My grandfather was in command of the Lake Champlain, CV-39 during the Freedom 7 mission. He's 94 now. He stated that there was an issue with the landing and acquisition of the craft, as the antenna didn't deploy. Someone had also stolen the tip of the explosive bolt cutter (squib as he called it) which was to be deployed from the UH34 to cut the antenna. The original purpose of the antenna was so that the carrier could locate the craft after it had landed. They expected it to be out of eyesight.

and the lm was never intended to reenter earth's atmosphere, so it could and did look like a toy - it wasn't supposed to be a piece of art. it turned out to be one anyway.
