idea about what he is talking about. id like to see him try to even groove like navene. key word. " try "
@Necronaut it depends on how you look at it. but, music most of the time is certainly not random crap. knowing that tobin and the other guitar player have gone to music school, i know that without a doubt that they apply tons of their theory into wat they do.
@MetalHead420100 I wasn't making fun of you dude, its all good. I just genuinely thought the mistake of Tosin's name, Tobin Abasi, was hilarious, that's all.
um, how many cymbals are stacked off to the right? it looks like one underneath, bottom hat-style, then a big one, smaller one, and maybe another small?
@unccharris Comparing Navene with Mike is like comparing apples with pears if you ask me. They both have completley different styles. Navene could do it, but i don't think he really wants to.
his stack sounds so cool. and he's gotten so much better at playing these songs if you compare it to youtube vids of him playing from like 3-4 months ago, he's really putting his own twist on everything.
