  • Look closer! Kirk have the Pick of Destiny... that shit doesnt work... :O

  • BOB CUNT hahhaha

  • not to mustaine

  • *James plays a few open notes*

    Kirk:Holy Shit!

  • kids... dont take drugs

  • notice how they simplified the live version. to this day it still haunts him that he cant play it

  • The bass player is getting frustrated and he's not even in the band

  • haha the bob cock made me laugh, and yeah it does happen to everyone, i mean im like good at galloping, but a riff i had to learn for my band involved some gallops and open chords and i couldnt do it at all, even though it was pretty simple, but i just kept practising and i got it so just shows just keep trying and youll do it :)

  • i bet kirk was thinking "JUST LEMME DO A FUCKING SOLO"

  • this is kinda jaw-dropping

  • GRRRR NO SOLOS AND DROP C MAKE KIRK MAAAD!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Lol...bob cock

  • well metallica didnt get famous because of kirk for sure....

  • @Mateking88 he wrote good solo that's for sure.along the best ever, many top 100 list of best solos ever are kirk along the very best with hes solos like master of uppets and the One solo, and fade to black etc... so when you say so, then you wrong, because many people who play guitar have him as idol, and that gains fame to metallica, and you can't say any thing now, because that's the truth, and its doesn't matter if you think he sucks or any thing, still many other people think hes the best

  • All those colored pedals together look like crayon boxes

  • Haha the riff is pretty easy... Kirk is probably not used to Drop C

  • it was a shitty riff anyways, sometimes you have these musical blocks and off days as a musician, people who are here to just criticize Kirk just don't understand that and therefore shouldn't be taken seriously.

  • i thought i was the only one like this

  • you gotta admit, its a pretty awkward rhythm.

  • hahaha (yeah i got that its the notes in between that are fucking with me)

  • BoOb Rock killed Metallica

  • The notes "in between" are the same fucking notes hahaha

  • HOLY SHIT!!! EPIC

  • bob cock XD

  • You can't erase the masterpiece, which is Metallica, but their recent stuff since acquiring Rob Trujillo is really bad music. I even liked their load albums, because it was still high quality music, but if a local band was putting this stuff out it wouldn't even get picked up. It's unfortunate they didn't just retire, once they went to the studio and came up with this crap. Their Load albums were unfairly reviewed because of their natural style change, which caused them to force this style.

  • i have to do it som times

  • 1:02 GET TO FUCK THIS SHIT...

  • LOL bob cock

  • Every time metallica goes into a studio...they act like it's there first time recording.

  • em sure kirk was flying high..he looks so freaky :P

  • Kirk seems all drunk and cool for a change... 00:46

  • All their older stuff is so much more difficult, I cat believe he would struggle with such a simple riff

  • @mattgardner20 With 3 notes, lol.

  • TIN CAN OF MONSTERRRRRRRAH!

  • and this is the reason why megadeth is, has been, and always will be better than Metallica

  • @TheMetalGuy852 And this is the reason you are going to shut the fuck up you fucking fanboy

  • @METROIDROCKSXP98 or it's the reason why you feel compelled to defend people who could give two shits about you. Either way , megadeth rocks and still rocks, metallica has sucked for years

  • @TheMetalGuy852 That why metallica is the biggest band and megadeth is just a tiny shit band

  • I can see why Krik was fubbing up, you try it... damn, they should have used this version of SKOM for the album, that would have been sick!

  • It´s Lars

  • This happens to every single guitarist, everyone

  • @theangryguitarguy

I hate shitty guitar days. Not to mention being in the world's biggest Metal band is a lot of pressure on poor Kirk.

  • @theangryguitarguy Very true.. You get a rhythm in your head, or what you think it is and you can't do what you're supposed to be doing.

  • @theangryguitarguy yeah, when they're 8

  • @theangryguitarguy Talk for your self.

  • kinda funny you'd think kirk hammet coming from Exodus originally would actually be good at riffing, but it took him like 3 hours to learn how to pedal the low E string which is something he's been doing since 85. Don't understand why they got rid of Mustaine if it wasn't for him Metallica wouldn't be who they are. Don't get me started on Lars... Hetfeild needs to grow a pair and tell Lars to give him more a share and say in the band. Over all listen to Exodus there actually good..

  • nice 7 stringer James.

  • All musicians have those days where you just can't seem to get it down right. I know I have.

  • haha funny comment bubbles

  • They're playing Simon

  • hahaha JAMES loves kirk LoL

  • I think JAMES and Kirk and Lars treat themselves as brothers..that's why metallica last for 30 years...if Cliff didn't died maybe metallica is one of the epic metal bands ever. Working with dave caused a lot of problems that's why he was separated from tallica. Its not about how great a guitar player is but how you worked very comfortable with your co-band. Metallica is solid band unlike band these days that end up disbanded because of uneasy working from each other.

  • kirk can't play because the song don't have wah

  • that's not hard to learn.

  • so kirk can´t play She wolf riff hahahahahaha

    Dave God Mustaine!!!!

  • this video stopped me from quitting guitar playing haha

  • Hahahahaha

  • Kirk seems like a douche

  • Bad day for him, it's not strange... i know to be nervous and i couldn't learn anything that day.

  • And the Metal show said he's better than Dave Mustaine wut a joke

  • At 00:54, James is thinking my god I wish Dave was still here...

  • @kaputa814 Amen to that!

  • ...so metalica didnt even write the song and it still took them that long to release it....FAIL

  • awesome lyrics

  • It would be embarassing recording St. Anger and Lulu...

  • This is a very easy riff compared to the stuff he used to play on their first four albums...

  • funny how Lars laughs at him. He have some problems keeping his tempo on the drums lololo

  • bloody hell kirk is a cranky bastard hahah

  • This is how I feel anytime someone wants me to teach them guitar. I don't have the patience. Pick the thing up and learn it your goddamn self!

  • Fucking pathetic. That riff sucks too.

  • it's not that hard of a riff, maybe he just had a bad day

but still, they changed it on the album

  • Dudes thats the only song that metallica cant play full. No wonder its hard to learn.

  • guys give him a fucking break, hes was having a bad day or maybe was hungover or something. he seems to be able to play a fuck-load of other songs fine...

  • Just a bunch of business men getting their work done.

  • If I saw that snare ever in my life, I'm going to throw it somewhere we he can't reach!

  • so complicated. it's got 3 notes

  • @makimachawngthu it's the picking pattern, not the amount of notes. You'd know that if you could actually play guitar and not just Guitar Queero.

  • LOL come on kirk, i worked out how to play this by ear in my first 2 years of playing.

btw tallica are my favorite band ever and always will be.

  • This riff is so simple, Kirk should have picked it up straight away.

  • that s what happens when you have a lack at music theory.

  • @tsaggarucci thats just so not true, i say this same thing to every1 and its 100% correct, every1 has got to learn and every1 makes mistakes if its a begginer or a top class pro every1 makes mistakes its the whole point to playing. if there was no mistakes every1 could just pick it up and play it, as the saying goes you learn by mistakes, keep playing it over and over and you will get it in the end

  • @tsaggarucci ur kidding right? believe me, he's got his theory

  • @tsaggarucci AND talent

  • Every guitar player knows what he's feeling haha, it's so annoying

  • @MooseAtYou

correction: Every noob guitar player knows what he's feeling.

  • Great video but the comments are annoying.

  • I hope you guys know they were just kidding

  • just because Kirk is having trouble with the speed riff doesn't mean he sucks. It means that he has more comfort playing lead and when it comes to rhythm it can get tricky at points. that's my opinion but hell i can't have an opinion because i know someone will just say you're wrong. I don't give a shit.

  • get rid of that fucking adds during the video...

  • Kirks expression from 1:52-1:58 ... PRICELESS :D

  • Kirks expression from 1:52-1:58 ... PRICELESS :D

  • actually its always hard at first but eventually you'll get it right done, if you are a musician you'll know this so don't judge him cuz no one is perfect.

  • Yes! finally kirk can't play something, first for everything :)

  • OMG I can play better than Kirk!

  • Comment removed

  • Didn't this douche win heavy metal guitarist of the year one time???? WTF...

  • BOB COCK RULES!!!!!!!! PRIMUS SUCKS! lol

  • It's harder to write own songs than to cover ;). And in the end Kirk gets it =). James and Kirk are still great musicians!!

  • I have trouble with this, Battery and All Nightmare Long. Its the string of notes that fuck with me. Its not my rhythm style. All good songs, but.....yeah.

  • no wonder metallica take like 10years to finish a single record :p

  • @SuperJosch13 the reason why metallica can't finisht records fast is because all of them are good and they do a lot of tours

  • Bob Cock... AHEhe ahae hea

  • BOB COCK! LOL!

  • 1:03

    Lars : Call Dave Please

  • @DrGustavoMarques lol Dave doesn't play in anything aside from standard E. (This is two whole steps lower)

The phone call would only last a few seconds, and would go something like this:

    Hey it's Dave

    Lars who?

You want me to play in what tuning?

    *Click*

It's all subconscious for Kirk. He wants to play the riff, but his brain is saying: 'NO, NU METAL BLOWS DICK; THIS IS GOING TO BE A BAD ALBUM'

St Anger was awful, but at least Death Magnetic was a step in the right direction.

  • @monox2k You know why Dave doesn't in anything besides that? 'Cause he is uncreative. And what the fuck does Nu-Metal have to do with anything?

  • @Avzzor That's what St Anger is bro.

I hate the notion that drop tuning your guitar is somehow correlated with untapped creativity. Dave found his niche, and he knows that his band's sound is not only his legacy, but also a sound that his fans have identified with for 30 years.

I play in tons of different tunings personally (on 6/7 and 8 string guitars) but I think it's ridiculous to call the guy who basically co-created thrash metal 'uncreative' because he doesn't play in drop tunings.

  • @monox2k So you're saying that Sad But True from their Black Album is Nu-Metal just because they played in Drop D tuning? Most Metal bands play in Drop C or Drop B tuning. Are you calling Cannibal Corpse Nu-Metal 'cause they normally play in Drop D or Drop B tuning? I love Dave Mustaine, hes a great guitarrists but so is Kirk... Maybe not as good but still awesome

  • @Avzzor Sad But True is in D standard

  • @heavymetalfool My bad... Still pretty low tuning

  • @Avzzor HELL no, you completely missed my point. Though I must say, I think Black Album is overrated garbage, so I don't care for Sad but True. Anyways:

All I was getting at was Dave's quote from the late 90s relating to the then trend of:

1: Tuning your guitar as low as possible. 2: Playing as few notes as possible.

Most of my favorite bands play in the c-eb range, but they don't play 2-3 chord repetitive trash like Korn. I think most good thrash/groove/sludge/prog is in low tunings.

  • @monox2k I love the Black Album.

Yes I do know what Nu-Metal is and I do know that it's garbage but St. Anger ain't near being Nu-Metal, it's just typical Heavy Metal but without solos. Just compare the song Frantic to any Korn song. They don't sound anything like each other.

Yeah most of those genres are often played in like Drop C or Drop B

  • @Avzzor I don't know, I've listened to St Anger front to back and it hit me the same way each of their albums since AJFA has: 'This band is capable of so much more.'

DM was a step in the right direction, but even on that album, a lot of the songs were bland; the mixing was abysmal (especially the drums); and James, again, mailed in the lyrics.

I'm 100% for creative freedom, but all Metallica did from 1990-2007 was alienate their 80s fanbase.

(The people responsible for their success)

  • @monox2k Maybe it's just your personal taste not accepting it then? AJFA is a Thrash masterpiece that's obvious, but maybe they didn't want to keep going with that kind of genre? Maybe they wanted to evolve and do something new for themselves and hopefully their fans would hold on to them (which many did, and many didn't.)

I loved Dead Magnetic aside from Hetfield's lyrics being a bit simplistic and boring at times.

I'm pretty sure they didn't want to do alienate them.

  • @Avzzor That's all you can expect to accomplish though when you completely throw the book out the window when it comes to song structuring and writing.

Like I said before, I'm all for creative freedom, but you have to keep it within certain parameters. You HAVE to cater to the people that gave you the ability to do what you do for a living. Without the fans, musicians wouldn't be able to create.

I'm not saying Metallica can't evolve, but you can't take the train that far off the tracks.

  • @monox2k They still did, they are still metal, they still have the thrash influence left in them. Maybe it's not as clear or as fast, but it's still there and easy to hear (if you look past Load and ReLoad.)

  • @monox2k Monox2k, there are musicians who work secondary jobs and create music. It's not that musicians can't create music without fans (because that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard), it's just they can't live comfortably without them. Metallica likes money and they like to live comfortably. Does that mean they can't evolve?....Well, not unless they began to care more about evolving their music and less about milking money from the ever-so-important 'fans'

  • @t1337Dude I didn't mean it's not possible to create music without fans - I've been making music and not profiting for years - but we're talking about popular artists here, so the phrase definitely applies.

All I'm saying is that it's hard to respect guys who have the ability to play/write complex, structured songs that they themselves are obviously into - they basically co invented the thrash genre - yet dumb it down purposefully for monetary gain.

  • @Avzzor Dave on drop tuning: (paraphrased) "People do that a lot these days because they can't play in normal tuning."

I think there is a lot of validity to that statement.

If you listened to Korn or Limp Bizkit playing in standard tunings, it would sound awful and unbelievably cliche, because thousands of guitarists had played two note riffs in standard E, but A was uncharted territory.

Anyone who can write relevant riffs in E these days deserves big props in my book. Mustaine included.

  • I'll never understand why they felt the need for double kick in this vid but glad they dropped it for the actual song. They shouldve asked Lars how many kicks it is, he wouldve been like....uurrrrrrr

  • kirk sucks

  • @isaimcbreinguitar you suck

  • @a7xfan1345 Admit it... Kirk Hammet sucks, it's all!

  • @isaimcbreinguitar then why is he the #11 the top 100 metal guitarists

  • @a7xfan1345 OK, he doesn't deserve that place... He should be at the 100th+ ... The reason is the commercialism, advertising... is the same reason why you have this image of MW3... being that all the call of duty are the same thing... I pity you, I guess these guys are the new generation ... horrible... and another thing to know that Kirk Hammet is awful on guitar, you learn to play one and then say ... =)

  • @isaimcbreinguitar i already play guitar

  • @a7xfan1345 because he's in the biggest and most commercial metal band of all time. Doesn't make him good though

  • @Decrypted33 then would you say Joey Jordison is better than kirk?

  • @isaimcbreinguitar damn right

  • is james playing a 7 string O_O

  • @pikabullet Yeah, he used a 7-string on the recordings for St anger, but live he just used a 6 string.

  • @MrGeorgeSears

    I was kidding :)

Of course, but Kirk > Dave :(

    Take care

  • "holy shit!!" come on kirk! you solo in "one" is holy shit and other stuff you have done is "holy shit", but that freaking riff? you must be kidding me.

  • Does anyone know what tuning James has on his 7-string in this video?

  • lol i like how in the final song they made the riff easier

  • parararararara parararararara parararararara

  • "This is your guitar player of the year right here"

  • that deserves a whole lot of gunny sgt hartman lines XD

  • Delete this shit :(

Kirk is a great guitarist :)

    Do you prefer Dave ?

    Kirk must teach him :)

  • @Mr1Luciano kirk teaching dave? lol i was having such a bad day. thanks for cheering me up :)

  • @kungfudragon99

    Yeah :)

    Don't try to be a big Fan-boy :(

    Take care :)

  • @Mr1Luciano Hahaha, good one.

  • @MrGeorgeSears

    Of course :)

    Are you a Fan-boy ?

    Very Lol

  • @Mr1Luciano What's a "fanboy"? I didn't just wake up one day and said: "Oh! I'm gonna start listening to Megadeth and Metallica for no apparent reason!"

I like both. Dave and Kirk are both good guitarists. No one needs to "teach" anyone. Can't we just leave it at that?

  • Lars thinking at 1:03 = ''We must kept Dave...''

  • seriously kirk?....

  • is it me or did any one noticed the pink marshall head behind kirk from 0:05-1:57

  • tabs?

  • Hetfield is awesome

  • 1:50 Priceless:D

  • He is still more talented and less of a douche than lars!!

  • This again proves that James has always been the mastermind and the core of Metallica

  • it's always harder to learn another persons riff, you're trying to emulate the sound and feel ANOTHER person created, that's tough, even for the simplest of riffs

  • Looks like they are rushing. I figured out more complex riffs by ear while the lead guitarist was explaing it to the rythmn guitarist. Either this or Kirk Hammet isn't the brightest rythmn guitarist.

  • ...I learned how to play the riff from this ._.

  • this is what happens when metallica gets out of their comfort zone lol

  • Well lets see, Lars sucks, Bob sucks, so I guess they can both STFU

  • that riff seems pretty easy to me. :S

  • The god that failed!!!!

  • Lars said "Come on man!" I think he can shut the fuck up he can't even play his own songs anymore like he used to play.

  • what song were they playing

  • @Astr0FayB0y some kind of monster from st.anger

  • shame on all who think HAMMETT is a HERO

  • @stillAfreak2008 He's a lead guitarist. He's more equipped to throw out a ripping solo than a crushing riff.

  • 'HOLY SHIT' haha !

  • wait...is that a pink marshall behind kirk?

  • Lars is such an asshole, Playing guitar is not always the easiest thing to do.

Good one on James for being so patient.

  • they did chanhe the rif course kirk did´t get it XD

  • 1:03 dady im boring

  • LOLOLOLOL WHEN HE SAYS "HOLY SHIT"
