  • 40. Read in the Hebrew Old Testament in Psalms the lyric designted "40".

  • why doesnt they sing this at the end of concerts anymore!!!!!!!!!!?!!?!!!!!

  • At 18 he thinks it would be like being 40 years, now I think it would be like to have 18 back

  • How long to sing this song?????!!!!

  • Psalm 40.

  • Beautiful, absolutely beautiful. There will never be another U2!

  • I'm gonna play this at my 40th birthday party next month.

  • I get goosebumps when I hear this song-this album changed my life too. U2-4ever.

  • This is one of my favorite songs.

  • ... and that is why personally I'm against a lot of aspects of organised religion. I'm a pacifist and I view religion in the world often as often a force to producing conflict as people's opposing views collide and when that is on a national scale, it becomes one of the biggest problems we have in the modern world. Back to U2, the overall theme of this album is anti-War and pacifism and I think that is the most important message to take from the album, no matter what your beliefs are.

  • I think the that Christians who are responding to the atheists in this discussion are missing the point. At the end of the day this is just a song, even if it does have lyrics taken from the bible, so it can be enjoyed by anyone no matter what their religious background and beliefs. Saying things like 'enjoy your vacuum of disbelief', and comments like that, are the reason on a wider scale that there have been many wars throughout history. Basically, people attacking other people's beliefs...

  • @athiest83 please don't ever listen to U2 again.

  • I like u2, i like this song.. But i don't like this version.. the live version is way better!

  • @athiest83

    Oh contraire.

Whenever you post something on a public forum such as this you are soliciting a response whether you want it or not. You should know that.

    Peace.

  • @athiest83

So you don't like proselytizing, Okay, that's cool, but guess what? U2 wrote the song and U2 performs it, so don't you think you should take it up with them? Just a thought.

    Enjoy the vacuum of unbelief.

  • @n8tureboy U2 didn't write it. It's called 40 because it's the 40th Psalm in the Bible. They just put it to music.

  • @sade1234567whatever

Thanks for the info. It's a beautiful song.

  • @athiest83 maybe you need to lighten up and not get such a stick up your ass about "religious crap" no offense just my opinion.

  • @athiest83 youre young and full of shit. no offence taken.

  • my uncle bob played this on his ipod on that bus ride to jail for five fingering discounting a case of shlitz...guess how many months he got?

  • you were saved by Jesus! in the form of BONO!!

  • yeah, Bono took these words from Psalm 40 because in the last 20 minutes of the recording of "War" they just missed one song to end it, so Bono took the Bible and "40" was born :)

  • and the lords name is....? Jehovah ...psalm 83:18

  • people who respond to this song - why not also respond to the sheer beauty of the psalms? This is Psalm 40, directly from God's word, and there are just so many more, with a timeless depth that will bring you to tears, speak to your every need, soothe your darkest hour, cheer with you in victory. Then there's Proverbs, the New Testament, Ruth.....the inexhaustible love just waiting here for you.

  • @jenrossyl I love Joshua 1:9 "This is my command: Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or get discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you always."

My personal favourite. Works in almost every circumstance.

  • @davidkerr6 It's quite amazing that you write that scripture now - as I am facing an incredibly frightening trial, and I have been declaring that I will cross the river and be strong, not be afraid of the giants, but enter the promised land with faith, because the Lord is with me. God repeated to Joshua to be strong and courageous, and I need every once of courage right now. Thank you

  • What's with all the retard atheists here? Stop trying to ruin a beautiful song and keep your willful ignorance to yourselves

  • 2000 years so far. Gabriel the Angel is Bono incarnate

  • @U2fan87 I'm an atheist, but it's easy to enjoy this music. It's like enjoying any fiction - you don't believe it but still get entertained. Besides, religous faith has inspired some beautiful music and art, would be a shame to miss it. Don't be too hard on yourself!

  • I LOVE U2!!!!:DDDDDD<33333333333

  • I am life long U2 Fan... I am also an athiest...for you to say i cannot appreciate the beauty and depth of U2's music over the years is quite shallow on your part. I am a huge fan of the band, have been since the day I bought the October album as a 12 year old kid living in Albany, Georgia. Your beliefs are your beliefs, beautiful art is a universal language. Paul

  • @n1airwaves yes, Wouldn't - made an important typo there ;)

  • the "lyrics" are actually a translation of Psalm 40

  • Bono said that religion is what you get when spirit leaves the room

  • When l was a child.........

  • As as Buddhist, I appreciate the nature of one's own choice for spirituality. As for this song, I would think no matter your religion (or lack thereof) it's one to be appreciated :).

  • @Papatauenga

SO true! I'm a Christian, and these lyrics hit so many different demographics! =)

  • Straight out of Psalms. God's Word sounds so beautiful when sung.

  • Romans 1:6 "Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ."

    In other words, U2!!! :)

  • @mbro7612 So true! :)

  • U2, the praise band!!!!!! :)

  • I'm not Christian, nor do I believe in a religion, but I love this song.

  • You don't have to be religious or anything to enjoy music like this

  • the edge playing the base sounds sickk..

btw this is the edge... clayton had gone home already that day when this was recorded :)

  • One of their most beautiful songs... :)

  • Boy howdy they just don't make Jews like Jesus anymore.

  • 17-04-2011: 40 yrs old... Thank u, Lord...

  • live,heard,torhout,werchter,so,good,last,perfprmance,net,doorgebroken,ik,was,19

  • War came out 28 years ago this month and changed my life forever, thanks you U2, you mean the world to me.

  • @KOSMICKEN09

Very well said. I was a young Marine in '83 and this band did alot to change the way I listened to music.

    One of my absolute favorites.

  • Wish you were still singing it, their older music is still the very best

  • Not religious but I love this song.

  • If I wasn't saved by Jesus this song would mean a thing to me.

  • @120TOMTOM then ur a dick, this song's bomb regardless of your imaginary space daddy

  • @rcameronswindsor well "his imaginary space daddy" wrote this beautiful song about 3000 years ago through the second King of Israel or didn't you catch the "40" as in Psalm 40. I believe he wants to be your daddy too! try a little love

  • @rcameronswindsor I'm not saying this is a bad song without being a disciple of Jesus, I'm saying this song is more meaningful to me because of my christianity.

  • @120TOMTOM please man........speak with some sense

  • @120TOMTOM Would or wouldn't?

  • @120TOMTOM faggot

  • I won't waste words: superb.

my claim to fame: saw u2 at nene college, northampton UK in oct. 1980, just before 'war' was released. 300 tickets for sale, 200 sold. 100 people later wishing they'd coughed up £3.50!

  • @torontoboy45 i love all their early stuff and simple minds

  • im not a believer, but this song is fantastic

  • If only U2 did more stuff like this....

  • No better way to end a youtube U2 jam than with 40.........

  • Praying for you BonoRulesForever. There is a reason the lyrics are beautiful. They are the words David penned while inspired by God himself. God loves you and you will find him if you seek him. Jeremiah 29:11-13

  • @vhjosh pray for yourself

  • Brilliant song!!!!!!!!Vote up for U2

  • @BonoRulesForever more beautiful lyrics in the Book of Psalms...

  • @Tomhrair They're the same "lyrics" !! That's why the song is titled "40" lol

  • Psalm 40

  • How long? :D

  • @cookmoore LOL

  • War is AWESOME!!! Favorite u2 album

  • i agree

  • such a fantastic song. i dont believe in god but the lyrics sure are beautiful

  • @BonoRulesForever The lyrics are taken from Psalm 40. The book of Psalms is a book of poetry.

  • @BonoRulesForever

I think the "beauty" of the lyrics you enjoy doesn't permeate into any inkling of understanding within you. It just seems a bit counterintuitive to find beauty in something without being able to comprehend one's relationship with an entity, understanding the nature of that beauty. If you don't believe in God, where is the beauty in any of U2's music? U2's lyrics are one of the most beautiful and most blatant signs of proof that something greater does exist.

  • @coolbeansguy

Also, not every single song is exclusively about religion.

  • @coolbeansguy

"If you don't believe in God, where is the beauty in any of U2's music?"

In the chords, the beats the harmonies, etc. If the words were different in this song, the melody would be just as stunningly beautiful.

  • @BonoRulesForever Bono didn't write them.

  • this is one of the albums i like most of U2

  • @davlor86 My favourite album is "Achtung baby", but this is my favourite song.
