  • I wish the Southmen were on Spotify!

  • i think JD is too soft. listen to ANY song wit Tim in it. he has POWER!! Tim can drop of in his low notes no problem but JD had 2 ahhhhhhh down into it if you get wat i mean. JD low but Tim is THE BEST!!!! no offence:)

  • such a clear and projected bass. he is very controled and it is easy to see why he will always be concidered one of the best basses to ever rock the rafters

  • 0:58 :D

  • Do you like this benjamin? I do!

  • watch?v=vw-Swj-oYVY&feature=related JD is much smoother.

  • Seems to me that we need to take into account what a song needs. Consider the performance of Sweet Sweet Spirit by the Imperials. The bass is Armond Morales. He is very smooth, and blends in well with the other singers. I don't think anyone can do better. On the other hand, some songs require lower range, in which case I like either Tim Riley or JD. On the other hand, the solo part in Treasures Unseen was done very well by Gene McDonald of The Florida Boys.

  • tim riley and jay parrack made the most awsome music. one of the worlds best bass singer teamed with one of the best tenors.

  • @jqtomlin correction... not ONE of the world best bass singers... THE best!!!!!!!

  • That's bass singing there..... my friends...

  • Haha, it's like Chesnokov meets Jesus. Love it! :D

  • Yes-Sir! He is one of the best. Found another one of the best I had never heard of. Check out The Rangers Lonesome Road & Jericho Road if you like the true bass singers like Tim. Guess my top five in no certain order would be Tim, JD, George Younce, Charlie Gilmore & The Chief. I have been a fan of Southern Gospel for 40 years & had never heard the Bass Singer(Charlie Gilmore) with The Rangers but I really think you will enjoy the video. The Quartet is one of the best I never heard of.

  • he was a genius for real...massive bass

  • Real bass singers can sing low notes without a hot mike. This guy is for real. If you cant be heard without a hot mike you are not a real Bass singer only a phoney BIG CHIEF, TIM RILEY, GENE MACDONNALD, HARROLD GILEY, RICHARD STERBAN, NIC VAL, ALL REAL BASS SINGERS

  • your forgetting george younce!!! and will adkins and jeff chapman and london parris and many more!

  • No, I could never forget George Younce or for that matter J.D Sumner, they were great !! But Tim Riley has a better range

and he remains clear no matter how low

    he is singing.

  • George Younce had a bigger range than Tim did. Tim is one of the best bass singers but George was THE best. And George is just as clear all the way down if not a little clearewr. I don't have anything against Tim though. He is amazing.

  • @dabeinman He may have been clearer, but NOBODY has the power that Tim has at any range of bass.

  • @BraveMan5555 Christian Davis, check him out.

  • My favorite Bass singer!!

  • There may be some bass singers that can go lower than Tim, but none have the

voice control and clarity that Tim has.

  • Yikes!!!..bet that place was shaking! He has a beard now eh??

  • I really don't know who's the best bass singer, but this man is one of the most tuned I've ever seen!

  • To the people who say he's the only American on par with the Russian Basso Profundos...this video is one big piece of proof...listen to this with a subwoofer and good speakers (or headphones with good bass response)...his voice is very rich with bass but still nice and clear...Tim is the best bass today. No doubt in my mind.

  • @GamingDrummer89 Well, I can easily hit these notes that Tim hits. I have been a semi professional singer all my life and I can tell you he is " alright". That is all. I can't understand why everyone thinks he is so good? George Younce was far better and pretty much as low. Many others also. He is good but come on. Nothing great. I could sing like that since I was 18.

  • @bottomfeeder73 I checked your channel, and I was impressed with your voice. Kinda reminded me of Josh Turner (who has sung down to G1 before). Nice work!

As for why so many people think Tim is great. He's got distinct clarity and balance to his voice and more importantly he's got power in his voice. The only two basses that have won more awards than him (according to the southern gospel history website) are George Younce and Mike Holcomb. (continued in next post)

  • @GamingDrummer89 George Younce is definitely, IMO, the closest thing to Tim Riley, as he also has a clear, powerful, balanced voice, so you are right to bring him up.

One thing I gotta say, however, is that with all due respect of course, that last sentence you put is a massive claim. I'm not doubting you, but I would have thought you would put up a video of you hitting those notes before saying that you are as good as Tim. (continued in one more post, lol).

  • @GamingDrummer89 I see that you definitely possess a nice low range. But keep in mind that even though you aren't a big fan of Tim, most of his listeners are. He's kind of an inspirational figure. And just to sympathize, I kinda see where you are coming from. I am not a big Mike Holcomb fan (I think his deeper notes sound forced), but many people are. It's all opinions, lol.

Hope there's no hard feelings. And you should cover some of Josh Turner's lower stuff. Keep it real!

  • @GamingDrummer89 Yeah, I probably came across a little arrogant. I should change my definition of myself to "amateur singer", lol. Tim Riley is a good bass and I have enjoyed Gold City over the years. George is still my fave though.;) I do cover Josh Turner. I think he has one of the smoothest low voices in music today.

I am not really good at posting videos, hence me only having one mediocre one up. But I will try and get some up of me singing bass.

    Peace to you.

  • Time is and forever will be the best to step foot on any stage!

  • I didnt recognize tim with the beard

  • im a bass singer with the Calvary's Harmony quartet and i get to sing in concert with these guys on june 5th! i cant wait to sing with one of my fav singers tim riley! hope he gives me some good pointers! this man is amazing! hope to hear him sing some low low notes!

  • I remember you. I met you at the Mississippi State Quartet Convention in 2008. I haven't heard you guys since then but I imagine that you've improved, like I said you would. :D If you don't remember me, I'm the bass singer with Heavenly Journey.

  • Tim Riley is still alive, if that is what you are trying to say.

  • the only american on par with the russians.

  • WOW Love his Bass!

  • wow i sing bass 2 but he is like bass 1000

  • and let me say the quality of his voice is probably better now than it ever has been.

  • aaron mccune aint got nothin on this guy. NOTHING!

  • Tim's also been singing bass since before Aacon McCune was even born.

  • There have been only a handful of bass singers that have een able to maintain depth and clarity after the age of 60 and Tim is one of them. This guy is incredible, made some of the most awesome gospel music EVER and is a gospel quartet ICON!!!

  • I also think London Parris would fit in this group.

  • he should get rid of the rest and go it alone i was blown away by this

  • All of you "I can blow this guy away" people should put up a link to your videos so we can all hear just how wonderful you really are!

  • Tim Riley Can comfortably sing down to an F1 on the piano. I Think that Tim could sing down to a double Low C in full chest voice. He is one of the best out there.

  • Which is how many notes lower than this? F, E, D, C?

I know for a fact he can hit the last note on the piano, but couldn't do it every night so he stopped at G1 so he could sound the same live as he did on the CD's.

  • The bottom note on the Piano is an A0. Awesome.

  • @BamaMTA04 From that G1, there is F1, E1, D1,C1(double low C), B0, and A0 which is the last note on the piano.

  • You have no faith young man. This guy posesses an incredible amount of talent.

  • I love how he pronounces "above" as "mmbove" :D

Also his G1 sounds great, no vocal fry here.

  • I think i can sing this song aswell

  • ok...now go and tell mommy to read u a bed time story...

  • well when you can grow a mustache you can go sing with a quartet too and prove it then.

  • i dont exactly not believe you and these guys are really condeming.

    you deserve a chance.

how about you make a quick little recording one night of how good you really are.

then all of youtube will be amazed

  • lets hear it big shot. make a video and post it.

  • Anyone who wants to hear more from this guy should check out some of Gold City Qt's older cds. Just google them....

  • holy shit, that chromatic thing at 1:07 made me die.

  • At 1:15 he sounds exactly like a C-130 taxiing on the flightline.

  • I love the end! I can't stop listening to it!!!!!!!!!!

  • I know, I have watched this video a hundred times. He seems like such a nice unassuming guy too.

  • does the southmen have any recordings out or videos? maybe a website?

  • It kind of looks like the Audio Technica Pro 37 to me because it's kind of short. It looks a little shorter than the 4041, but it may be.

  • Is that a Audio Technica 4041 microphone he is using? does anyone know?

  • It looks like the Pro37 to me too. If you are trying to buy one, you might consider emailing Joe Brown with the Diplomats to see what it was - the Southmen used the Diplomats' set up that night.

  • Yes, definitely a Pro 37...I used to sing on one

  • JD Sumner once said that most basses lose some of their vocal ability in their 50's & beyond but he, Tim & George Younce were exceptions to that rule. In fact, George said he still had his voice but he couldn't "unload" it like he once could. I heard him at a Gaither performance about 6 months before God called him home & he could STILL go low ( just couldn't hold it as long ). I also heard Tim 2 months ago @ GC's homecoming & he's BETTER than ever, IMHO!! Check out some of the vids.

  • I got a couple of videos at the homecoming too. He was really good even if the subs weren't working when he was singing.

  • tim sounds alot like the rurrian basses too.

  • Ok, Ok. 1:12 into this video is officially the most impressive vocal achievement I've ever heard in my entire life!

  • He's the best I've ever heard. Getter than George or JD IMO. JD was lower and George was a better lead bass, but for a true quartet bass Tim is the best.

  • You recorded this right?

  • Who's asking? :)

    Yes I recorded it.

  • Hm, you'll have to excuse me for being a complete alcoholic (remember typing that in a 'drunken haze'), but I recall I was thinking "wow, that must have been an amazing experience listening to that live". Listened to a opera once ('the magic flute') and some of the guys wen't really low, but hey.. this IS low, they were 'castratos' compared to Tim!

  • Oh, and by they way, forgot to thank you for posting this on Youtube! Thank you :)

  • ..And exaclty (for a tonedeaf guy like me) how low is that note when he sing "cloud"? It "feels", to me, like some of the lowest notes on a piano?

  • It's a G1. 7 notes (I think) from the end of the piano

  • " Come on, Tim"

    "Thank Ye"

  • Sexy.

  • There are some rewards for being old

  • You are wrong. After a certain age, a man can no longer reach such low notes. This is born talent.

  • Sure at 85 when everything else fails. But at 65?!? I'm not arguing his talent. Tim is amazing! But listen to his earlier recordings vs now. He's fattened his low register dramatically!

  • Possibly that might be equipment and maybe some time off. I've never heard a sound system sound as good on bass singers as I did that night. Joe Brown with the Diplomats was tearing it up too. Tim has been this good since at least 92 though. He was good in the 80's but something got better around 90-91.

  • Para mim, Tim Riley supera todos...ele realmente é excepcional.

  • Excepcionalmente fabuloso!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tim Riley, el mejor bajo, después de J.D. Sunmer.

    un abrazo.

  • I think the Southmen get together once a year as a reunion concert & since Tim once sang bass for them ( pre-Gold City ) he's there. Lots of folks on here say he's hit lower notes "in his prime" but I've followed GC's music ministry for over 20 years & these notes are some of his best EVER, IMHO!!

Don't know if Steve Lacey still performs ( GREAT voice ) but I've heard Brian, Ivan & Mike do "When I Get Carried Away" using Keith Plott ( Brian's former bass singer ). They've still got it!!

  • I bet I've seen them 30 times and I never remember hearing him hit a G1 this full. Maybe it's because the background music wasn't as loud, but none the less, the chairs shook when he hit the G1. It was very good.

  • Hey BAMAMTA04! You seem to know A LOT about Tim Riley. I was just wondering if you know the lowest note he has ever hit or can hit. I know you said he only goes down to an F and someone said that he doesn't like to go any lower. But with a voice like that I'm sure he has experimented on how low he can go and I'm willing to bet he can go off the piano if not close to it. Thanks in advance!

  • The lowest he's ever hit in concert or on a recording is an F1. I have no doubt he can go off the piano but his exact words were "Why go lower than the F? Any lower and it's just noise. At an F it still sounds musical."

  • Bloody hell.

    Just.... wow.

    *gobsmacked*

  • i don't think he is dead, his son died in a car accident on the way to a recording studio, he played the drums. It was around the time that Anthony Burger passed away.

  • I can't find anything on Tim. I think you're right. I shot this video 2 months ago and there hasn't been any news since then.

  • They still have plans to get Tim, Mark, Jay, and Jon together for homecoming. I just got a GC newsletter this morning and there's nothing in there. That'd probably be Doug...died the January before Revival came out.

  • DID TIM DIE!?

  • Not that I know of. Did you hear something?

  • amazing

  • do they still tour and do thry have a web site Id like to see tim again. Its been at least 4 years since I seen him. I share his last name but im not related.

  • One one of the nights of GC's upcoming homecoming, Tim, Mark, Jay, and Jon are supposed to sing together.

  • What about Tim, Steve, Ivan and Brian? That would be worth ALOT of money to see again! :(

  • is tim wit them now??

  • is tim wit them now??

  • Whi are the guys he is with in this?

  • Thats the lowest i ever heard him go does anyone have one where he goes lower his bass voice is so clear and extinct when he gets down in the low notes you can still hear him which is rare for bass singers

  • That's a low G. He has gone to an F one time and qwertyjuan has it on his video. The very first song on the clip. However, he has told me that he doesn't like going lower than the G because anything else is just "noise". He thinks a G is low enough. I agree, it's way beyond the normal range.

  • the qwertyjuan video has a F#1 in the neginning, I´m still looking for that Tim Riley F1...

  • I grew up with Gold City. I was just a baby when the held me on stage during a concert...I have always considered them family..Tim's Voice always brought chills to me when he hits those low note i love this man..:-)

  • Fantastic, Anyone who doubts Tims ability to sing low needs to hear this. I have seen Gold City in concert a couple of times and Tim never seeces to amaze an audience. Please post more if you have them.
