What Reid said was inappropriate but its not like he was lying. Studies have shown that white people tend to be less menaced by "light skinned" blacks as opposed to their dark skinned counterparts. I'm a dark skinned black man and i feel that Reid was being honest. However, the "Negro dialect" remark was really fucked up. I think that Southern white people have funny (odd) accents but I wouldn't make a statement like that if i were a politician.

actually "negro" is simply spanish for "black" and may refer to anything that's black in spanish, not just a person. "negger" is just how 19th-century white southerners pronounced this spanish word, and i suppose a process of vowel heightening eventually changed it to "nigger". it is the result of contact between anglo-america and spanish america.
