Sorry Mega, but snakes evolved to eat mice in the wild, and they have a right to live too. They have to be fed whole food like mice or chicks, otherwise they would suffer and die.
But we don't feed live mice - that WOULD be cruel! All our mice come humanely killed and pre-frozen - and are bred especially for the purpose (the same as the chickens and cows and sheep the rest of us eat..)
Hey Jim - we take Gethin out of his normal viv and feed him in a separate small tank: it minimises the risk he'll take in any substrate attached to the prey, and also saves him making a mess of his viv (we have known corns to constrict their prey so hard that it bursts - which means having to completely empty and clean the viv...!)
Gethin is still only very young and quite small (just over 2' long and 1-2" thick) so he's getting several week-old baby mice, once a week.
When he's an adult (in another year or so) he'll probably be on one fully grown mouse, every 7-10 days.
Snakes have excellent digestion systems, and absorb nearly all of their food - but their droppings can contain whatever they didn't need, including small bits of bone and fur.
hi is there any other way i could feed a corn snake somthing else its jst that i have had mice and hamsters before and it would make me sad to see that thanks
unfortunately, snakes a pure carnivores - they have evolved to eat rodents and mice, and without them as food they'll die.
I have heard that in the US you can buy "mouse-sausages", which are potentially a little less gory for the squeamish. But most snake keepers I know say their snakes won't touch them.
If you want any pet, then you must look after it well. I'm a veggie too - but I'm still happy to have a freezer full of dead mice if it means my snake is healthy and happy.
hey spidey just so you know, you can also feed corns chicks once they grow some. But it wouldn't be a main source of their diet you'd have to include mice and rats some where along the lines but don't worry it's not as bad as you think!
my corn snake isn't eating well :( was yours always this eager to grab the food? I've tried dangling it and moving it around to make it look alive but he just doesn't seem interested - any tips?
Gethin has always been a little greedy - but sorry to hear your corn is being fussy.
If corns won't eat, it's often because they're nothappy with their set-up: are you sure you have his temperatures right, that you've given him plenty of hides, water etc...?
Best advice i can give is to check one of the forums - we're members of the cornsnake forum - or ask at the shop where you bought him for advice
