Yeah, Mikael is only serious when he's writing the music. He likes to joke around with audiences at concerts, there's videos all over Youtube of him messing around.
Except that the "satanistic" part of Stairway to Heaven was found by some religious freaks, and that's what Åkerfeldt is making fun of in this song and By the Pain I See in Others :)
It's pretty much impossible to hear the message in Stairway without knowing what to listen for. Here it is easy. And it is definetly impossible to make a backwards message without doing like Opeth.
it wouldn't be hard to voice a backwards message. like if you want it to say, "hail satan" just record that, play it backwards and listen to it a couple times, just to hear what it sounds like. it will probably sound something like "nice leah". so just say "nice leah" on the real recording, and if anyone happens to play it backward, they'll hear an intentional subliminal message.
You really think so? I'm not so sure. Spoken sound isn't behaving exactly the same when you play it backwards as it normally do, so even if you do as you say I guess it would be very difficult to hear anything.
And about Stairway to Heaven; the "message" is much longer than just "Hail Satan". So even if your method works, it would be damn tricky to make lyrics out of the backwards message.
good point. it would be difficult, and hit or miss, but i'm sure it's possible. tho i agree robert plant didn't do any of that for Stairway. you can interpret messages out of any song. case in point: search "metallica one backwards" in youtube. i wrote the entire song backwards. it's mostly b.s., but pretty funny.
And you demonstrate THE argument against bacwards messages: That it simply is a matter of beeing told what to listen for. I heard the first part without looking at the lyrics, and I had no idea at all what he said. No problems hearing what he sang in the other part, while reading the lyrics.
not "my sweet satan", it's "hi sweet satan"

Of course it's a joke, Akerfeldt announced it a year ago. He's a joker.
