I totally agree with you that saying something like "That's nostalgic." would sound really weird.

However, I'm not sure that the alternatives you provide, though better, would be much better. If you wanted to comment on something that is nostalgic when someone referenced it, it seems more natural in English to say something like, "Oh yeah! I remember that." and then proceed to make some further comment about the nostalgic thing, rather than comment directly on its nostalgia.

In any case, the only situation where you'd probably use "nostalgic" and not have it sound weird would be talking objectively about the feeling itself. Example (besides my comment itself):

I would never say, "I like nostalgic anime." That sounds very weird to me. I would say, "I like old school anime."

"Those were the good old days" doesn't sound so weird to me, but it depends how far back you're referring to. Same thing goes with, "That brings back memories." I could see myself using those phrases when referring to high school, but not something that happened less than 5 years ago.

i love the cat assistance! use him again sometime. you'll get more views, totally. usually when i hear someone say, "ah, those were the good old days," they're talking about old-school video games, and older people tend to use "that brings back memories" to mean other, less materialistic memories. lol. that's my impression, at least. American youth culture doesn't seem to talk that much about the past.
