love how he digs down he bends when he plays pops up thats inner enthusiasm wanting to just explode love it , its also him determining how exactly he wants to play it just before he does i hear bill plays it a bit differently all his tunes every time he plays not cookie cutter like which is fabulous.... long live jazz and bill frisell folk songs possibly the best jazz guitar cd ive ever heard...inner peace!!!!
Feeling and truth above all else - Bill Frisell communicates that to me with every note and his whole approach. When I feel myself slipping off course, second guessing my decisions, in whatever aspect of my life, I listen to Frisell speak his heart and I am right back on course. In my book a genius although he'd probably shy away from that statement. Sorry Bill!
@heartpath1 i like how you said that how you listen to bill and things have a way of settings themselves right again you must feel the same as i do then cause i hear a song like have a little faith and yes bye bye problems i hear you all the way long live jazz and bill frisell just saw him a few weeks ago in evanston, illinois it was fabulous.....first time and hopefully not my last
Love Frisell and all the guys in this group. Whoever's talking about Frisell "looking down" on anybody or anything has no clue. He's one of the people nominally in the jazz world that embraces more styles of music than anyone I can think of. If you think Frisell only composes and doesn't recompose (or jazz) his stuff, you're mistaken. Frisell is one of the most in the moment and deep in the music players you'll ever see/hear live. He looks like he has no clue where he is sometimes inside it
If Coltrane did a ballad, he didnt act like it was beneath him, just because it didnt have a ton of improvisation happening. Beautiful is beautiful, fun is fun. Can we get beyond bashing music, musicians, listeners, or critics -- even as a little joke -- it's no fun.

selling out? Im beginning to hate pat metheny, bill frisell, etc for their bad attitudes. Maybe I need to go back to John Coltrane, Wes Montgomery, etc because Im almost not able to stand the "too cool" jokey arrogance of these guys anymore. I guess that I like to hear people play* music, not compose* and perform* it (and put other people down).
I'm not sure you're correct re: bad attitude. Frisell has always had "big ears" and has heard the beauty in the simplest things and managed to mine them for deep beauty. He has been a fan of Hiatt for years, recording a LOT of his songs. I don't think he would do that if he were just having a joke at Hiatt's expense.
Have you ever played with or *even met* Frisell? He's just about the quietest, most humble guy you could possibly imagine, and he most certainly wouldn't be putting John Hiatt down. Remember the title of the album he first recorded this song? "Have a Little Faith". Yes, he named the whole record after it and it's a recording of everything from Ives to Madonna.
He most certainly does not think that this is beneath him. What's on earth is wrong with enjoying something when you play it?
great to see this again. saw it more than 10 years ago on dutch tv. there's also a medley, starting with "when you wish upon a star" solo. bathosue, if you have more, please share.
by the way, this quartet sucked at the beginning, in 1995, i saw them live then, but here they really "flow."
Hey guys. Don´t get me wrong. Bill always have been a great musician and guitarist but i like him more playing a Telecaster than Klein guitar or SG. Tele is just more raw and natural sounding and to Frisell´s approach fits better. At least IMHO
I agree with Micahb2 about the Klein electric guitar. That was a very nice sounding guitar that I wish he still played.
This is an interesting version of "Have A Little Faith In Me." A lot different than the version on his album "Have A Little Faith" where he played this song in trio format. He's always pushing himself in new directions and unusual instrumentation is all apart of that journey, beautiful music.
Very nice. I always liked the way he played that Klein guitar. He doen't seem to be in a wrestling match as much as he does with his current Telecaster-hybrid.
@Micahb2 I totally agree. That steinberger/klein has a modern rolled off sound that I really dig for him. When he moved to the Tele sound, it was coincident with his playing more country and conservative and he sorta lost me. I liked the beauty and then the "evil" he could get with that Klein with distortion. I wonder what pickups he had in it?
@brandobean I get what you're saying in terms of recordings/countryish, but live you never know. I heard him with his trio with Eyvand Kand and Rudy Royston last year and it was some of the most inventive exciting playing I've ever heard from him in 20+ yrs. He also played some completely incendiary huge stuff. More than anyone I know, live is the deal with Frisell. He makes good and sometimes great CDs, but he is totally alive when playing live. East/West is awesome as is the Live trio CD.

Frisell has been of fan of John Hiatt for many years. He even once said in an interview that Hiatt was one of his favorite guitarists.
