  • i can see how people have a problem with hippies, hell even why people dont like bums or homeless people, but what the hell is their problem with someone just wanting to capitalize on all that free good food just going to waste? seriously, if i wasnt the coward man-shell that i am, i would jump out of my Hyundai on the way home from work - suit, tie and all, every day, and dumpster dive the shit out of my local grocery store. why the hell should i pay hundreds for stuff i could find for free

  • KFC, Arby's, Carl's Jr./Hardees. and Papa John's, that's where the food is. Unbelievable, all the food I found at those places.

  • If you clean them, they're tastefull.

  • I go out diving most nights to get each days fresh produce.

  • I LOVE dumpster diving! This is awesome. So many good finds! You guys are wonderful!

  • Don't think that this is only about scrounging in dumpsters. Lots of people in our area have fruit trees and there is only one old woman who lives in the house. You can go there with a cart and a stick, ask to clear out her trees, and you can take it to a soup kitchen! Cities love this kind of thing because it keeps rats and possums from flourishing AND it feeds poor people. Do it!

  • I wouldn't have left one single piece.

  • Thank you so much for sharing your powerful message. I would love to become part of a solution to this problem but, and I'm sure I'm not the only one, I have no idea where to start. You have inspired one way I could begin. Imagine if it took on in mass and the government is forced to take notice... My innards scream for change! Go Freegan's go!

  • That's really shocking. The idea of 'dumpster diving' usually calls to mind dirty or half-rotten food. I had no idea so much perfectly good food is just being thrown away because it's just easier than dealing with it ethically.

Thanks for the video, you made me really think seriously about this issue. Take care, guys.

  • Amazing...

  • The only way to stop this epidemic is to STOP making food. JUST STOP. If you put 10 mice in a cage and put enough food in for twenty mice, then you WILL have 20 mice. Problem is there are so many fuckin people in this world now that there just isn't enough food, but somehow the food that is leftover gets trashed. Ever wonder why people starve in Africa? Or Gaza? Or right here in the U.S.? It's because food is factory pumped EVERY DAY. Want more people? Keep making food.

  • damn thats a motherload. God bless the freegans

  • This throwaway society we live in makes me very very sad. Don't stop what you are doing!

I don't have the courage to do what you do but I try & waste as little as possible. However my food has food miles & much of it is from developing countries - so basically I'm taking the food out of hungry mouths.

Trying my hand at growing in the small garden at our block of flats & also urban foraging bits here & there but wish I could do what you do to keep waste down & hop off the capitalist wheel a bit.

  • WOW I WANT TO DO THIS

  • Wasn't this call livig like a "HOBO" Living like a "BUM" is another word that comes to mind.

And you wanna live like this?

  • How about we change the world, and remove waste food, feed all and put money before people....well creaturebottomman...want to live like that?

You a stooge for the man are you?

    ..or just another FAT cat.

  • ?

    Whoa !

How about we just hunt, fish and grow our own food.

Sounds better than picking through the garbage.

And no. Not fat, Not a stooge...

Just stating my point of view.

    Okay?

  • i don't know why more of the stupid ass americans that i live with don't eat for free all of the time. so fuckin stupid. i don't understand how food becomes "poisoned" as soon as it hits the trash bin. they can't eat it unless it's fresh in a plastic bag and PAY for it. again, SO stupid. i eat like a king every other day on "poisoned" food hahahahaha I WIN AMERICA keep throwing it away...you and your throwaway lifestyles....BLEGHHHHHHHHH

  • What did the doggy get?? lol

  • To everyone on here that says that this is stealing or gross etc. you are extremely naive. A common example in the USA fois Panera Bread. My roommate works there and we take from what they would call trash. Bread is baked "fresh" every day and so as part of there policy any left over bread is donated and thrown out. After donations are made an average of 3 industrial size trash bags are thrown away every night with fresh baked bread, pastries, paninis, bagels. Again this is after donations.

  • Yikes! That's horrifying! There are people who BEG me for food every day. For a nation where about half of us are so fat we can't buy decent clothes, a LOT of people don't get enough to eat. Makes me sick.

Dumpster diving? Is that what detractors call it? How 'bout reclaiming perfectly good food that's about to be fed to seagulls and rats for no good reason?

  • They make it look is.. like living on a reality TV program.

I bet its not easy scrounging for food.

Don't believe me. Try it for a week. I bet you wouldn't last a day. Sure wastefulness is stupid and wrong. But instead of being a bum "Freegans" why not help those in need with the recycled food they find? yeah.. like the REAL homeless and those BEGGING for food. This is stupid because its selfish.

  • The food collected was distributed amongst those who needed it in our community.

  • Sadly large supermarket companies are claiming this "waste".

No, they are not giving it to the needy, they are turning it into a resource for sale to methane production plants.

    This has a dual purpose.

    1. They are now seen as "environmentally minded" while hiding their wastefulness.

    2. As a resourse it becomes a crime to collect this food, thus stopping the freegan problem .

Another case of money and profit over people.

  • @jfulbright exactly.. that food looked great.. so many people would be disgusted to see that food waste.. why is everyone making fun of these people.. the indians were eating raw food .. how is this any different>> you can see the veges and fruits are still healthy.. i eat stuff past shelf life all the time.. im not rich like most fat cats

  • @Schecter860 Hey how ya doin? I see you hopping around on the Freegan shows. If you go diving be sure to take a cane with a crook handle its great for pulling things toward you. Good luck man.

  • brill vid guys....

  • Im thinking of doing this, are groceries and health store the best place? I think it would be best to do it around 4-5 am ... too dangerous at midnight if you ask me

  • I am so going to become a freegan when I start college in 2 years I want to start now but my mom thinks freegans are nuts but I think their awsome.

  • That is amazing!

  • Dear Ms78 Butterfly,

If "the food is never that nice"...choose a different "supplier" :)

It was that nice, It wasnt "Overrated", and if the truth of that waste bothers you, motivating you to such a negative response, I would suggest that you are probably a stooge for the large companies that produce such waste.

How dare you accuse me of forging the details, you little shit. IT WAS EXACTLY THAT, EXCEPT THE MUSHROOMS...ALL CAME FROM 1 BIN IN 1 NIGHT...END OF STORY!

  • It varies what you find, often I find these freegan videos overrated. I never find this much food, so I wish people would tell us that! So don't think it's all going to be pretty and clean like that. Cause it usually isn't. I have been doing this for over a year, and the food never is that nice...

  • I see the truth in this! I am very low income since I am disabled and I am going to try doing this! Hell I basicly HAVE to try it or starve to death!

  • That $12 you would have spent would have been paying someones wages and maybe putting a roof over some child

  • o one is going to take your garbage you pussy.

"My garbage is my garbage".... Baby!

  • What's amazing to me is that people call them "trash eaters" and yet that's the cleanest pile of food I've ever seen, lol- it almost looks like a cornocopia of pristine veggies and fruit. Please have dumpsters like this here in NY where I live! They are NASTY, lol- everything's covered in slop...

  • But if you get the trash just when the stores are closing, particularly Au Bon Pain, you will LITERALLY be carrying 20 pounds just in one bag worth of Organic whole grain rounds of bread, just baked that day, croissants, rolls, any kind of bread you can imagine- that sold for $12 bucks for one boule if you had purchased it in the store 15 minutes before!

  • That $12 you would have spent would have been paying someones wages and maybe putting a roof over some child

  • How was I supposed to purchase it when it was sitting on the sidewalk in a pristine clear plastic bag? Oh, and fyi, it was Le Pain Quotidienne, not Au Bon Pain. I think the wages would still be paid to the employee, dude. Part of the guy's job is, ahhh... taking bread that doesn't sell... to the sidewalk.

  • I pulled up to a rfeally long dumpster once and it was full from one end to the other with FROZEN FOODS still frozen. I call for backup and it lasted us a long time.

  • Be careful some stores poison the food by pouring bleech and other stuff over it. I think this would make them liable for a law suit but careful anyway. Some losers dont care whom they hurt. I am happy to see this happening.

  • When I went on the run that is video'd here, most food was still wrapped.

Yes, I agree that poisoning the food could bring a law suit. It would be a benchmark case in regards to the whole issue of waste and what rights we have to be wasteful...and the recovery of waste.

poisoners of good food watch out!..lets make diving a right and lawful act of recovery.

  • I'd like to start a group who asks Grocery stores for their food waste for composting. This way both parties are knowingly on board reuse of the 'waste' . I'd assume some sort of waiver may need to be signed .

  • I used to do this way before it had a name. There is everything in the trash you can find inn a store only it is free. People looked at me bad back then now it has a name it is getting to be ok. I knew a man that taught me this that had like 4 freezers completely full of food he had found. If he found chicken he did what the stores do,he bleached it. I hate the waste from these places.

  • Also, I have about 60 big boxes full of everything you can think of from vitamins, scotch tape, wrapping paper, christmas cards, ornaments for every holiday, anything a pharmacy/store sells I have in my boxes. Saving until family or other people need these. Shampoos, conditioners, shavers, candy ...lots of candy, Everything. I've seen some people sell these same things at the Flea Market. I don't sell, I use and donate.

  • I'm on my daughter's account buy I have to comment. (CAN"T REMEMBER MY LOG IN AN PASSWORD). I would love to find dumpsters around here in TN that leave that much food for others to take. The only good place I have found is a dumpster from a Pharmacy (well known chain) That once left in one day , I Swear a TRUCK LOAD of ohoy chocolate chip cookies,oreos,chips,pretzels...ect.ect..... I SWEAR it took TWO truck loads to get this all home and we shared it with five families. These were all still good

  • Dear God, look at all that bread! Wasteful, wasteful, wasteful!

I work at Target and they're wasteful, too. If a guest decides they don't want a frozen item, we can't even go and put it back in the freezer. We have to throw it out. It's not even unfrozen by then! Argh!

And instead of donating furniture that can't be sold, it's destroyed.

I would get into freeganism but as it is now, I don't buy my own food in the first place. Still living with my parents and all.

  • eiree babylon!

  • I used to do that in New York for other things. I was going to school in Manhattan and the dorm was in a fairly wealthy (for ny) area and I would always go through the garbage and find tons of stuff. Even stores would throw away items that I guess they couldnt sell. The craziest thing to me was the thrift stores for charities they throw out the best stuff. Never really did it for food (except some bagels once) but I think I'm gonna start. The US probably wastes the most of any country!

  • totally love the caps!

  • Almost a year later, we 'dump-stars' are going strong! Still feeding our town and saving masses from becomming landfill! Heaps of food and we've gotten lawn mowers (still in the box) pressure cookers and stainless steel cookware, jogger pram, toys, feather pillows, blankets and feather doonas, a swag, leather work boots - the list goes on and on - ALL NEW - all going off to landfill now being used, much is donated to those in need (blankets/food). Such a great eco move for us... I do feel good!

  • Hey mate,

Glad you are keeping it going.

Good to see that the spoils are so well distributed amongst those who need it most.

I feel this vid we did has had impact and hope this documentation of "The Dump-stars"

helps to bring about the changes we all wish to see.

    Take care all

    Happy delivery to Debbo :)

  • mmm yummy, where bouts in aus u guys from?my mate does this from trash cans of big supermarkets he has found dvd players, skateboards amplifiers among tons of good food and other cool shit.

    its totally radical it is.

  • The dumpsters come from NSW Australia.

The wasteful society we live in does throw a lot of good stuff out, doesnt it?

Hopfully it will change. We cant keep going as we are and have a sustainable society.

  • It depends on local laws. Ask your relevant authorities.

  • Yeah, right, I bet you planted most of that stuff.

  • You know, Id like to say I faked it....really,but it is true...and, except for the mushrooms, all from one bin on one day.

    Sorry to dissapoint you.

  • Great haul.

    Keep it up.

  • where are you diving>? i would love to try this, but i have no idea where to go. Do you always go when the store is closed? at night?

Do you have a website or blog????

  • I went out with the "dumpsters" to a bin outside a large multinational supermarket.

Any supermarket will do. Check your local regulations...and how friendly security are. Dont damage stuff, and take what you can use only....others may come later.

The store was closed, though that is not always necessary...depending on how sympathetic managers are.

I believe there are links to sites from this vid, and other vids on youtube would have further links.

    Cheers :)...reclaim and feel good.

  • One big shout of Hurray!! Hurray, for freegans and others who get goodies out of trash. What are you ashamed of?? Oh, my goodness I think so-and so saw me in this dumpster!! What am I going to do??

  • That's great! At least somebody gets it instead of the landfill, heck what am I talking about even the old fruit and veggies can go to compost. Good job... you get 5 stars.

  • ...A voice of reason in the wilderness of the throw away society..

    Cheers :)

  • freegans dont have jobs or pay tax.

yet they can feel free to use our health service?

    its rediculous

all the foods used for is to feed the other freegans in their community

they cant send it off to countries in need of help cause its most likely out of date.

this "community" really needs a wake up call

  • That is very generalistic....isnt it?

I have seen youtube vids that show quite different situations...have a look :)

If society was not so wasteful and money orientated perhaps you would not have to come to this site just to complain.

  • Do you do any service to your community?...or do you just take.? It is the system of wastefulness and unsustainability that needs to be removed...not the freegans. Change the system, and the freegans dissapear. There you go...a mission for you! change the world...dont just complain. :)

  • come on...

at least i PAY for my food

dont go digging for food that could have been put in there for something being wrong with it.

ive seen many vids that have them eating mouldy food

"washing the mould off makes it fine"

    no it doesnt

  • All I can say in reply to that comment is...look at the food that was collected..does it look mouldy or off?

It is thrown out as new stock arrives...even if ok. This is to maintain the ordering structure that the supermarket has in place. The good food should not be there. We are a wasteful society. It has to change.Thats all this vid is for...not to promote freegansim...but to show the shameful waste of good food.

  • not all food thrown out is for new stock

i used to work in a supermarket.

food is thrown out as new stock arrives

due to the date on the packaging.

hence why it was all the stuff that

goes out of date quicker than most food (bread, eggs and fruit and veg)

  • No, not all food thrown out is new stock....but a fair percentage is. Look, we can argue about this all day....in the end you just have to look at the food that was collected to judge for yourself.ALL came from 1 BIN!...I took a bag of tomatoes from that trip...they were good for two weeks.

  • What?...get a dictionary dude....or perhaps an education.

  • rofl isnt this like thieving?!! 'Thou shalt not steal' you do tho scabby bastards.

  • Is it theft to reclaim the things a wasteful society would bury in a landfill while people starve due to economic rationalism?

In Australia it is a game...elsewhere it is survival. I feel the theft rests in the hands of greedy, out of control, exploitation of the masses by big corporations. See the big picture dude.

  • damn straight,

get a job and buy some fresh food and maybe one day you'll quit shitting yourselfs.

  • A lot of people with good jobs do it. Its about waste....not money. People like you thinking about money all the time are what cause this waste...WAKE UP!

  • rofl you guys piss ese off
