  • What makes this song so open to individual interpretation ( in my opinion ) is that each individual who anticipates the journey through life that is written about in this song may have

different expectations about the outcome of the journey as well as the journey itself. These

expectations could be based on optimism, uncertainty or perhaps a longing for something

that the individual has not yet experienced in their life.

  • Lovely footage of my fav lady. ♥

  • Ohh God this is great!! Thank you so much for posting.

  • I thought Julie Christy aged better than any broad in show business, but maybe it was Ms. Horne.

  • Not the best haircut for her face. Love her style though

  • that hairstyle is unfortunate!

  • Gosh, loved Ms. Horne. So talented, so beautiful...grace personified.

  • How very lovely...Thanks so much for sharing :)

  • @yajairaslave So in other words, NO ONE should have sung this song other than the original bland "singing" of Audrey Hepburn?? Not Andy Williams who has a giant hit with this song - he is the one the song is associated with? Not countless other real singers who added their interpretation? You're not knowledgeable about music or the recording industry.

  • @NYCguys2007 you are partially correct sir: i am knowledgeable more than you realize. obviously, by means of the internet, you have no idea with whom you're dealing. understandable. also, there are tons of people in the industry that are very aware and have no ear or talent what-so-ever.

  • @NYCguys2007 i think you'll find DANNY williams had a hit with it look it up its perfection

  • @NYCguys2007 Bland? Bland? You are the one not knowlegeable, Mancini is quoted saying that she captured the essence of the song. Now I do think that this is good, so was Andy Williams, but don't knock the original. As far as bland how are you supposed to sing deep in thought sitting on a fire escape. Did you want bravura?

  • @yajairaslave wow are u serious this is LENA HORNE how could it be awful she was a great entertainer

  • @yajairaslave wow are u serious this is LENA HORNE how could it be awful she was a great entertainer

ps: she looks so very much like my late Grandmother right here rip Ms. Horne and Grandma

  • @leplaq it is comical. the only thing she has going for her is her original and outrageous performances.; and that seems to be enough for mainstream entertainment. i mean honestly, listen to it.. I hope you're not in music.

  • @yajairaslave well no im not in music but i know not what that has to do with anything, anyway it sounds to me like u have something personal against Lena yourself im just saying. "the only thing she has going for her" i mean she accomplished alot and is well respected but i guess she never won as many awards and acclaim as you have.

  • @leplaq yeah, i just looked at your 'favorites' and i think i see what's going on here. take it easy shanice..

  • @yajairaslave srry not into youtube feuds got enough problems so argue with yourself :P

  • @leplaq uhmm.. yeah. as displeasing as chatter head arguments are, if you follow the thread, i've been defending myself.. but yes, ending this would be good.

  • @yajairaslave okay thats fine im just saying your getting a bit too upset over this we all have opinions about things thats fine lets just not disrespect eachother over them.

p.s next time you dont like a specific entertainer dont watch the video :)

  • @leplaq Actually, i do get a little worked up when people start in on taking pot shots at me online. i made a statement. if you do not like the statement, then don't respond. you're the one that attacked me. actually this vid clip was a bit of a revelation for me and some self discovery. not being familiar with ms horne's work i was curious- now i'm not. so i don't need a 'broken glass' racist giving me advice- try a little diversity.

  • @yajairaslave wow in my 25 years of being a (black person in america) ive never been called a racist b4. hmmm anyway i dont believe i attacked you at all your the one that attacked me look at your own comments. also i didnt give you advice i merely made a statement, but if thats how you feel it must be true.

-try a little common sense and mental stability

  • @leplaq yes, you don't have to put in parenthesis "black person in america". simply looking at your favorites and your volatile reaction to my disliking the the disagreeable ms horne is more than enough evidence to come to the conclusion that you're indeed black and a black racist. you didn't simply make a statement you where being snide and smug and insulting. -you know this. but for the sake of playing and your need to save-face ill play along. just my common sense. good day. and good bye.

  • @yajairaslave omg first of all how do u tel some1 is black just by looking at their favorites? second i was neither being snide or rude to you i didn't call u "shanice" whatever that was supposed to mean. look at the very first thing i said to you i said "this is Lena Horne how could it be awful" i didn't call u any names and i am certainly no trying to save face (not necessary). i guess looking at my favorites and being black and all i should just shutup

  • @yajairaslave you must really hate glee then

  • @TheAliya09 that's so funny! i actually can't stand that show.. i sat and watched it for like five minutes.. i couldn't figure it out for the life of me.. its worse than the office.. another show i can't figure out. what's the big attraction go glee anyway..

  • she had such a beautiful voice where it would fulfill hearts :) rip Lena you will be missed

  • wow so nice....

  • She is SOOOOO beautiful. This version is an A+++++++. Can't help but hitting the replay button over and over and over and over and over again. Rest is peace sister Horne!!!

  • Stunning. Such elegance

  • I had the rare privilege of seeing Lena Horne in concert at the Pauley Pavillion in Westwood, CA when I was a teenager and have never forgotten the experience. She was a beautiful woman with a stunning, light tremolo in her voice that made me shiver. I will never forget the experience.

  • Was this performance from her hosting the first television special by a black female?

  • Rest in peace Lena, the angels are now your audience.

  • I love you my dear soror. You had a phenomenal voice. May you always rest in perfect peace. We love you dearly, and you will be missed.

  • Sorry to say, but IMO she looks like daughter of Uhura abd Spock. But she sings beautifully.

  • @bluetooth718 totally !!!! That made me laugh (with tears in my eyes from her singing)

  • Comment removed

  • one of the finest singers of all time! always in style and fashion..sooo regal!! we miss u ms horne..rest with the angels now!!! *soo saddd*

  • Just wonderful

  • @bezelthg This is on a very good CD of 2 lps - Lena in Hollywood/Feelin Good. You can also buy the MP3 of the song separately. However - she sings it live much BETTER than on the album.

  • Perfect!!!!!!!

  • The passion she uses to sing is so amazing to me. I love playing music. Can't wait until I expereience it this deeply.

  • This song always reminds me of my mother as it was one of her favorites and she used to turn the radio up when it came on. It will alway remain indelibly seared into my synapses as a result of her tremendous love. Miss you EC.

  • thank u nycguys, and miss lena, you too.

  • well actually she did that in all her performances where she did not lipsing she just opens her mouth wide like whitney quivers her lips like tina flicks her hair its just a habit lol Lena reminds me so much of my late grandmother

  • Thank you for posting this.

  • i watch this like 3 times a day and just marvel at her presence and masterful interpretation....

  • I started tearing up!!!! I can listen to her forever. No one knows how she gets me thru life. I feel every tone in her voice and the melody in my fingertips when I hear her sing. She can bring a man to his knees, and sooth a babies tears. I wish I knew her. I'm only 27, but her songs are timeless. They're some of my favorites!!!

  • @TahshaTPitsMe I used to have Lena on 78 records my hair on my arms stands up whenever I hear this song

    What a woman.

Thank you for all your beauty Lena

  • @TahshaTPitsMe You are sooooooooo cool for saying this. I hope you are blessed and loved.

  • Unbelievable way of putting the words across with that one of a kind voice. Her facial expressions and gorgeous eyes make me want to only totally focus on her. She was still recording at 80 and did a Gap commercials. Such a genuine real person who we could all relate to. We will miss you Lena!

  • 0:43 The way she sings "wherever you're goin, I'm goin your way..." made me tear up. So full of longing.

  • @NYCguys2007 you're right amplification was available from the 30s on; in the 60s, amplification could be excellent if you had a well chosen equipment and the right engineer, but this may not have happened so often...

  • @swingmanu This is from a NETWORK NBC TV program, color even in 1965. They had all the correct equipment.

  • @KatherineNoblesYou don't if you sing very low... this recording wasn't sang loud at all, so she didn't have to open her mouth so wide. She probably lipdubbed it singing loud and with an audience, so she let her voice ring -and this cannot be heard in the present recording.

  • I was late in discovering the beauty that was Lena Horne.

    Thank you Ms. Lena.

Your work is done. Your time for rest has come.

  • Along with stormy weather... one of my favorite songs... this one in particular because my mother used to sing along to the radio and eventually we'd sing together...

  • Oh my goodness, I nearly cry in hearing this and her version, Love U Always Ms. Horne

  • Rest In Peace, the remarkable Ms. Horne...

  • To all you Lena fans I'm 100% with you all she was a real star, in cabaret, or with a band, she had presence and style, further she won't be easily forgotten.

  • She was a class act as was Mancini who wrote this song.

We've lost so many memorable people who have shaped this world for the better.

God bless her. May she remain safe in God's loving care.

  • A beautiful song sung by a classy lady.

  • Beautifully Fantastic!

  • She was magic! R.i.p lena

  • @NYCguys2007 you obviously know nothing about singing

  • @bms0013 , Correct statements. She will be missed for those she touched their Hearts and Souls . A Diamond Treasure indeed !

  • A true diamond from the rough of Brooklyn. God, the world lost such a true, elegant, and talented treasure this year. 92 years of pure majestic class.

  • Remembering Lena....Stunning Voice leave this world

  • R.I.P. Ms Horne

  • @PJCoan right on and maybe in heaven they can sort out for sure if you are a black woman or a white!

  • Legendary...Classic...Cool

  • RIP Lena!

  • Wow, the interpretation of the song is fantastic!! She sang with heart and soul - like the many jazz greats did. Her voice ... well how do you class a legend?!!!!

  • bullshit katherine! The mouth opening is for more enunciation and flow! There WAS amplification!

  • I still remember watching "Stormy Weather" in the 80s on VHS and realizing how much talent and beauty this woman had. Farewell Ms Horne.

  • rip Lena Horne-

  • I love that gown she's wearing. Some things just don't go out-of-style. RIP Lena.

  • tatooss would be uncivilized on this classy lady.....way too much charm and grace.

  • Sorry, he was Billy Strayhorn. Also, sad but triumphant Hollywood story involving Humphrey Bogart in her NYTimes Obit.

  • Classy. Hearing it all over. Excellent excellent obituary in the NYTimes.

As a gay man I find it esp heartening to have just read her one true love happened to be a gay musician she said she couldn't be intimate with, but gave her so much instruction and hope. Yay!

  • Awesome Talent , With beauty to match . Rest in peace Dear Soul !

  • She's incorporating all the techniques she learned from Billy Strayhorn who helped her realize her vocal potential.

  • So long, beautiful Lady.

  • Why can I stop Crying. I so Miss her!! I use to imitate her style as a kid. I wanted to be so graceful and beautiful like her. She was and still a role model for me. RIP Ms. Horne You will be so missed!!

  • I love the 60's Lena. Classy arraigments for a classy beautiful lady. Lenny Hayton her husband wrote the classiest charts for her. Long live a Queen.

  • @KatherineNobles Reminds me of my high school choir teacher, yelling at us to open our mouths. "Stupid mouths, intelligent eyes!!"

  • rest in peace. you were a legend.

  • What a fine lady. Loved by my late parents and grandparents. RIP, Lena.

  • what a great voice u will be missed

  • I literally thought about her yesterday morning

  • Much love and respect to Ms. Horne for all she endured she came shining through. I believe in you! Sleep in heavenly peace.

  • RIP my beautiful Lena... and thank you for everything

  • what's with the over wide-open mouth?

  • @NthShout it's called professional singing.

  • @sweetcharlie63 ahhh.. because at one point it looks funny. :)

  • @NthShout

Who cares! She was a beautiful soul with a beautiful voice. She had style and grace.

Billy Daniels was another great singer that got a lot of criticism for his style. As Louis Armstrong used to say "there ain't but two kinds of music...good... and... bad, if you like it its good, if you don't its bad". Dont criticize appearances just listen!

  • Divine star. Rest in peace. 10th of May 2010

  • @klokheten she died May 9th, some are saying the 8th, now I see the 10th.

  • @sweetcharlie63 I am very sorry for this. I catched the news from CNN and they use to be updated at the very day so I presumed that she passed today.

I should have checked it. Nevertheless. She is gone to eternity now

and the meaning of the message remains.

  • We'll miss you..

  • RIP Lena Horne. :-(

  • sublime. couldnt ask for more perfection.

thank you for everything. most accomplished lady, most thank you for showing us ourselves by your comment on us. and thank you for every hour of joy

  • Rest in peace, Ms. Horne.

  • RIP beautiful :'(

  • RIP.

  • RIP Lena Horne

  • She's lovely...

  • fantastic, Miss Lena...

  • @NYCguys2007 LOL WOW.

  • Okay. Singing is like kicking a soccer ball. Sometimes 25 yards is all you need and and not 50 yards. Over sung for my liking. A great singer nonetheless. I thought Shirley Bassey over sung it as well. That's why Sintra was so great. You never felt he over did it in any of his songs. The same goes for Nat Cole..

  • @darkoanton5 There is nothing over done about this! It simply oozes out and is in perfect step with the musical chart.

  • For the record I think Lena Horn is a fantastic singer. It's just a bit too drawn out for me. Probably because I'm used to slightly faster versions.

  • she uses her face like shirley bassey when she sings

  • strange that there is a key change from A to Bb (for trumpet) the second time ... maybe the defect was in its recording

  • she looks like SHIRLEY BASSEY but shes great than shirley bassey!!

  • Seems so melancholy , beautifully done

  • Incredible interpretation!! Thank you for posting.

  • thank you!

  • I LOVE the depth Lena puts into the lyrics of this song. In new new book about her by James Gavin, he criticizes it because it's not like everyone elses version. He says Lena flinches in "pain" as she sings. Yeah, so? Gavin should take a singing course.

  • I sought this video out because of the book and he aside from being a crappy writer doesn't know what he's talking about. This was a moving performance.

  • Sorry, I meant to hit thumbs up, not down, but wasn't paying attention. You are dead-on, very moving! Lena at her best!

  • are you talking about james gavin?

  • yes

  • @NYCguys2007 I read that excerpt, and I found no criticism from Gavin. He just talks about how Ms. Horne would sing traditionally optimistic songs, like "Moon River", with sadness and pain. It's not a critique; it's a description of the parallels between Ms. Horne's real-life frustrations and her performances during that same time. It must have been tough for Ms. Horne, but thank goodness for her truthfulness, which left us indelible performances like this one.

  • @RandyMBautista I disagree completely. Gavin doesn't GET HER singing at all. Lena gives us a thought-out dramatic performance - she's ACTING in song, displaying what could be done with that song that nobody else did with it. And he claims she couldn't act.

  • @NYCguys2007 i agree 100 percent with you Lena planned out every single facial expression and movement she ever did she interpreted song lyrics very well and i think this song right here was meant to be sung like this to me it is a sad song

  • @NYCguys2007 James Gavin only gets James Gavin. Arrogant queer.

  • @RandyMBautista Also remember that this song may have had a deeper, different meaning as she sang it- it was around this time (mid 1965) that she found out her dear, best friend, Billy Strayhorn, was diagnosed with cancer. Back then cancer was pretty much untreatable, and it devastated her.

  • Amazing.....better than the garbage they put out now days. There will never be a time like this again. Always treasure it!

  • This performance is so amazing, the arrangement so haunting, it's giving me goosebumps!

  • a classic by one of the greatest, and most exquisitely beautiful divas of all! Gr8 post!

  • and i'll bet you're a rare and talented beauty.....

    vile, racist comments.

  • I will guess this person is a pimply faced 17 year old lashing out at a 44 year old VIDEO image...very pathetic!

  • You ought to buy a mirror!!

  • My God, she's so pretty! Thanks for this post!

  • I met her twice in NYC after her one woman show. She is a CLASS ACT all the way. She truly emotes and feels what she sings. Thanks ever so much for posting

  • SHE is exqusite!

    John-Niles of California

  • prety

  • Beautiful talented singer, what a voice!.

  • beautiful delivery of this song. her version gives you this weird feeling like a dream or sweet nostalgia.

  • Excellent phrasing and feeling for the song!

  • Simply the best, I respect and I admire you, Miss. Lena....

Simplemente lo mejor, Yo la respeto y la admiro, Sra. Lena...

  • Only a great artist can do this...

Moon River, seeming so simple, is one of the most complicated lycrics and melodies to sing.

And if you don't believe that, just turn on your own microphone and try for yourself.

This seemingly understated delivery captures every nuance, conveying the theme of almost unbearable yearning.

Yearning was something that Lena was forced to master.

Listen to her Broadway show "The Lady and Her Music". It will never be matched for its range and depth.

  • Beautiful song and performance

  • Thanks for posting that, before my time, but a brilliant volcalist and what can I say about the lyrics.

  • love it. i don't no why but this is one of my favourite versions of Moon River

  • Another awesome performance by Lena.

  • Lena horne. I love this song. thanks for posting it. I wrote about her on my blog if you'd like to read or come visit it's easy to google traditionalpopstandards dt com.

or if you want to read only about Lena use the address below just remove the ) from it and add a dot. :) enjoy thanks lena.

    traditionalpopstandards)com/lena-horne-it-aint-necessarily-so/

  • What a Lady Singer, the best!

  • How sweet and smooth her voice is -

  • hi

any chance you might have the album version of moon river leana horne would be greatfull if you could upload that if you have it, not available on itunes/napster or free bees music finders

  • i wonder when the movie will come out cus i heard lena wants whitney housten to play her

  • FYI: Alicia Keys has been chosen to portray Lena Horne in an upcoming Biopic of her life.

  • I honestly can't see anyone other than Alicia Keys playing Lena Horne. She is the perfect choice! The physical resemblance alone between Alicia and Lena is amazing. Thanks for the update!

  • You're Welcome! I totally agree. I said a few years ago that Alicia Keys would be perfect for that role. Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson are too old and not light enough to carry that part. I think its important to have an actress that is young enough (to go from young to old) and light enough to convincingly carry the part.

  • Much agreed! I remember seeing Alicia a couple years a go at some red carpet event. She had on a 30's style gown, with her hair styled to match that particular period, and I said OMG that's Lena Horne all over again!

Do you know if this is a big screen production? (I pray that it is)

  • Oprah is producing it so I'm gussing it will be made for television.

  • Well that's cool too. I'll take the made for television as well. As long as Lena is honored properly I'm happy! Besides, if Oprah's involved, you know it's going to be a big deal! Oprah does every thing top notch!

  • I'm curious to how this would all work out since Alicia sounds nothing like Lena.

  • They would either train her to sing in the similar style OR just dub her vocals. just like how they did Halle Berry for Dorothy Dandridge and Angela Bessate for Tina Turner.
