Order of Events:

1. The first Monkey Island games are inspired by the Pirates of the Carribean back when it was just a theme park ride, and also the book "On Stranger Tides".

2. A Monkey Island movie is written by Ted Elliott, but the film is cancelled.

3. Later, Ted Elliott writes the Pirates of the Carribean movies. They are VERY similar.

4. The fourth Pirates of the Carribean film is based upon "On Stranger Tides", the inspiration for the inspiration for the series. Confused yet?

Yes, but do you see cannibals? An army of the undead? An actual bar? A voodoo lady? Sure, it was inspired by it, but there's still tons of extra content added on to the original concept, so Monkey Island was still very original. There are so many things that Pirates of the Caribbean took from Monkey Island, it makes me mad. That's probably why Disney decided to make the trilogy as epic as possible. To get away with using Monkey Island as a base for everything that goes on in the trilogy.

Actually, the creators have long said that the game was inspired and based on the POTC ride. Certain elements were placed as homages. That being said, it was a very original creation and all characters and situations in the game were unique to the game.

He may have brought his ideas from the MI Project (which is very ovbious that he has done)...then there are the other writers bringing their own ideas...then there is the people who paid for the film who want some ideas of there own to be incorporated into it...then there is the ovbious influence from the disney ride of the same name....all that is mixed up together...the film then evolves naturally into something which, all in all, is very similar to MI!
