This is Yoshimasa Matsuda. He is very well known on Okinawa. HE is my Sensai's Sensai. He is amazing and is a very nice man. I was recently at his 73rd birthday party.
Ooo, I don't practice Karate, but my eyes can see his body mechanics are really excellent. He has very little neck jerk in his movements, keeping his intent and senses connected even at the point of power... and he has excelent hip/pelvic/dantien and grounding power. Great mechanics. He's really good.
I'll ask some of my karate friends some of whom have beeing doing karate for a very long time. i think it has to do with rooting. similar to how the goju/uechi guys tilt their hips in sanchin. if you get into a medium width horse stance, bend your knees, feel the pressure on your legs and feet...not tilt your hip up like that and note the increased pressure.
Okay, when you go through your Katas, you are supposed to do it as though you are in an actual fight. Meaning your movements should be fast, and hard. Not slow like this guys. Otherwise you get in this habit, then you will get in a real fight, panic, and do it just like that.
you are supposed to know that he is doing the Kusanku dai in a training video.this is not a full speed kata. yet, a kata in full speed is still slower than a waza practice.
mate, the energy this guy is producing would be amazing. No doubt he has done it countless times. To see his techniques displayed is great. anyone can smash out a kata.
had you paid attention to the follow on kata, you would see the speed and power...his demonstration of kusanku was for the purpose of showing proper form
Stop making negative comments towards other martial artists. We are all built differently and cannot make all movements the same as everyone else. There are GOING to be differences in every style and every person. The main part of training is to be effective, not pretty.

Do you know of any relations to an earlier style called Soryu Karate? Michio Koyasu was under Kenken Toyama. Any idea of the roots?

Please post more details on the performer and on the katas. His focus is amazing. What's the bunkai for the hip movements of the last kata?

What's the bullshit with that exaggerated hip movement in neko ashi dachi with mawashi uke? Nice kime otherwise, stability so-so at times.

este realmente conhece o Karate e Kata. feliz o aluno que pode ter um professor deste nivel.
sou faixa preta em karatê com a graduação 3º dan e sei valorizar que realmente treina, e este é um que treina.

besides some minor differences, it quite resembles the shotokan kanku-dai kata.

I'm back. Yes it does resemble kanku-dai as you say (said 11 monthes ago). I was thinking of his other kata in this video.
