I used to think there wasn't a such thing as a better singer than Whitney was in her prime, but, after hearing this garbage, I think otherwise. The whole song wasn't garbage just the bridge. But the bridge was the climax of the song making it the most memorable. That makes it even worse that Whitney messed it up. Mixed voice, full voice, whatever voice Whitney used it sounded strained. This song is clearly out of Whitney's musical range. I had to hear the original just to like the song again.

Oh Bless your heart, Whitney Baby! U tried. U really did... and you were sounding good for the most part. but that bridge kicked your butt (as it has just about everyone who has ever dared to take on this song). Aretha set the bar at an incredible high, and even though Whitney lowered the key, she STILL couldn't hit those notes.

Of course, the recording was old and the pitch was altered much higher than she actually sang it. Still, with both of these recordings, it's just a pleasure to hear Old Whitney. @iknowdasright I certainly disagree with you. @gosty111 is right, Aretha does use mix...still not as obvious as a lot of other singers but she does use it. However, She's so diverse vocally(the BEST!) she can alternate between chest and mixes. For Whitney, I think it may be more difficult because she never alternates, it's always been chest, chest, chest! Which is SUPER hard. That said, as much as I love my girl...it did get her! Poor Whitney, NO ONE is immune from drug abuse.

As incredible as Whitney's voice was during this era, her voice obviously just wasn't right for "Ain't No Way". Aretha's voice just has that gut wrenching, soulful elegance which brings the song to life while Whitney, an amazing belter, is just too much of a technical singer for it. If that makes sense, still love Whitney though! :)

@milljh711 aretha belted in this song, she just used her mixed voice (combination of chest and head, it helps women belt higher). she belted some wicked high soprano notes in 'ain't no way,' listen to the original. whitney always just used her chest or head voice.

@reznikator Too True, well in her earlier days, esp before Im your baby tonight Whitney did use her Mix ocassionally but most part raw gut chest belter and I HATE that because she woulda done so much more with her voice if she mixed more. However even on this tour she mixed on different songs, but she only did it when she played around like Love You Save By Mj (look it up) but when she went to belt she always pulled! Argh and she NEVER PRACTICED!

Exactly; it it such a tremendous effort to belt too high in your chest- unfortunately thats what she did and as she got older, the gap between her chest and head became evident and, I'm sure you know, she often belted really high in her chest and didn't have the transition she once had. I'm in agreement that Whitney could do anything in her prime!! She is the voice

Whitney fans love Aretha too. You can have your own musical preference. Ain't No Way will always be Aretha's song, but vocally and musically Whitney does it as well as Aretha. Because Whitney can sing anybody's song, and make it her own.
