  • Fedora 14 was my first Linux distro, absolutely loved it and still do, I would use Fedora but an issue with the kernel and my wireless card causes a system freeze.

  • i like :D

  • what is better / takes less RAM ubuntu or fedora

  • Personally I like The GIMP over shotwell...

  • @TheOrigonalKoil I like the Gimp quite a bit, but they serve completely different purposes, in my experience.

  • is it me or is every version of linux command line based?

  • @TheTechnoToast well, technically they all are. Some of them come with more graphical utilities to make command-line interaction less necessary, but at the end of the day, if you wanted to, you could run any Linux distro command-line only (Ctrl+Alt+F1 will take you to a terminal, for example).

  • @thisweekinlinux oh. that's dissapointing. Well I suppose I'll make my own OS then. Thanks :-)

  • I've ran out of places to turn... I need your help, Linux Community. I'm a bit of a newb and having Mac OS X, Windows 7, and even Ubuntu have flash ready by default spoiled me. I've followed the "Fedora Flash" guide but it didn't work for me, when I try playing videos, it says Gnash requires plugins that it can't find. Is it third-party software? Why can't I use Adobe's Flash Player for it? I've installed every Gnash plugin I could too and it still won't work, I need help!

  • @theif519 you should add the rpmfusion repository to your system. that has the official Adobe flash player in it. Alternatively, you could just install "easylife" (very easy to install, works sort of like Ubuntu Tweak, but with fedora-specific information).

  • does anyone know how can i change a windows drive letter in fedora?

  • hi i just started using linux and i choose to install fedora insted of ubuntu and its really pretty good bt there is just one problem hw do i connect to Wifi?

  • I want to name my son Windows and my daughter Seven

  • We get it, you're a Arch-user and everything that Fedora has that Arch doesn't have "doesn't apply to me, so it's not worth mentioning"....

  • @Computerphile I mentioned what was in the release notes, I made some comparisons to my existing setup. Yes, I mentioned Arch a few times. I'm an Arch user primarily, so I draw on my experience. After having a rough week dealing with a new Fedora release (audio issues with low-quality flash, a long-term bug, Nvidia proprietary driver issues), I was displeased, and this video was the result.

Since that time, I've made a video demonstrating and praising Fedora 15 Alpha, which you might like more.

  • @thisweekinlinux: I have the same problem with the Audio in flash files, but I'm not sure what to think caus e some videos sound really good, some other sound crappy, but If go to W7 the same videos sound perfect.. any idea when F15 will be released?

  • @mztguitar a large part of it has to do with the quality of the flash file. if you're watching something at 240p here on YouTube, it'll sound bad. if it's higher, it should be ok.

F15 should be out near the end of May.

  • hey, i'm a linux noob, and i've got fedora 14 to dual boot with my windows os, lets say if fedora 15 is released, do i have to get the iso image and do all that stuff just to upgrade from fedora 14 to 15 or is there an easier way?

  • @crapytutorials I haven't tried myself, but the Fedora wiki mentions using the DVD of the new version to do it, or installing and using an app called "preupgrade"

  • @thisweekinlinux thnx for the info, like i said, i'm a linux noob, how can i connect to a wireless network in fedora? i've got the drivers and stuff all i need to know is how to connect

  • @crapytutorials If you're running Fedora with Gnome on it (like I was in this video), you should be able to just click on the NetworkManager icon in the upper right corner of the screen, near the clock. In the dropdown menu, if your wireless card is working correctly, you should see a list of wireless networks. Select yours, give it the password (if you have a password set for it) and you should be good to go.

  • @thisweekinlinux hey, srry for bothering you again, but you said that there should be a list of networks if my wireless card is working correctly.....there's not, how can i fix that?

  • is fedora use that rpm (?) packaged based system? whats yum?

  • @acerookie1 it uses RPM, yes. Yum is the package manager for Red Hat-based distributions, like Fedora.

  • first time i tried Fedora, package manager is SLOW so i went back to ubuntu's dpkg

  • @91jmda if you're interested, check out "yum fastestmirror". definitely helps a bit.

  • Fedora is the best! I love it!

  • Ubuntu or Fedora? im not asking for a war, just an opinion and why. i am an ubuntu user, considering fedora. becuase i do not like the way ubuntu is going.

  • Ahaha. Windows 7 Ad on Linux first look. GG

  • @doblaze LOL

  • @BarFaniBhaloo that's a matter of opinion on both points. I happen to like being able to actually customize my operating system, and not have to worry quite so much about virus infections. :)

  • @thisweekinlinux Can i customize ubuntu 10.10 like fedora ?

  • Comment removed

  • @BarFaniBhaloo It really all depends on your mindset. I work in a Windows environment, and I'm 100% Linux at home, with no issues. My wife uses Windows on her laptop, and can interact with my Linux server for filesharing and printing.

If Windows works better for you, by all means use it. I'm not here to force Linux on anyone. I was just replying to your blanket statement that "Linux is very difficult, windows rocks!", when in my experience, it's just the opposite.

  • @thisweekinlinux hmm i got your point, thanks GOD bless you:)

  • @BarFaniBhaloo : Have fun with windows... but people who like GNU/Linux can't stand windows for the lack of customization... In case of GNU/Linux user is the king and OS is the slave... it's other way round in case of windows... no hard feelings though!!

  • @BarFaniBhaloo Linux is for who wanna learn something than just click click click.

  • fedora is created by ubuntu?

  • @alessandroguio1993 Fedora is another distribution from Linux. Same with Ubuntu.

  • @alessandroguio1993 Fedora is created by Red Hat Community which has no link with Ubuntu

  • @alessandroguio1993 No fedora is older than Ubuntu.

  • it needs something other then a YUM install method. plus it needs a way larger driver package for more lexmark printers and dell printers like the dell printer 720.

  • I want to name my son Linux and my daughter Fedora XD

  • hi again !! i am trying to install fedora to a laptop , i boot the cd it , start normaly for 5 seconds...and after that there is only a white screen and nothing more.. this spiciefic pc runs windows 7...and i suggested to the owner to try linux...so i want to install it whith w7 also...but i dont know why it doesnt start...if you ever find time and you might know how to help me please answer to me... bb keep on whith more good videos !!

  • @giorgos584: I started to use linux some months ago and just last week decided to double boot my Win7 Dell and I had the same problem, I'm not sure exactly what was wrong cause after what I did I didn't want to go back and see what was the problem so after some tries using the CD, went to download a fedora14 from another source and ended up finding LiveUSB... so I installed it using my usb, now is running nice and sweet. I love it even though still learning all the commands and stuff

  • @mztguitar :D ...i am allready shure that linux is great os !! yesterday i learned to do the same whith you ...instalation via usb.. i did it at my smal netbook , ands the laptop i want to install Fedora it is of a friend's , so i will try the same also and i will tell you if that was the problem . But one thing its for shure , once you meet someone trying to help you (especially to let you know about linux) you will do the same about anyone else you know

  • @giorgos584 Dont install this Ubuntu is much better than this

  • Do you prefer Fedora 13? Which version if not it?

  • @xilix1000 I liked 13 very well, and after using 14 for a while longer, it's a very stable distro. Looking forward to 15.

  • Not bad distro

  • Can i install OpenOffice and other system language in Fedora 14?

  • @SymHae Yes, you can. Fedora's got quite a bit of stuff in their repos, and if it's not there, RPMFusion has a lot more in it.

  • @SymHae Use Ubuntu open office is preinstalled and have language packs which you can easily install it is much better than this

  • @hsnan009 What about other system languages?

  • boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing :D

  • I have a problem with opening it in a VirtualBox

  • I feel that the strength of Fedora doesn't lie in using it as a desktop solution, or any linux distro for that matter. My use of it is purely as a home server (webmin, samba, vsftp, vuze, mdadm, lvm, mysql, apache, twonky media, tiger vnc, etc....) Been using it for a while now, especially considering microsoft's failure in releasing Vail. I'm glad the default is not bloated with stuff I'll never use. I do however have gnome installed and vnc into my server via ssh to use vuze. Vuze rocks.

  • fedora is superior to ubuntu, and i have been using it for a while now.

  • After installing a minimal system and building it from it's roots I can't go back anymore to distros sporting one or another interface no matter how easy is for you to install another one on top of it (name it GNOME, KDE, Awesome, etc.).

Said that, it feels sad to have found Arch and eventually Parabola GNU/Linux (an Arch Linux %100 Libre) because I know it will be really hard to leave this *GREAT* distro =D

    Good review anyways!

  • @martin77mdp Why do you have to leave Arch/Parabola? (I haven't heard of that one, btw). Use what makes you happy!

I agree, it's nice to have the minimal system, but occasionally it's nice to be able to set up a system without having to remember a bunch of commands. That's when I use Fedora or Ubuntu. When I need something going quickly and easily.

  • thanks for using a good micro!!

  • @Nyocurio thank you! I really like my USB microphone. :)

  • @thisweekinlinux I mean there's just too many let's player and reviewer with a bad micro and it's such a pain to listen to them

  • @Nyocurio oh, I definitely understand. :) It was a bit of an investment at first, but I think it's more than paid for itself at this point.

  • The 'G' in gnome is silent. You don't pronounce it. Like the 'K' in 'k'nife!?!

How do you get to your age and not 'k'now that?

  • @TheYouuTubeRipper the head of the Gnome foundation says it with a hard G. I got to my age saying it that way by listening to the people who created it. Thanks for asking. :)

  • @thisweekinlinux Yeah, well, the 2 guys who created it were Guh-Mexican (Mena and Icaza) so Guh-figure!

Originally, it stood for GNU Network Object Model Environment. It was intended to be a distributed objects framework but the project has sort of strayed from its original intention and as such, it's name has changed to "Gnome" and many people (in fact, the majority of people pronounce it like the little troll like creatures)

    Besides, ga-nome sounds silly.

    There's no place like Gnome!

  • @TheYouuTubeRipper you're definitely entitled to say it how you like, as am I. :)

  • waiting for a Fedora 20, maybe it will be stable and successful

  • @lassaad7 In your opinion, what is stable? I'm using Fedora 13 and it's more stable than any Linux distro i've used the past few years.

  • ATI Catalyst (fglrx) on Fedora 14 solved

  • @JeremyPassarelli ok, let's try another tactic. Reboot the system again. Hit a key at the countdown to get to a list. Hit "e" to edit the first entry. you should have 3 lines there. One that says "root(hd0,1)" (or something similar, one that starts with "kernel", and one that starts with "initrd". Correct?

  • @thisweekinlinux Thank you Jordan! My problem is fixed! I edited the kernel line, when I got into Fedora, I immedietly changed the GRUB config file to the changes I made. Even though I am not a programmer, you have really helped fix my problem! Thanks so mutch!!!! :o) :o) :o)

  • @JeremyPassarelli awesome! you have no idea how relieved I am that you got it working.

  • Comment removed

  • Now, I'm have problems with the themes! For example: the progress bar and right now, I'm using the theme that easyLife Installed (not Gliuche, because that's when I noticed the errors with the themes. Also, my when clock is supposed to say PM, it says AM. It also applies for AM, too. Ubuntu doesn't do this, so how do I fix it in my Fedora system?? Besides that, everything is fine!

  • @JeremyPassarelli trying to understand what's wrong. What about the theme is giving you errors? And it sounds like your clock is off by 12 hours?

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • @JeremyPassarelli you have to edit the grub.conf file. go to a terminal, type in "sudo gedit /boot/grub/grub.conf", then give it your password (I assume when you ran easylife, you told it to fix Sudo for you).

In the grub.conf file, go to the first line that says "title Fedora (version number)", then look for the first line that says "kernel" after that. At the end of that line, add a space, then "vga=0x318". Save the file and reboot.

  • @thisweekinlinux -- I think I killed it! HELP!

  • @JeremyPassarelli what happens when you try to boot now?

  • @thisweekinlinux - It shows it for a second, then says "mount: /dev/mapper is not a bock device (blank) Can't mount root filesystem (blank, blank) Boot has failed, sleeping forever." It says the mount thing 21 times. (blank) means blank spot. WHAT DO I DO?????

  • @JeremyPassarelli during the countdown right after startup, hit a key (spacebar). That should take you to a list with at least 2 items on it. You should be able to select the second one to boot to. it should be named Fedora, and have a slightly lower number version than the first one.

  • What is SELinux? PS: Why is it when you do a root command as a regular user, it says user so and so is not in the sudoers file?? How do I fix it?

  • @JeremyPassarelli SELinux is a security mechanism for Red Hat based distros (though any distro could use it, most are using AppArmor now, since it's in the mainline kernel) for policy controls.

The easiest way to fix Sudo on Fedora is by installing easyLife (easylifeproject. org). It's got a TON of things it can fix quickly and easily, like Sudo, some drivers, codecs, flash, java, extra apps.

  • @thisweekinlinux After I installed easyLife, I launch it, choose my options, then I when I rebooted, the boot screen is way messed up! It has a bar at the bottom! HELP! How do I get everything back to normal?

  • @JeremyPassarelli I assume you've got an Nvidia graphics card and you installed that? (that's a side effect of the proprietary Nvidia drivers).

A thread I just found on the Fedora forum mentions adding "vga=0x318" to the end of your boot line to be able to see the boot screen again. Does the rest of the system work ok?

  • What is SELinux? Second Edition Linux? LOL!

  • first time i used fedora, it was fedora core 6. while it was the best experience ive ever had with linux, needless to say i havnt used any fedora past 6. im on ubuntu now, but when unity comes out on 11.04 I'll need to find a new distro.

  • I had that scrolling problem on the web with the nivida and fedora; to get around it just switch off smooth scrolling in firefox. I suspect a nvidia driver problem.

  • @slenpree interesting.... I'm going to reinstall Fedora tomorrow, so I'll end up trying that out. thanks

  • BTW Id like good reasons for AppArmor over SELinux because I can think of several for it not to be used. Im open to conversion though. Last I looked AppArmor appeared to be a old idea breaking security for simplicity to the extent of endangerment. The later being my opinion though. I'd like to see some real hitters of the community review and debate both.

  • I started a long reply but then realized it doesnt matter as the majority of your review is either subjective or incorrect. You sound(yes your tone) like a fan-boi rather than a real review. Watch your own video a few weeks down the road and listen to yourself. Sorry, I wont rate the video in this case. Change isnt always good. Some times fixing is better. Arch is good but why are you making a reference? We have some base line here? LSB by chance? If so, redo. Yes Im aware of their opinion.

  • @daeamarth Wow. a bit harsh, man.

This wasn't a review, just first impressions (thus the title).

I realize I sounded a bit harsh about it, and I was probably a bit tainted by watching a review beforehand. Honestly, I think i recorded this video three times because I was having issues with screencasting at the time, could have impacted the review as well.

Guess I'll reinstall Fedora, give it another shot and do an actual review...

  • @thisweekinlinux I dont see how Im being harsh. If you listen to yourself you indeed sound fan-boish. I personally dont care about Fedora in that regard but you come across as making a baseline comparison on items that are incorrect or subjective(more the later, see your tone). Anyhow, I didnt mean to sound harsh. If I came across acidic I apologize as thats not my intention. Much is lost in text which is not in tone.

  • @daeamarth agreed, it's really hard to read subtext and tone through text.

I just rewatched the video, and I do sound like an Arch fanboy (I have to admit, I am, but that shouldn't be coming through, so apologies there...).

End of the day though, it's difficult to "review" something without being subjective...

I'll just have to reinstall and give it another fair shake...

  • @thisweekinlinux I understand the difficulties to some degree. It came down to the repeated tone on comments. I also agree F14 doesnt have "much" in the way to offer in change. Thats not necessarily a bad thing. Anyone here an E user? =) I dont think you need to reinstall and do another review. When a review is done it frankly needs to be monotone(both in feeling and tech), IMHO. Granted this doesnt get the hits but it does make for a responding and continuous audience. Just my 2C MIW.

  • @daeamarth I have to disagree there. When I see a review that's just listing off the contents of the menu and offering nothing more (lacking in feeling), I find it boring. But I do agree though that I need to tone down the "personal" aspect of it a bit. I should mention my experiences with it, but don't let my opinion of the distro get in the way of the review.

  • i have tried arch, fedora 14, arch, debian testing, mint 10, and ubuntu 10.10 on my new laptop and oddly enough fedora 14 has the best performance and has the largest amount of my hardware working :p

  • @nolanhester1 yeah, every system sort of has its own personality, and no one distro is perfect for everything.

  • @thisweekinlinux I agree, It's so strange sometimes :)

  • Fedora has turned into a really crappy distro, which is sad because back in the day it was one of the best around. Every fedora release something else is broken. It just seems like a dumping ground for half baked software.

  • What happened to fedora, a couple of distros ago it was starting to look good!

  • @MriBackup They're doing more "behind the scenes" work, I think.

  • looks like garbage.

  • thanks for the vid

  • Doesn't sound so impressive :|

Kinda sad since I was thinking about giving Fedora a try.

  • You got a broken update arrow! Is something wrong with one of the source?

  • @TheRanblingjohnny I don't think that's the broken update arrow, it was a "security update available" notification. (unless I was looking at the wrong thing).

  • Re: libjpeg-turbo, you might have missed the point. While you're right that loading a single image is fast enough for most people without turbo, I think libjpeg-turbo is mainly intended to speed up remote desktop programs that use a continual stream of jpeg screenshots. Try comparing a fullscreen remote desktop connection, Fedora 14 vs Arch? (I haven't tried it myself, just sayin...)

  • @angularsofty hm, I might indeed have missed the point then. :P However, Fedora's the only system that doesn't appear to work with my remote VNC connection. Weird. (of course it's connecting to an Arch system. maybe that's the issue)

  • i tryed running a live CD. it seems pretty good, but theres a major problem. When i run on battery, without the AC power, the screen goes blank, and i cant adjust the brightness. After doing a little search, it seems to be happening with many people on Ubuntu 10.10 too. No idea why. Have you tried it on your laptop?

  • @MattDurden launchpad bug bugs.launchpad. net/ubuntu/+bug/669044

  • Wait there is Office stuff installed by default. Wait did you install through the DVD or the live CD? I always install through the DVD. I get more apps installed by default that way.

  • @DrG241 I use the CD generally. I would assume something 3.3Gb would have a lot more stuff preinstalled. :P

  • @thisweekinlinux Yes :P I download it from the Aarnet mirror, which you probably don't know of because it is Australian but if I download it from there, it doesn't use any of my internet quota.

  • @DrG241 yeah, I'm not familiar with it. Luckily, we don't have an obvious internet quota here. :) I download entirely too many distros.

  • @thisweekinlinux CURSE YOU ALL!!! :P

  • He has a point. There's not much of a change from Fedora 13 to Fedora 14. I have it dual booted on here (Windows 7 Ultimate for the main OS) and I have got to say, as he said, there's not much difference.

  • man,you should do more episodes and videos,I enjoy all your news and distro reviews.

but i was wondering which distro u use now as your main,i thought you said you are an ubuntu user, but later you said you spend alot of time on arch.

  • @AlaaHossam Thanks!

I'm currently running Arch on my main desktop, and Fedora 14 on my laptop (though that might change at any time). I use Ubuntu regularly as well, but I've been trying out new things on my laptop to keep my skills sharp. :)

  • Please do a review using KDE :)

  • @goblend might have to do that. :) They made some significant changes to the KDE version.

  • You should review the DVD version!

  • Comment removed

  • I've been trying to stay away from Fedora and Ubuntu now since the updates, they just been having some issues with previous drivers that use to work out of the box and programs like gtk-recordmydesktop even has issues running. So I'm trying to figure out where to move to now. I've been thinking Linux Mint 10 lately. But yeah Fedora didn't really impress me much..

  • I listened to the Linux Action talk about Fedora 14 and they made some valid points about this new release. Maybe I should run it in Vbox to check it out

  • RedHat is a supporter of the DocumentFoundation, so they support LibreOffice.

  • Not to turn this into a "Big Bang" discussion, but the episode where Penny gives Sheldon the napkin (used by Leonard Nemoy) for Christmas, is quite possibly the funniest thing I have ever seen on tv.

Thanks for another great review Jordan.

  • What I look for in a distro is mostly stability and looks. As long as it works, and looks good, I like it. To me, the included software is just merely "extra." I personally think that the Fedora theme for gnome isn't that good. The KDE version is nice, but I'm sure Kubuntu looks better (I haven't tried it, but I plan to.) It also seems that the KDE theme is a of a hog on my laptop, but its because its the worst laptop ever.

Basically, I stay away from Fedora, keep close to my Arch/Ubuntu.

  • @Purgatware I am indeed planning to talk about it. Thanks though!

  • Love TWIL and LAS! Fedora gets no love! Faster JPEGS!

  • boooring

  • nice video jordan

  • Cool review, you remind me on Leonard from Big Bang Theory.

  • @davorsite I'll take that as a compliment, though I identify with Sheldon a bit more. :P

    Bazinga!

  • @thisweekinlinux A compliment yes, love that show. I'm on Ubuntu few months so far and don't have any problems or wishes to go back on windows. Linux rules.

  • @davorsite Have you seen the clip from Big Bang Theory where Sheldon talks about using Ubuntu? Hilarious. :)

  • @thisweekinlinux yes, funny

  • wallpaper looks comic booky

  • @thejoesteiger A little. I'm a comic book fan. :)

  • When do you make a tutorial about installing an interface (GNOME because i hate KDE) on Arch?

  • @AdyGudus I made a tutorial about installing Gnome on Arch a few weeks back. :P

  • its quit weird that all of these distros like debian opne suse and fedora aren't showing real progress right now while ubuntu is pushing forward , were are they all ?

i remember a time in witch i would have chose fedora over ubuntu ,i miss the good "competition".

  • <3 Arch

  • haha how many times have you reformatted your laptops hard drive?

  • @spikespeigel WAY too many... I think 8 within the last 24 hours. (Of course someone inspired me to try out Archbang, and it didn't turn out well, so I've been on a distro-install spree!)

  • @thisweekinlinux What's up dude! Nice oveview of Fedora 14, always enjoy your channel. Man, it really is terrible Archbang didn't work for you. Check out the screenshot of my Archbang setup in the TWIL forum Arch/Chakra thread. Let me know what you think! :D

  • @riffzombie Thanks. :) I just saw your screenshot. Very cool. Honestly, I was really impressed with Archbang on the live environment. I'm going to give it a solid try in a VM, and when I have more time, I might throw it back on the laptop and try to fix the errors I had.

  • @thisweekinlinux Awesome! Glad you liked the screenshot. You know watching your Arch installation tuts inspired me to attempt an install on my wife's laptop. I just hope all goes well.... :|

  • fedora is ok i'm not really enthused about it, I prefer Ubuntu or Mint, Mint 10 final release should be coming out very very soon.

  • @invnd1987 not a bad idea. :) I've been meaning to get back into topical vlogs over there.

  • im not a fan of fedora im in the ubuntu camp :) teamm ubuntu!!!

  • @fighterpiolt1992 Cool. :) I'm in the Linux camp, though I'm not a zealot about it.

  • I like linux action show too.

  • @Hax0rPr0n I like sudo. :P I've gotten used to doing su -c 'command' though.

  • OpenOffice is installed with the DVD version of Fedora

  • @lindsaymobil22 cool. well the DVD is 3.3Gb, I would certainly hope it would come with an office suite...

  • LVM is actually a very nice technology even for a basic volume person haha. Pretty easy to do as well.

  • @FearedBliss the last time I used it was with Foresight Linux, and it caused weird issues dual booting it with Ubuntu. :P (of course that's been 3 years ago now...)

  • @thisweekinlinux haha it's been a while for you. Did you have a separate /boot and lvm as part of the kernel modules? That's how I do it in Arch haha. Try it again with Arch. You won't regret it.

  • great first look video, that makes me want to install Fedora 14 on my laptop myself and I am really thinking of doing that right now! :)

  • i watched the LAS fedora review too and i came away with this:

    F14 = F13

btw, just out of curiosity, does anybody
