There is a strong free urban gardening thing here. Not quite EVERY spare piece of land but, very many. The city's given several empty lots to the citizens as free shared gardens all around town. There's little garden spaces amongst the skyscrapers of downtown.

Stores also put the greens/etc near the front doors so that when you walk in you think of it as "fresh" and are more likely to buy food there!

In a way it does, because of the conversion of carbon dioxide to oxygen: so the CO2's carbon needs to go somewhere.
