  • babe hit his homers in parks that were 460 feet or 480 feet to the fence ...he hit his homers in the "dead" ball era no technological rubber core crap or whatever ..also for the first 5 years of his career he was a pitcher..if he hit his whole career he could of hit 900...950 homers

  • yeah i agree the best baseball player there is

  • god bless Babe Ruth. Screw the red sox. Yankees for life :)

  • Just saw the movie, The Babe...had to see what this special is all about.

  • @Saberq1 not without the help of steroids. Bonds will never be the best in a lot of people's eyes

  • How is Ruth not #1 ??/ He is still being talked about 60+ yrs after his death, and greater than life figure before TV & media outlets... He simply saved baseball.. It took Aaron over 4,000 more AB to hit a mere 41 more HR's, Bonds 1,000 more AB to hit 48 more... enuff said...

  • @Mastophales You are right on. You are right

  • @Mastophales so what Bonds is still the fucking best

  • I will give anyone the arguement that Willie Mays, even Barry Bods, were better postion players...Although NOT better power hitters...

What sets Ruth apart from all of those players was that he was almost as good a pitcher as he was a hitter!!!His pitching performance in the 1916? World series is one for the ages!!!

The only reason he ended up playing right field was because of the prodigious nature of his bat.Other than that,he may have ended up one of the greatest pitchers of all time...

  • @NWpowerhouse85 What about the larger dimensions of the fields and the smaller sizes of gloves? The 46 oz bats! Or that the man hit more homeruns in 1920 than all but one team in the majors? I think you may know less about baseball than you do about the demographics of the all time greats!! If you really want to know...it's the Latinos that have mastered the sport over any other ethnic group...and not because of genetics but because it is played all year round in their native countries!!

  • @NWpowerhouse85 Your analysis is not only inaccurate,it's ignorant! Also...where's your proof that fastballs were only 80 MPH? It is said that Bob Feller broke 100 MPH as did Walter Johnson, just to name two!! You forget to mention that spiballs, shine balls, scuffed balls all were permitted! They used to have to return the ball from the stands back to the feild and many times use the same ball for 9 innings thus softening it up so as not being able to hit it as far!

  • does anyone know what was the average fastball back then????not sayin babe ruth couldn't hit a fastball from now a days pitchers...just wanted to know

  • i wanna know who is the one douchebag who disliked this video

  • @azimmerman9 Barry Bonds!!!

  • @josifus77 he cheated with steriods, babe ruth nor hank aaron used drugs. he doesn't deserve that record or anything

  • @Roxy11121 very true. i'm glad to know someone who has a sense of history about the game as well!!

  • @josifus77 thanks

  • Thank you for that enlightening, polite comment, and for reminding me why I generally don't bother to comment on chats or reply to them.

  • I appreciate the remark.GNigger

  • babe!!

  • When the Babe used to play baseball it was basically the same as it is today. The major difference was that fences were A LOT FARTHER than nowdays. The competition was extreme due to the fact that baseball was the only major sport around. Although blacks were not allowed to play with whites there were many hispanics, mostly Cubans, who did play with the Babe and, WHAT?

  • He should be ranked # 1

  • who calls this fat ass an athlete lol

  • @Ezema25 me

  • thomasrobertbarr

    You are a dunce,sir.

Ruth has obvious Alpine and Nordic ancestry, not chimp genes.

  • @HowBrownPhiladelphia You sir are an obvious bafoon

  • babe ruth, michael jordan and ali is #1 athlete

  • bullshit tris speaker and joe jackson were hitting doubles and triples to 4560 foot alleyways infield hits my ass

  • @deltapunk21 So true..but he meant that, people played small ball, as in, bunting, singles, stealing, sacrifice plays and such

  • greatest athlete ever. he should be #1.

  • Incredible footage at 3:46 I have never seen before. Ruth batting vs lefthander with men on filmed from CF. The pitcher throws a fastball down and in and it disappears over the fence. Eighty years ago could have been yesterday - timeless. A real treat to see the Babe in action.

  • Babe should be #1... He saved baseball, and he is still popular today, the name is still world known 60+ yrs later, and at a time when there was no TV,media, communications like today... Today it is "Who's the latest, not the greatest" Truly the Zeus of sports...

  • the guy had a era as a pitcher less then 2.00 here

  • To say Babe Ruth was/is the greatest Baseball player in history is a little extreme because players today are great athletes. However I will say that no other athlete in any sport, has had the same impacted on his sport like Babe Ruth. He was almost God like. It was almost like if you never saw him in person, you'd think he wasn't real. Babe Ruth is King of all Kings.

  • When you really look at that old film of Babe, one can see the quick power in his swing. Those old films don't do his strength and talent justice.

  • with japs exproting themselves over and latin dudes from dominican republic and etc. the game is not as watered down plus 300 mil AMericans vs. 150 at the time etc. Its not as watered down.

  • Ruth not being #1 is a crime. It's a product of people having no concept of the past. His numbers are unmatched. His impact is unmatched. His legend is unmatched. The closest thing to a God the sports world has ever seen.

Babe Ruth is simply in a class of his own.

  • i prefer having sex with japanese high school girls

  • man, i love america and this type of history

  • it says it was ranked number 2 of all time..who wasthanks red sox for babe ..lol stupid red sox

  • I wish Babe Ruth could come back, if only for one Home Run Derby.

Let Barry and A-Rod and McGwire and Sosa and all the rest have there steroids.

The Babe would still hit more homers... and be far more beloved.

Babe Ruth isn't just a baseball player- he is an American HERO, he and Jackie Robinson, those two just transcend baseball...

(Of course, to be fair to the Babe, if he WERE to come back, first on the list would have to be a great big beer and a nice plump hot dog- RUTH's fuel.)

  • the babe wish he come back

  • When I was 9 my dad would sneak me out of bed at midnight when my mom fell asleep so we could watch this series when it came on at midnight every friday. We'd share a pot of coffee so I could stay awake untill it was over since they played two in a row and went untill two in the morning.

I have great, great memories of this series and it's such a joy to relive them.

  • wonder how many "home run hitters" could hit with the bat Ruth hit with, 44 ounces!

  • Ah, ignorance is bliss. There are about 400 players in MLB today that wouldn't have even made the big leagues in Babe's day . That's watered down.

  • @thomasrobertbarr

agreed. that's one thing people hate to remember about Babe Ruth. Say that to a BR fan and they will say fuck you in so many words. The Red Sox paid 51 million just to speak to Dice K. You don't have to get into the specilized relievers and stuff, just look at the races/ethnicities. Not to mention Babe was a descendant of a biracial mom and a white dad. As the one guy said., "Look at all the players from his generation...they all look alike...None of them look like him."

  • @thomasrobertbarr I hate to burst your bubble, but you have it in reverse..

  • @thomasrobertbarr I disagree. In Ruth's day, black people were not allowed to play. There were also no latino players in the big leagues. How could you say the players of that day were better than today when the best players weren't even allowed to play?

  • @cincycap blacks repesent 12-13% of the country so its not that signigant and no black werent allowed to play that a lie they were just mlb was segregated by the players union in 1890's and keot that way by culture pressure and custom not to menton the damn union for 60 years

  • @thomasrobertbarr

There are 3 times more people in the U.S. now than when Babe played. Not sure if you were aware of this, but only whites were allowed to play during the Babe's tenure. Today roughly 60% of MLB players are white, wonder how many great players the Babe never played against because of the color of their skin. Ignorance must be bliss for you because you post ignorant comments

  • @thomasrobertbarr I hope your joking players are far more athletic now than they were in the 1920's

  • Comment removed

  • @Mattraction513

you've got to be kidding me? players today aren't more athletic, they're simply more doped up.

No one would have broken Roger Maris's single season home run record, nor would Bonds have broke Arron's all time homerun record without performance enhancing drugs. no player since Carl Yastrzemski has won the triple crown, and no pitcher in recent years has lasted as long as Satchel Paige did.

Most players today are pussies, compared to the legends who paved the road for them.

  • @thomasrobertbarr What are you, like, 97 years old? They didn't even allow black players to play back then, let alone latinos, asians, etc. Talk about watered down---that's eliminating the best players(black players are historically better than whites). The "fastballs" of the day were 80 mph. You're 100% incorrect, and you have it all reversed. If you took Babe Ruth in his best season, 1920, he would be lucky to slugg .500 today.

  • @thomasrobertbarr ....sorry,but the modern era is definitely better overall than babe ruths era...no doubt about it...but babe ruth would be great in any era

  • So I am sure by your logic that Hank Aaron is the true home run king and Roger Maris is the single season home run king right? Well Ruth hit his 714 Homers in 2503 games. Aaron hit his 755 in 3298. Ruth his his 60 in 151 games and Maris hit his in 161 games. The point is you can pout an asterix next to any player if you really want to be a dick and take away from their accomplishments. Also Ruth hit before the balls were juiced, while the mounds were higher, and when the equipment was shit.

  • @crj2727 Agreed, and there are so many other factors. Parks were huge - a sports statistition estimated that if Ruth played in todays average park he would have hit 1150 home runs. Also, any home run that hooked inside of the foul pole and landed foul afterwords was not counted as a home run. There are a plethora of other handicaps. And at the end of the day, hes still the only player in history to hit 60 in 154 without cheating (Maris didn't hit 60 in 154; Bonds, MacGuire and Sosa cheated.)

  • Thanks bud!

  • he saved baseball

  • How many Homeruns could he have hit had he not started out as a Pitcher? 900 Maybe? He outhit entire Baseball Teams.

  • It's awesome to see how good he was and compare him to all these chumps today who are hopped up on roids, Maguire may have hit more homeruns than ruth, but Ruth was infinitely better

  • Ruth hit for average, for power, to all fields and drove in runs. McGuire didn't do that. Ruth would also have gotten more than 3,000 hits if he had been an every day player and not a pitcher.

  • I agree, these guys today you cant even tell which one of them is a "clean" player and which one is on several different types of "supplements" and performance enhancing pills...its tragic though what happened to Ruth at the end of his life though,

  • Yes, it is sad what happened to Ruth the last few years of his career and the rest of his life.

  • Babe Ruth is the man
