I love Chinese language and culture and am also gay. I have been living with my partner since we both met in 1985. It is wonderful to just live your own, honest life without having to please others.
I spent the last summer studying in Taiwan. A wonderful country. I hope to also study in China.
For me being gay is not about sex. It is about honest relationships with others and, especially, being true to you.
Thanks to all the brave Chinese friends and Thiago!!
I live in Beijing and i feel being gay isnt a problem. I have lived in USA also and constantly hear gay bashing. It's odd how such a traditional country handles it better than a land that is supposed to be free and equal. I hope one day everyone can live with eachother and be accepting, and not blindly hate or bash for whatever reasons.
Most Chinese when they deal with gay issue, they are dealing with Chinese tradition which like to have guys get married and continue on the next generation. In the west, when people deal with gay issue, they are not only deal with tradition but also religion issue. That's why there is gay bashing, physically, and sometimes killing. I feel China should deal the gay issue the right way seriously to provide positive environment for the gays.
Who says there is no freedom of speech? They are mostly communicating in Chinese so for those who don't speak Chinese. Please don't accuse China before you learn Chinese. In the US, most gay communities just promoting, gay bar, sauna, circuit party where drugs and unsafe sex are practiced. Gay business people taking advantage of gays and making money out them. Issue like safe sex and gay politics, gay rights, and gay relationship are not talked about.
What kind of gay infrastructure does the US have, like bareback fucking and speed? My dear, America is the most anti gay country in the world. Wake up and smell the coffee!!
I see that you do not understand the word "infrastructure" ... Gay "rights" is a child of American thought. It came with late capitalism, which means America, not forty years of Communism, meaning China. Gay Rights and Western Gay institutions are weakly copied by East Asia, like everything else modern from the West.
You do realize, gabsylv, that your country is despised pretty well everywhere for its religious fanaticism, racism, and fascism? You sure live in a modern country alright!
Actually what we call today gay rights, that is the non-discrimination of different sexual orientations, didnt start in the US, nor 40 years ago. In many cultures gay people managed to gain equal rights and treatments, throughout the millennia, Just read about LGBT people throughout history. In Europe for example it was the Napoleonic code that decriminalised homosexuality. And it was in the Austrian-Hungarian Empire that the scientific research of Homosexuality begun(Magnus Hirschfeld).
That's exactly what I've been thinking. There are like gay radio stations in the US and all they play is virtually all straight musicians, so they are basically just exploiting gays and lining the coffers of already wealthy artists. It's absolutely comical.
Without the mass commercialism, the Western notion of Modern Gay Culture would have no vehicle by which to globalize to the peripheries (like China). The entire project of Gay Culture you see in this Video is rooted in late Capitalist culture. Don't try to make the cheap copy superior to the model.
An excellent exposition! This is an aspect of China's inevitable cultural opening and globalised sociocultural development. I especially enjoyed the self-introduction by Thiago. Just wonder though -- after all those years, couldn't he do his presentation in Chinese? I live in Indonesia, which is having its own struggle with acceptance of the gay lifestyle in a heavily family-oriented society (similar to those in most of Asia). A lot of openly gay guys (or at least swishy ones) simply get married

Of course China has no gay infrastructure like the US because of the enormous gap in our sexual-political consciousnesses.
