This was presented as prime-time entertainment back in 1983-1984ish, I was about 16 at the time and I must say how lame it seems now.

Really? I'd watch this now. In fact, I just did. There have been better shows since then of course but there have been many many worse shows too. Some of them still on television today. Look at what is on Saturday night TV nowadays. Ant 'n' Dec's Push the Button, The National Lottery and You've Been Framed are just three examples of programmes that are worse than this. I'd be happy to watch repeats of some 70s/80s programmes instead.
