@DanDunningIV First of all, thanks a lot for the compliments ;) Since I'm using an amp simulation plugin I'm not using any physical pedals, but I do use some effects. For my lead tone I use a noise gate, a compressor, a delay and a fair amount of reverb.

@omega71828 Well, if I could give you one tip it's play the styles of music and songs that you like best. If you play what you like, practicing becomes a lot easier and way more fun :) Also try to practice as much different aspects as you can to become an overall better musician. So try to practice songs, scales, chords, licks, improvisation, technique, intervals and maybe try to write your own stuff. Hope this helps :)

i have a little trouble making a similar sound to you, i was wondering 2 things. 1. is it in drop D or standard and 2. would a noise suppressor get in the way at all? (soundwise, i can play correctly its just not sounding right)

@alastairjk Hey! The lead and acoustic guitars are in standard tuning, but I used a 7-string guitar and a 5-string bass for the rhythm parts, which both have an added low B-string. I don't think using a noise suppressor would give you any trouble, in fact I used one myself on the leads. Make sure not to turn it up too high or you might lose some sustain.

@woodythewoodchuck1 Hey! Personally, I really enjoy playing my Schecter because it sounds and plays great. I think you can get great chunky metal tones with it. I don't have a lot of experience with either Jackson or Washburn. Ibanez also offers some great models that can get you great metal tones. I would advice you to see what tones you like and which guitars are used to produce them. Make a selection, go to a guitar shop and try out as many guitars as possible to see which you like best.
