If you could actually *watch* this TV movie in the early '80's shortly after it's release, the movie's casting of Stephen Furst (aka "Kent Dorfman", "Flounder" from BOTH the movie "Animal House" & "Delta House", it's short-lived ABC TV spin-off series) opposite John Lithgow W/O laughing, you had absolutely no sense of humor whatsoever. "Yakety Sax", the "Benny Hill" theme, being dubbed into the audio track just makes the ridiculous even more hilarious.
I saw this when it first aired. I was eight years old. Gave me nightmares too. I vividly recall in one of my dreams that I stepped out of the house onto our porch and saw my Mother was pointing to a field that was near our home and said, "Pretty". I looked in the field and there was a giant mushroom cloud. At least I can laugh at it now.
Hmmm. People fleeing + Yakety Sax is funny. But when the nukes hit and people get vapourised, even the Benny Hill theme can't make it less horrific. I still can't beleive how close we were to this back during the cold war :(
Not bad at all! Benny Hill Music (Yakity Sax) is always fun. And The Day After was really good for it's time. Not bad special effects for the mid-80s with only a minimum of stock footage. The double mushroom clouds was very impressive. Still, for a better Nuclear War check out the British production THREADS. That one is magnificent. Terrible, but magnificent.
@Kenji314159 A lot do, considering when this movie was made though most of the cars would not have been stopped, but these days nearly all cars will be stopped by an EMP, they have devices used to stop cars in police chases, go look on google.
Just think. For years this was what two half's of the world wanted to do to each other. They though that it was going to be as light hearted as this video.
@Vankpker034 You had to be there to get the full effect. "There" meaning the early-mid 80's when this sort of scenario was much more likely to be played out for real. Not just possible, but people thought of it as something that would happen eventually. It was a very fatalistic time, especially for people who saw these as kids. The underlying message seemed to be "There's no point in preparing you for the future, because THIS is your future. If you even live to see it."
@bustybabesforyou This movie and Threads gave me nightmares for year too, and I'm tired of being afraid. Just calm down and have a laugh - that's how you take the power away from fear.
As for your concerns about Israel - that's why we need to limit the political power of the christian right as much as possible. Those are the people who want to support Israel no matter what stupid thing they do, with the vague hope that a war in the middle east will being about the second coming of jesus.
@kunoichii I remember watching Threads in 1984. It was also repeated again on British television in 1985, to mark the 40th anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Anyone or country who supports or is a proxy for Israel, is a terrorist.
@kunoichii First of all no war will bring the second coming. Second, I find this hilarious. Third, Israel won't dare kick over that chamber pot of piss. Iran, I can't see them doing something as foolish as using any theoretical future nukes on Israel, either. Fourth, the political power needs to be limited, period. Ole Uncle Sam has his hand in too many cookie jars and pockets belonging to rich foreigners.
@bustybabesforyou by the time israle gets a nuke Iran will have either been gone, been nuked, have 20 nukes, or taken ober israle. Im iranian and things are fucked up in iran
I reckon the biggest challenge would be to do the awful tunnel scene in the french film "Irreversible" ... double dare ya (though hey, let's face it, they wouldn't let you put those visuals on YouTube...)
A "Benny Hill Presents: The Day After": nuclear warfare was my Cold War training in the U.S. Armed Forces, many factors in war and not everyone carries a rifle as there are higher causes in organization and manning the war machine. Anyway, the game Civilization allows a possible nuclear ending, in addition to building a starship ending, and I would set up the map for a nuclear ending--one conclusion, once the nukes fly, finish it, there are no friends.
Proven. Shall we consider this the Benny Hill Law of Transparent Comedy wherein any piece of video has comedic properties if shown at a specific accelerated rate while the compound Yakety Sax is applied to the reaction?
Like to see something that gave me nightmares made fun of.

And i dont find your 'movie' funny, you could mix it a little bit, not just speed it up and adding music, its not creative and turned out really lame

-The Day After wasn't bad at all, especially for 1980s television. Sure it had stock footage but showing twin mushroom clouds is very unique.
