Led Zeppelin was the perfect band, with just ONE guitar, with a perfect singer, an awesome drum, and the best piano and bass player in rock history! if jimmy page didnt put a solo in this song, it´s because this song don´t need a solo. is perfect just like the original song is!
Just a horrific performance. EJ's solo wasn't much to talk about. The bit where he sounded like himself was alright, but the first half of his solo was shocking and don't even get me started on the first guitar solo!
This is not a good example of how well the Hip's guitarist plays. I've seen the Hip several times and, although I certainly wouldn't put him in a class with Eric Johnson, he doesn't suck by any means. The thing with jams like this is they are often totally unrehearsed and the musicians aren't used to playing with each other. So it ends up a bit muddled.
Now lets get something straight here. This is Ian Thornleys late great first band Big Wreck with Eric Johnson and the guitarist for the Tragically Hip. Granted the Hip guy sucks. But don't find Thornley guilty by association and a bad mix. Until you've heard him let loose on the bootlegs, and the occasional album cut? Hold your fire cowboy. Search for: Thornley - IanNoodle, or him jamming on Alice in Chains during soundcheck, or Big Wreck - SnowJob. Then we'll talk.
Now lets get something straight here. This is Ian Thornleys late great first band Big Wreck with Eric Johnson and the guitarist for the Tragically Hip. Granted the Hip guy sucks. But don't find Thornley guilty by association a bad mix Until you've heard him let loose on the bootlegs, and the occasional album cut at least. Search for: Thornley - IanNoodle, or him jamming on Alice in Chains during soundcheck, or Big Wreck - SnowJob. Then we'll talk. Until then, hold your fire cowboy.
First off I wouldn't know who Eric Johnson because of Big Wreck and this concert, yeah Eric Johnson is a great guitarist but Ian is a die hard fan of his and did payed a little tribute to him. Secondly Eric Johnson couldn't say enough great things about Ian, so if Ian is getting complemented from a caliber player like EJ how could make this him crap. All I can say is Eric Johnson is a great guitar player but lacks melody that all being said pretentious playing is boring its all about heart.
"trigjeeeh" said the smartest thing I've ever seen at one of these clips...everyone's always comparing gutarists, and it's meaningless, right? Fuckin'-A...they're having fun. What else is there?
his driver must've gotten wasted and took him to the wrong venue and EJ being the nice guy he is said I better help these poor fools before they kill themselves
these guys jsut make ej look bad....but ej is fucking like....amazing at guitar...probably one of the best guitarists alive...but those of you who dont appreciate his music...dont even argue, if you dont know how good eric johnson is then just like..go fuck ur self seriously
Tragically hip is tragically wasted on the finer points of Zep music to begin with. The added point of having EJ join the cast of misfits befuddles me. There are some nice textural elements here, but ground breaking it is not. TH probably should stick with thier own stuff and truly practice anothers music before trying to perform it live. Of course if this was 1969, WE would love it. Its all perspective I suspect...
As a hardcore Zep & EJ fan for decades, I have to say this is horrendous. What a godawful racket. EJ is the only one on stage with musicianship beyond that of a high school garage band, and the so-called "singer" doesn't even know the words to the song. He just made up a bunch of non-words and mumbled them for about 90% of the song.
Jeez, I bet Eric's embarrassed to have been a part of this joke. What a waste of 8 minutes of my life.
EJ's was the only solos here that had structure and feeling -with an opening, a theme and a closing. A concise musical statement.
Someone saying EJ doesn't play with soul makes me laugh out loud. You're entitled to your opinion, but for me, he shows more soul in one string bend than most of the grimacing-faced blues guys. BB was so impressed by Ej, he took him on the road with him once, hoping to help give him exposure. SRV thought Ej killed too.
Warning: Random guy who doesn't play guitar whatsoever but likes the music of Eric Johnson feels need to stick up for him/ make himself appear knowledgeable to the common peon through use of phrases which do not make any sense in the context of this video, and/or even guitar playing at all.
Buddy, grab a first act and get working on playing that illustrious D chord, cause you don't know what you are even saying LOL.
Calbanese, If you don't think things like structure, feeling, and a theme are relevant to a good solo, that's your priviledge. But my opinion is my priviledge as well. It does say something about your level of knowledge and understanding.
FYI, I have played for almost 20 years and have a degree in Jazz guitar performance from UNT, a fairly respected jazz school.
dude, what are you trying to prove? if you think eric johnson is a mediocre guitar player, you are horribly, ridiculously wrong. you obviously have no clue what you are talking about. you seem to have little knowledge about phrasing.
if you actually knew how to play along to EJ's music and knew a little theory you'd see how unique and insanely knowledgeable he about music.
Great round up of musicians. For those that say Eric killed these guys, well thats your opinion. Most of the people here know what Ian is capable of. EJ's a legend, he shows him quite a bit of respect on the stage. ESPECIALLY if you watched the rest of the show you see Ian give Eric the lead in many of Big Wreck's own songs. This show isn't about showing each other up, its about sharing musical talent and feeding off of each other musically. Shredding the fastest doesnt always steal the show...
thats not an opinion. you stated its not hard to play with more soul than ej. so by that statement, you seem to be able to tell how much soul someone plays with. please, let us in on your secret.
an opinion would be something like " i dont really like EJ. his playing doesnt do anything for me"
the fact that it's a comment, on a video, makes it opinion... even if I started it out by saying "it is an unequivocally objective fact...", it would still be an opinion. stop taking the internet so seriously. did I hurt your feelings because I don't feel like EJ has any guts in his playing? suck it up and move on - if that's the way I feel, it's the way I feel. get over it.
um no thats not what makes something an opinion. if i said "the sky is blue" does that not make it a fact now because its a comment on a video? dont be stupid. you cannot tell how much feeling someone puts into playing. the only thing you can tell is how it makes you feel. you obviously dont like it. thats fine.
jesus man, you're such a whiner. what I can say is the impression I get from someone's playing, and the impression I get is that EJ doesn't put a lot of feeling into his playing. he puts a lot of technical flair and scales to be sure, and he makes sure he has a specific patch cord, but he's no BB King or Stevie Ray Vaughan.
I'm not sure why i would say the sky is blue while watching the video, but yes, that is a fact because you can't argue it. but if I comment about playing, it's opinion
so because hes not a blues player he doesnt have feeling? eric plays with a lot of feeling. he just plays in a different style. i love his playing as much as BB or SRV. but if it doesnt do anything for you thats fine. but you cant really say he doesnt play with feeling. why would he play if he didnt feel any emotion from it? that doesnt make much sense. and hes actually doesnt use a lot of scales outside the minor, major and blues scale. being more technical doesnt mean less feeling.
did I say "only blues players have feeling? No, I didn't. I used BB and SRV because they play exquisitely, with a lot of feeling. I would add Pierre Bensusan, Michael Hedges, John Scofield, and many others to the same list.
I'm not judging his motivations, either. I'm saying that I don't feel the emotion in his playing.
As a fanboy of EJ, I don't expect you to either understand or agree, so let's just agree that Philip Sayce is mind-blowing and move on.
fair enough no you didnt say that. i guess i assumed. i understand that you dont feel the emotion in his playing but i think its a little much to say he himself isnt playing with feeling. i mean, you cant really prove that. you can only prove that you dont feel it.
