Is the Middle East, Russia, China, South America etc also ignoring this conflict? Probably, don't try to pin the blame solely on the West, I'm sure China and certain Arab nation have their feet dipped in somewhere.
There certainly is plenty of weath there, including tantalum, cobalt, copper, tin, gold, diamonds, and yes, oil. It may well be in the interests of policymakers to keep things quiet. But I suppose we need to also consider why the media, aid groups and educators play along and give so little attention to such a conflict. This has something to do with the identity (race etc), complexity of the conflict, and the interdependence of all the actors in the game.
The reason why its ignored it would cost a lot of money policing all these countries when we can rob them of their resources with minimal costs. Essentially what has to be done, you have to kill all the people doing the killing. The world is juggling a shitload of problems, its folly to expect help where its actually needed. All these people should get a second chance at life. To be born into a shit hole, raped, beaten, and to see a shitload of people living like kings around you would be awful.
@aaronhoffmeyer The reason there is conflict there is because there IS money to be made there. Ever wonder where important metals come from that are used in the production of electronics? Look up conflict metals if you doubt me. It's almost impossible to buy electronics without inadvertently supporting conflict metals.
Blood diamonds have received media attention so they are watched a bit more but conflict metals are off the radar due to the fact that they are needed for the economy.

Actually, I believe there's still a video around where Zbig Bzezinsky puts it in a nutshell...
"...because it's not in the interest of US and our allies..."
