Many modern (1940's vintage) steam locomotives had air horns as well as whistles. Horns were considered more audible at speed than whistles, especially important when approaching highway grade crossings at 80 MPH or better!
2:18 i read a wikipedia article on the sp ac-9s and they're all scrapped. sp coulda donated a few of them to some museums or the also coulda been restored. why'd they scrap them all
I think I might just have to add these videos to my collection. I love SP steam, and seeing that GS-4 at 95 mph is just incredible. It's a shame they can't run the 4449 like that today.
WOW. Just...wow! Seeing 4439 going 95mph was just awesome! I'm almost tempted to waste a chunk of my tax return on getting these 2 volumes, and all the Glory Machines ones too!!!

It just doesn't look physically possible for those drivers to move THAT fast. You'd think it would just tear itself apart.

Yes, Danny Harmon narrated this and several other programs we produced.

Probably to make them sound more "modern". Yeah they seem kinda awkward on a steam loco.

how did they get the steam engine wistles to sound like semi truck horns?

That looks so great! I was putting off getting them but after watching this I may have too.

The air horns were used more than the whistles by SP. The audio on most of the clips is authentic, recorded when filmed.

It's a shame though. 5 SP chime :P

Love seeing SP steam trains in action! Kinda silly hearing the air horns used on them, but nonetheless very awesome to watch!
