There is an extended version of this sound bye from Kurt where he said that though he questioned her motived with punk rock, Madonna did originate from New York and therefore must've seen some of the punk scene going on. ANd he also praised her for bringing elements of gay culture to the mainstream and for being a strong female in the public eye. His comments were edited here to fit with theeditor's tone.
no she was in a stupid breakfast club and thats lame i never knew her to understand punk rock, she chose to ignore it i wrote that just as kurt said it, serendipity i love him, he was so fucking sweet you know,
@TheSolitaryHeart So if mudonna's lame gospel music is "staying power" then i'm quite glad the go gos never went that lame ass boring route. Another thing, they were the first all girl band to write their own songs and play their own instruments. MUDonna always had others write the music. HA HA HA HA

in the words of johh lydon- "boring gospel music" when discussing the like a prayer vid.
@TheNewMusicNetwork "MUDonna always had others write the music." No she has written or cowritten most of her work with a few exceptions. Most of Belinda's hits have been written by other people actually. "lame ass" Is that as far as your vocabulary extends? "boring gospel music" Most people tend to disagree with that statement. "fhe go gos were still playing live to big crowds" But they're not packing out stadiums or setting world records are they. Oh dear, case reopened, yet again.
@TheSolitaryHeart eh NO you're just suffering from oilgophrenia and extreme mental retardation so you lack the proper mental acuity for any meaningful discussion, STUPID.
@TheSolitaryHeart hmm that's interesting that you bring up STAYING POWER when all that means in this case is MUDonna doing retarded songs +gospel music in 87'. doesn't get any lamer than that.
Meanwhile in 87' belinda wrote 3 top ten songs that had an alternative edge to them.
@TheNewMusicNetwork Case reopend. Oh look another rock "snob" trying bash people over the head with their opinions. Madonna lasted while the Go Go's didn't. Belinda Carlisle didn't have the staying power of Madonna so guess who wins.
@martijntjah whatever , he should have done his homework , madonna started as a punk rock singer, then realised she wasn't hitting the fame, then she decided to go global.
True, Madonna might not be into punk-rock as a musical GENRE, but truth be told, in terms of ATTITUDE, REBELLIOUSNESS, BALLS and strength as a subversive artist, Madonna is MORE PUNK RUNK than MOST PUNK ROCK musicians.
People might look down on pop and elevates more specialized genres supposedly as testament to their SUPERIOR TASTE but.. ugh, that's just so much PRETENTIOUSNESS I want to VOMIT.
Madonna made no bones as to who she is but she ends up GREATER than ANYBODY save the Beatles.
lol, it's sooooo funny how kurt is dismissing madonna as someone who is "cashing in" on the pop wave, when really that is ALL of music these days. madonna wasn't even half as bad as the shit now
for starters he sounds high as kite, b) he wasn't this great expert on music..it was his own misery that made people put him in a pedestal...to me he's no more talented than any alternative band singer at the time.....it was the fact that A) he was miserable anb B) he suicided that made him this "great" on people's regard I bet that if he was still alive he wouldn't be 1/10th of relevant that he is to people now.
He sounds sober, but his voice sounds shot. Maybe from screaming at all his shows?
He was relevent because he introduced a new style of rock to the mainstream, which isn't even necessarily good or bad, and he was one of the many who washed away the 80's cheesy rock n' roll image of gimmicks and exploiting women and being an ass. Plus, he really knew how to hone simplicity into something really special.
This reminds me of a sort interview with Justin Bieber, interviewer asked what is hes "junkmusic" and he said Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, The Ramones. I mean that doesn't make any sence. He clearly performs popmusic and kinda tries to look like hip hop artist and seeing climpses of interviews he seems very arrogant and not the kind of person that would listened to rock music. Kind of me makes me angry people like these, they just want to cool and try to be something they are not.
I absolutely agree with him, she did think that back then, she was still in her Material girl phase, but she matured and made way better music later on... Her music is not degrading, like most of the pop we have. Think about the development of women`s roles in our society and the pop culture`s influence on ppl`s perspective, and about Madonna`s role in it. He got it, 99% of her music is not about sex. Peace.
I'm a crazy Nirvana/KC fan & a heavy Madonna fan. I have studied both of their careers intensively. Though Kurt was a bit misinformed about Madonna's early, pre-fame "punk" roots, what he's essentially saying is right. If Madonna were a true punk rocker, or at least a punk admirer, she would've been advocating punk/underground/grunge music long before it was 'popular'. What a coincidence that she signs a seattle grunge band for HER record label at the height of the grunge movement. Not sincere.
Interesting video. Madonna was in punk New Wave-ish band, it has a Pretenders vibe to it. I believe he (Cobain) was right in some parts, but overall he was talking about Madonna as most avowed "punk" rockers would-- he kind of dismissed her. Madonna was mad cool in the early eighties and she knew about Iggy Pop and the Stooges, she campaigned for their induction into the Rock Hall of Fame I believe. Interesting video, but he was wrong about Madonna.

we can't compare madonna and nirvana. they are two simply different things. i give credits to nirvana and i give credits to madonna. both are true artists. then was when really good music took over the world, unlike today that everything is so so average!
'How superficial are consumers and all that?" Why don't interviewers ask those types of questions now a days? today there like who are you dating? Did you really do this with that person? It's questions that are nobody's business or just plain stupid. But that just show's how much dumber the entertainment industry has gotten over the years I guess.
Ok guys, I gotta correct teh Kurdtz here...Madonnna was heavily into Punk and the New Wave scene during 1978-1982 (before she got famous for anything). Check out her old band EMMY("Laugh To Keep From Crying" & "Drowning"). She'd play guitar & sometimes drums until they bored here to death, so she left the band & went solo Lol!
Anyway, I'll excuse Kurt's ignorance here. So, with that said...I just wanted to let everyone know that he couldn't be further from the truth in this video clip.
@CherishHamilton Yeah, she was in a punk band for a while. Check out "on the ground" by Madonna or Emmy or something, it's on youtube. Good or bad - it's punk rock.
@helloolleh555 he seems to think that she doesn't know punk rock, but she's probably one of the few solo artists in pop music that has a whole history of punk/rock before she was even famous.. that's all i'm saying.
@kurtcobainluver27 Funny you should say that, but actually what this interview shows is that despite their differences artistically Kurt Cobain had a lot of respect for Madonna. That's the difference between Madonna and people who are wrongly compared to her like Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and all the other manufactured pop tarts. It's jut fans like you that disrespect her.
@TheSolitaryHeart I didn't mean to be disrespectful about her but I'm just saying, Pop music is just waaaay to overrated in today's society...I'm sorry if that kind of upset you, I don't mean to insult Madonna, I just think that Rock music (Nirvana esp.) is better than Madonna or any other music artits but again that's just in my opinion...

She dated the artist/poet Jean-Michel Basquiat, who was the frontman for a weird experimental noise band called Gray.
I think that's the closest she ever came to being a "punk rocker" though. I doubt she was ever very passionate about that kind of music.
This is unrelated but; like Kurt, Jean-Michel also died at 27 years old and was really into heroin. That drug has ruined so many incredible artists.
