what makes it pointless? more frets equals more high end flexibility without sacrificing the low end, an example would be ultra high notes that you would normally have to bend to get at the 22nd or 24th you can now fret normally and bend to get even higher! (or if you have a trem you can go really insane).

The more notes your instrument can produce without techniques, the more you can produce when you apply such techniques creating a more varied sound.

@8stringerr a 707 is a good idea becuase theres more chunk in it than an 81-7 cos its essentially a 7 string 85 and in the bridge would give you chunkier sound than an 81

@DVpk47 Essentialy an 85-7 , for all practical purposes maybe....but no it is a cross between the 85 and 81 and then add on that its a 7 string pickup even more altering if it were an 85-7 it would just over the line boomy, and I agree the 707 has perceivably more girth in mid and low mid and mid low and on the low end making a very jazzy pickup- I use it in my jazz metal tones.
