  • Beat is tight as hell

  • You can't miss JODY WATLEY she shines on her own~

  • disco right on my finger

  • Great disco from the scratch...

  • @jwatley. thank you so much for clarifying that. But did you guys go on ST and perform in those now infameous jumpsuits:))) Or was this video your only performance with this song? It looks like so much fun to perform. I love it.

  • HAHA.THIS IS VERY FUNNY OLD SCHOOL DISCO!!!!

  • This is excellent quality. Thank you. I wonder if Jody Watley @jwatley1 can help us out on this one. I thought Jody, Jeffrey & Gary did their first appearance of 'Uptown Festival' on ST and wore white jumpsuits. Can someone set us straight please. My perm is growing out waiting for the answer to this one:)

  • @Joy77 The three people on the front of the uptown festival lp in those white jump suits are Jeffery Daniels, Cleo Kennedy and Gary Mumford. Pat Powdrell of the Ikettes ( Ike and Tina) was also one of the key vocalists on "Uptown Festival" but is not pictured. This album was recorded as the foundation of shalamar. Cleo was replaced by Jody and Gary was replaced by gerald brown (the soultrain gang) who howard hewett later replaced.

  • @pecantan00023 @Joy77 Actually, I am in the white jumpsuit on the illustrated cover of "Uptown Festival" with Gary Mumford and Jeffrey Daniel. We did a photo session (the photo used for the illustration can be seen in Jody Watley Evolving Style Shalamar and Beyond Video, it's a black and white). Cleo of course sang on Uptown Festival single only. Gary, Jeffrey and I did a promotional tour for Shalamar before Gary decided show business wasn't for him and I believe he wanted to go into ministry.

  • @pecantan00023 Wow, thanks for that. My sister keeps telling me they performed on ST in white jumpsuits. I just wish Jody, Jeffery or Gerald could shed some light on this. She says she's not going crazy, but I'm having second thoughts, LOL.:)))

  • Iám so sold what a rytmic and soul people hmmmm god bless you..

  • Nice Disco dance from the beginning

  • Great singing and great session players. Love those keyboards (Wurlitzer electric piano?). Can really move to this one. Absolutely first class dance record.

  • @MsThickness46 this song was actually recorded before Howard Hewitt joined the group.

  • Shalamar was always fun to dance to- ray

  • How could Dick Griffey (PBUH) say that Jody wasn't "really" a singer?!?

  • 1:07 I found myself dancing like this not too long ago while doing the electric slide lol!

  • One of my personal favourites ever.

  • @vaughnvdg and everyone who responds to my comments... and Shalamarman- thanks for listening to me. Sometimes i just blurt things out because they are so heavy on my mind. But what I find most fulfilling is that there are many people who can see things the way they are. We just need to put the SOUL back in everything we do in our lives. If we do we will be much better off as a people. It is time for us to WAKE UP.

  • Those were the days thx for taking me and our good frinds with good test back on a memory lane. Saddly they don't make them like this anymore what a shame. I can say I was lucky to see them live in London on ther hey days....

  • Sa-ooooouuul Train! I miss that show! Jeffrey Daniel! Yah Man!

  • Good times. Thanks for uploading this.

  • I remember seeing them at the Limelight Nightclub in Fort Hallandale, Fla. What a show they put on! I still remember it 30 years later. What memories and what great music!

  • wow the quality is great in 360p. love this song.

  • old skool is the best

  • Brings back memories. Thank you for posting.

  • Owa!? Thank You, "ntp1".

  • V.NICE BOZEFUZE.

  • @musiclover77able,this was the time when catchy, danceable music was king. And truthfully, that's all that should matter.Great music done well. : D

  • Fantastic : )

  • who are those 3 people ?? doesn't look like Watley or Hewett or Daniel .. Did Hewett sing lead on this?? I read he was the lead from 1979 -1985-- Somebody explain what I am watching here Thanks

  • @lpvcrcd I see this was from 1978 so who is that lead? ?

  • I love is Shalamar...

  • ouha !!! good ! nostagie quand tu nous tiens !!!

  • Great song. It is amazing what happens in the inner workings of a music group. Most fans only see the TV performances and music videos. All the things that happen behind the scenes are a mystery until many years later. This is one of my favorite Shalamar songs.

  • I love this video and song. It brings back so many wonderful memories. I've just always wondered what happened to the original lead singer, Gerald Brown. Thank you for posting.

  • 0:52 WORK EM OUT JODY! jodyjodyjody.

  • Jody is amazing !! so sexy and talented

  • @Shalamarman...I'm glad you're not bitter about their success. It's crazy how people don't pickup on full potential...Jody had way too much presence for them not to think she wouldn't be something! But, you're right...we can be ghetto at times LOL. This is actually my favorite Shalamar song...I was about 7 when this came out and would drive people crazy saying they "can take that to the bank". Bwhaha!! Thanks for the additional info here and all the best...

  • @Shalamarman I played the grooves outta this cut. LOL, I was very young and my brother was a DJ back then. I definitely remember Mr. G. Brown! I loved the cover design of Disco Gardens, and would play that album for hours. Then WHAM the next album comes out and he just seemly disappeared. No internet in those days to look anything up, and to young to know what questions to ask. Thanks for your great contribution Mr. Gerald Brown (Shalamarman) & Thanks for the memories!!

  • dude you had a very nice voice and did you have any hits after you left the group, singing with others and on your own? you did not seem conceited like howard and i agree that once jody and jeffrey left the name should have left too because mickey and delisa and dicks daughter were butt

  • @shalamarman are you still acquaintances with jody and jeffery? LOVE YOUR VOICE!!!!!!!!!

  • the guys who were involved in the "Shalamar adventure" included many scrooks...I am talking especially of the guy called Simon Soussan a French-Morrocan producer who participated in the album "Uptown Festival"(1977); not to talk about Mr.Griffey, not so honest, and group member Howard Hewett... I've read enough negative comments about these 3(at least) on videos related to Shalamar...

  • What , I can't believe is Dick and Jeffrey are still taking shots at me 30 years later . What's the point . At least be truthful . Dick gave me a $15,000.00 check to go on a promotional tour . But , it was money we'd already earned in Australia . I showed the check to Jeffrey and Jody . No secrets between us . He gave them nothing . I didn't like how he treated them . But , this was not my group . I left when it got ridiculous . Watching the TV1 accounts was disheartening . He NEVER paid them .

  • Hey guys . The only call I'm waiting on is the one telling me where my $785,000.00 royalty check is . I couldn't work for $300.00/week . I was making that kind of money as a lab tech at Formica ; five years before Shalamar . I was signed to the Soul Train Gang . I turned down offers with the Ojays to keep singing with my brother (Terry) in STG . By the way . Jeffrey did call asking me to come back after Howard's ego showed up . They still weren't being paid . So don't hate like Jeffrey .

  • @Shalamarman This is one of the things that makes the internet so great. You're the last person I need to tell how the industry is. Much harder to supress what really happened now that cyberspace is runing tit for tat with traditional media channels Were it not for youtube, all many of us would have is the "official" SOLAR story...

  • when these tunes were around us black and white folks were very in love with the music and dancing to get into a fight, bring back the funk.

  • Great guitar on this song. Its all good !

  • AMEN!

  • Shalamar without Howard just doesn't seem quite right. No disrespect to the others. Jody is the shh. Love you Jody. If you read this, look me up.

  • @PHATBOYTREX Howard thought the same way . His comments of the same caused the group to divide . Perhaps it's time to stop picking the group apart and just enjoy .

  • @Shalamarman I first saw Shalamar in 1983 on tv performing "Dancing In The Sheets". I was only 7. Howard is the "face" of Shalamar because his voice is who I group hearing from Shalamar. Didn't mean to offend you. Groups fall apart all the time. You guys are so fortunate to have "made it". Most artist wont see a $7 royalty check for doing what we love.

  • @phatboytrex1976 Your timetable is off, Dancing In The Sheets came out after member Jody Watley's departure in 1984. Though I wasn't really a big fan of the group, I would say Watley was and is the face she still gets more play. Certainly her profile over the years has generated far more notoriety. I wouldn't know the other guys if I saw them being honest. If memory serves that song you mention was from Footloose soundtrack which came out in 84 and from what I see in Google 2 new members

  • @chicsensibilities I really don't think so. You say I am off because you disagree on what could be a few months. I remember things by events that took place. Yes it could of been 84. I was 7-8. I remember 83. You speak as if I said 1986. Many on soundtracks in 84 were recorded and even released in 83. Same as today. Moreover today's technology has made the recording process is a lot less time consuming.

  • @phatboytrex1976 I understand that although technology certainly wasn't the same in 80's as it is today. From what I gather Watley left in 1984, a talent search was done for a new girl according to the Unsung documentary on Tvone. I was primarily responding to your comment that you saw Shalamar promoting Dancing in The Sheets in 1983, since Watley was still in it and still promoting their last album with Dead Giveaway, et al. and disagreed with face of group comment

  • No no no. You misunderstood. I was saying I remember as a child seeing the video in 1983. Well i guess that is a form of promotion. But ya know who cares. I'm trying to work on my own material. Its all gravy.

  • Nice song I like Jodi

  • absolutely love this performance.....such a great disco track

  • Fantastic groove on this and luv watchin Jody's awesome dance moves.

  • Go 'head ... LOL ... I love this song.

  • 70's classic thanks for sending it ....

  • Anyone notice Jody Waacking, which later became voguing. Almost twenty years.LOL

  • yes, she debuted that in the mid 70s on soul train. i wish soul train would load videos of her dancing. hard to believe she started on that show at 14

  • Wasn't Howard Hewitt a member of this group.

  • @joy77 : I was wondering too if a TV appearance of Shalamar(with Gary Mumford) of 1977 ever existed...now that I know it is the case...keep us informed if ever you find it again...(must be as rare as Delegation TV footage in 1976 on a U.K. TV show ...here on YouTube...sweet !!!)

  • Yes. I can tell you the first appearance of Shalamar on ST had Gary Mumford.. (ep. 213)

  • @nickfreshalive ; take nothing from Gary and his performance on uptown festival . But , the voice on the " Disco Gardens " album and " Take That To The Bank " happens to be me . Gerald Brown .

  • I know and I'm very much a fan, Mr. Brown. Wow. thanks for reappearing and sharing your side of the story. You would've thought that TVOne-- to at least get the full story-- should've found you. Maybe it would've been too much of an expose on the business practices of Dick. There are few folks on SoulTrainFans who used to work at Solar who say the same thing.

  • potrezami . This is not a video with Gary Mumford . None exists . Shalamar never became a reality until this union of Gerald Brown ; Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel . See the Unsung account . Jody says as much .

  • @Shalamarman : I know this one is a video with Gearld Brown ...Actually,I was answering to @Joy77 who said that a video including Gary Mumford did exist... Thanks for the info anyways

  • @potrezaml What I meant to say was that I seem to remember a Soul Train appearance with Gary Mumford. That must still exist. That was Uptown Festival. I know I'm right about that, but maybe only the owners of ST have it.

  • @Joy77

You might be right...(however; ex-group member Gerald Brown thinks that "there's none..." )

  • ça c'est de la musique!

  • God breath You.

  • I just LOVE my black people!! Especially before we were so preoccupied with having "pretty hair" and being "mixed" with something! Pure! Black! Beautiful! We are so AWESOME!

  • @Shareeberrie I couldn't agree more . After , I left Shalamar . I watched the company turn what Jeffrey ; Jody and I had created into a group of Prince cast offs . I was very disappointed . I know Jody was too . 'Cause quietly?!! We ghetto . LOL .

  • @Shareeberrie thanx 4 is comment. i agree 100%.

  • @Shareeberrie : )

  • @Shareeberrie Heard that sis. Also, we were more concerned about making REAL MUSIC!!!!

  • @Shareeberrie Los Angeles was the place to be for black back in them days. Then the crack and gang wars started. We went downhill in LA from that!

  • @Shareeberrie DOES THAT MEAN YOU DONT LIKE WHITE PEOPLE COS THAT AINT RIGHT!

MY SON IS MIXED RACED AND I LOVE BOTH BLACK AND WHITE!

MY BEST MATE IS BLACK AND I LOVE HIM TOO!

    BY THE WAY I'M WHITE!!!

  • wow... I love the lead vocalist on this. wonder what happened to him?

  • I agree with you on that point.

He was Soul Train Gang before.

  • You should look up the Shalimar Unsung series...it's very entertaining.....that's all I'm going to say...lol...you'll find out what happened to him...lol

  • Thanks of you to laugh. I'm happy that I expected. However, since I was born and raised in Japan, can not use more English. Sorry! (This is the text of google translation)

  • just saw it... you're right it was really interesting. "he's STILL waiting for that call" LOL!!

  • lol...I almost choked laughing so hard...lol....the guy was a good singer...he sould've just gone solo...but he didn't & he's still sitting by the phone 31 years later...lol

  • Look out! Bustin Karate moves all over the place. Hiya!

  • This was a time when uniqueness, melody, heart, soul, talent and true musicianship was the norm... Today's music is HOT unadulterated garbage compared to this! Miss these days!

  • @slimsxyblkwoman Oh, yeah : )

  • great clip.

  • Wow, I had no idea that Howard was not original to the group. I remember Jody and Jeffery from ST but I thought the three of them did this song together. How in the hell did Howard try to go on with those fake Shalamar members? Much love to Jody always. Her bg vocals made Shalamar unique.

  • The original lead singer's name is Gary Mumford. He has a great voice. He originally sang on their first 2 albums "Uptown Festival" and Disco Gardens" . When he left then there was Gerald Brown for a 6 month fill in then Jody and Jeffrey found Howard Hewett gigging around the Crenshaw strip at Mavericks Flat. Howard is the main glue to the group. Jody was also an important part of the group. Jeffrey was like the entertainment because of his great dancing abilities.

  • And also, before Mumford would be part of Shalamar, he too was a member of the Soul Train Gang.

  • DEEDUBB1979 You have most of your info correct . We found Howard at Mavericks flat . We actually considered him ; before , I sang the lead vocals on all of the Disco Garden sides . Dick thought he was too short and couldn't dance . So , I turned from artist developer to the group's front man . We had to meet record deadlines . But , " The Soul Train Gang " was the group I was signed to . I left . In walks Howard . Pretty good deal for them . Too bad they didn't stick toghether . They were great

  • It is money trouble. also...The ironic title of the song.

Right in the Socket Just like Money in the pocket.???

  • @Shalamarman.....It's great that you had come out under the rock (joke) and clarify some things during your experience with Shalamar. You should have gotten your royalty check(s). The group had been through alot just trying to make it work and get along with each other. I fully understand why Jody doesn't want to do a reunion tour/album with Howard & Jeffery. I am a big fan of Shalamar. I had bought every album that was released by them and replaced it on original cd. The group had a good run.

  • @Shalamarman Gerald, I just wanna acknowledge your awesome talent, and your real wurl insights below are much appreciated as well. Your lead on this song; every note, is heavenly magic! I can listen to this track over and over, and never tire.

  • @Shalamarman , you're right, Howard is not as good a dnacer than you, LOL!

  • I saw Shalamar in concert in 1983. Howard Hewitt had long taken over the lead but for me this was their best song pre- Hewitt. Great to see the original line up.

  • Thanks so much for posting Bozefuse. I must have missed this back in the day. Do you remember the one of them on the show doing Uptown Festival with Gary Mumford?

  • Sorry

I have never still seen the image of "Uptown Festival".

  • It would be the rarest of rare if it was found. They wore white suits like the picture on the album & I remember it was so exciting. It was their very first appearance on the show as a group and not Soul Train dancers. That footage is like goldust. Jody, Jeffrey, Gary...are you listening? Upload if you have it. Or anyone at SOLAR. Leon? Anybody? Thanks anyways Bozefuze

  • Outstanding bozefuze!!

  • The perfect tune for the credit crunch!

For a fairly commercial soul track it's still bloody good - I love that late 70s soul/jazz sound. Really classy. The original guy had a really nice voice too, though vocals were never Jody Whatley's great strength.

  • As long as Jeffrey and Jody were in the group, it didn't matter who the lead singer was. Jeffrey and Jody were Shalamar.

  • Oooh goodness who is that lead ? Never seen him before ... I am used to Howard, Jody and Jeff.

  • That is Gerald Brown ex Soul Train Gang. He left after this album Disco Gardens and was replaced by Howard Hewett for the following album Big Fun onwards. These clips are a real pleaser to a long ago Shalamar fan Bozefuse - thanks a lot.

  • Thank you for noticing.
