For me these lyrics have also a meaning : When will my Love finally get her visa to come to me, how long must I sing this song... I will sing a new song when she will be here finally !!! Can't wait....!!!!!!
... and that is why personally I'm against a lot of aspects of organised religion. I'm a pacifist and I view religion in the world often as often a force to producing conflict as people's opposing views collide and when that is on a national scale, it becomes one of the biggest problems we have in the modern world. Back to U2, the overall theme of this album is anti-War and pacifism and I think that is the most important message to take from the album, no matter what your beliefs are.
I think the that Christians who are responding to the atheists in this discussion are missing the point. At the end of the day this is just a song, even if it does have lyrics taken from the bible, so it can be enjoyed by anyone no matter what their religious background and beliefs. Saying things like 'enjoy your vacuum of disbelief', and comments like that, are the reason on a wider scale that there have been many wars throughout history. Basically, people attacking other people's beliefs...
So you don't like proselytizing, Okay, that's cool, but guess what? U2 wrote the song and U2 performs it, so don't you think you should take it up with them? Just a thought.
yeah, Bono took these words from Psalm 40 because in the last 20 minutes of the recording of "War" they just missed one song to end it, so Bono took the Bible and "40" was born :)
people who respond to this song - why not also respond to the sheer beauty of the psalms? This is Psalm 40, directly from God's word, and there are just so many more, with a timeless depth that will bring you to tears, speak to your every need, soothe your darkest hour, cheer with you in victory. Then there's Proverbs, the New Testament, Ruth.....the inexhaustible love just waiting here for you.
@jenrossyl I love Joshua 1:9 "This is my command: Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or get discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you always."
My personal favourite. Works in almost every circumstance.
@davidkerr6 It's quite amazing that you write that scripture now - as I am facing an incredibly frightening trial, and I have been declaring that I will cross the river and be strong, not be afraid of the giants, but enter the promised land with faith, because the Lord is with me. God repeated to Joshua to be strong and courageous, and I need every once of courage right now. Thank you
@U2fan87 I'm an atheist, but it's easy to enjoy this music. It's like enjoying any fiction - you don't believe it but still get entertained. Besides, religous faith has inspired some beautiful music and art, would be a shame to miss it. Don't be too hard on yourself!
I am life long U2 Fan... I am also an athiest...for you to say i cannot appreciate the beauty and depth of U2's music over the years is quite shallow on your part. I am a huge fan of the band, have been since the day I bought the October album as a 12 year old kid living in Albany, Georgia. Your beliefs are your beliefs, beautiful art is a universal language. Paul
As as Buddhist, I appreciate the nature of one's own choice for spirituality. As for this song, I would think no matter your religion (or lack thereof) it's one to be appreciated :).
@rcameronswindsor well "his imaginary space daddy" wrote this beautiful song about 3000 years ago through the second King of Israel or didn't you catch the "40" as in Psalm 40. I believe he wants to be your daddy too! try a little love
@rcameronswindsor I'm not saying this is a bad song without being a disciple of Jesus, I'm saying this song is more meaningful to me because of my christianity.
my claim to fame: saw u2 at nene college, northampton UK in oct. 1980, just before 'war' was released. 300 tickets for sale, 200 sold. 100 people later wishing they'd coughed up £3.50!
Praying for you BonoRulesForever. There is a reason the lyrics are beautiful. They are the words David penned while inspired by God himself. God loves you and you will find him if you seek him. Jeremiah 29:11-13
I think the "beauty" of the lyrics you enjoy doesn't permeate into any inkling of understanding within you. It just seems a bit counterintuitive to find beauty in something without being able to comprehend one's relationship with an entity, understanding the nature of that beauty. If you don't believe in God, where is the beauty in any of U2's music? U2's lyrics are one of the most beautiful and most blatant signs of proof that something greater does exist.
40. Read in the Hebrew Old Testament in Psalms the lyric designted "40".

@n8tureboy U2 didn't write it. It's called 40 because it's the 40th Psalm in the Bible. They just put it to music.

In the chords, the beats the harmonies, etc. If the words were different in this song, the melody would be just as stunningly beautiful.
