I'd say like 25-30% of AA's look pure African, 35-40% look mostly West African with a slight bit of admixture, while 30-25% of AA's look more heavilty mixed.
I don't think Lil Wayne, Omarion, Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Ice Cube, Keri Hilson, Meagan Good, Queen Latifah would fit in West Africa except for Cape Verde. And most AA's look like them.
Denzel Washington played a South African( I know it's not West Africa but still) in a movie and fit right in. Lil' Wayne could have fit in with certain ethnicities if he had cut his hair and changed clothing style. The same goes even for Queen Latifah( especially with igbo). I read somewhere that at least 30 % of AA are of igbo ancestry. As you mentioned yourself they are known for their often light complexion. This may indicate that AA's aren't as mixed as many believe.
Most AA's aren't as heavily mixed like say Dominicans and Puerto Ricans. But most AA's aren't as African as Haitians or Jamaicans, as a whole the AA group is inbetween those two extremes. The average AA is 20-25% genetically mixed, which means one could just look like a watered down West African, while the other could look more mixed. In AA familes, the features range alot and someone who looks like Beyonce could be a sister to someone who looks like Wesley Snipes.
I see now that my perception of you AA's may have been a little distorted by the fact that I mostly encountered those living in the rural south. But I find it hard to believe that someone like Wesley Snipes could have a Beyonce looking sister. Beyonce has a creole mother and is probably around 40 % white. Wesley on the other hand could pass easily in any West African country. He can't possibly be more than 5-10 % mixed.
Those two could easily be brother and sister. The thing about the 20% admixture is, there is a 8/10 chance one child could look like Wesley Snipes, and there is a 2/10 chance the other child could look like Beyonce. This is common in AA families where the Euro and African genes recombine and manifest in different ways.
The documentary African American Lives proved that people like Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey have far less admixture than what you claim to be the average for AA's. Whoopi had only 8 % non African genes. Oprah had 11 %. And then you have TD Jakes who was shown to have no discernible non African ancestry. Wesley Snipes doesn't look any less African than these people.

There are dark skin people who have white DNA you don't have to be only light to be mixed. Also I am Liberian West African born in America and people say that I look like an African-American eventhough I am. Also my parents are from Liberia and other families who are dark brown- Caramel. In addition I have family who are beige color and yellow from Africa and some who are mixed. No matter what complexion you are you can tell if a person is mixed by their features.
Poeple need to understand, its not how dark or light u are that determines if your mixed, its ur dna and blood history. I'd say like 25-30% of AA's look pure African, 35-40% look mostly West African with a slight bit of admixture, while 30-25% of AA's look more heavilty mixed.
I don't think Lil Wayne, Omarion, Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Ice Cube, Keri Hilson, Meagan Good, Queen Latifah would fit in West Africa except for Cape Verde. And most AA's look like them.

Denzel Washington played a South African( I know it's not West Africa but still) in a movie and fit right in. Lil' Wayne could have fit in with certain ethnicities if he had cut his hair and changed clothing style. The same goes even for Queen Latifah( especially with igbo). I read somewhere that at least 30 % of AA are of igbo ancestry. As you mentioned yourself they are known for their often light complexion. This may indicate that AA's aren't as mixed as many believe.

Most AA's aren't as heavily mixed like say Dominicans and Puerto Ricans. But most AA's aren't as African as Haitians or Jamaicans, as a whole the AA group is inbetween those two extremes. The average AA is 20-25% genetically mixed, which means one could just look like a watered down West African, while the other could look more mixed. In AA familes, the features range alot and someone who looks like Beyonce could be a sister to someone who looks like Wesley Snipes.

I see now that my perception of you AA's may have been a little distorted by the fact that I mostly encountered those living in the rural south. But I find it hard to believe that someone like Wesley Snipes could have a Beyonce looking sister. Beyonce has a creole mother and is probably around 40 % white. Wesley on the other hand could pass easily in any West African country. He can't possibly be more than 5-10 % mixed.

Whoopi had only 8 % non African genes. Oprah had 11 %. And then you have TD Jakes who was shown to have no discernible non African ancestry. But I still don't think any local would be staring at an AA( especially if they didn't know the nationality of the AA) and be thinking " he or she must be a mixture of igbo and Yoruba etc." I'm genetically fully Ghanian and I know that I wouldn't. Of course I can only speak for the areas I saw. I can imagine that there are regional differences when it comes to levels of white admixture in AA's. The only area I saw which can really match your description of AA's is N. Orleans. But in the rural areas of South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama 8/10ths of the people wouldn't stand out at all in west africa. BTW the AA couple who went to Ghana were obviously quite mixed. Many other AA's would not have received stares.

Maybe there are some regional differences, but I went to New York, DC and all over the south. The majority of the people I saw there wouldn't stand out in West Africa. You must remember that there are huge differences in appearance when it comes to indigenous Africans too. We also come in many shades and features. When I was a boy 1950's I was saying some ugly things about black people. My aunt told me I shouldn't talk that way because everyone has a drop of nigger blood in them. My dad's father was mixed races, my grandfather's father was Irish and native American . His mom was native American and his was Irish. He was great grandpa. There are more factors that makes up one's complexion..although you may have some points, it's not the full truth...I lived the Caribbean and i was really dark. I move to the US and im lighter even in summer. Environment and exposure to the sun 365days is just one factor.

South America reversed the "one drop" rule. You can run into charcoal black people in some South American countries who will tell you they are "white" --- SWEAR they are not black, because of this.

There is some truth to what he is saying... the term he uses "MotherF*cker" did originate during slavery. But the involuntary race mixing also happened in the Caribbean during the middle passage, and in South America as well. The "one drop" rule made it legal to be called black with minor african DNA.. Why 30% of people in the US who think they're white also have African DNA (from folks "passing" and moving away when they looked white enough). They weren't telling about their blackness.

I'm originally from the northeastern United States. After living for a decade in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands people who knew me don't recognize me because I became so dark from the sun.... And when I go back to the mainland and run into people who met me in St. Thomas, many have told others that it can't be me because I appear too light skinnned... Also I am Liberian West African born in America and people say that I look like an African-American eventhough I am. Also my parents are from Liberia and other families who are dark brown- Caramel. In addition I have family who are beige color and yellow from Africa and some who are mixed. No matter what complexion you are you can tell if a person is mixed by their features.
