I'm very interested on learning what his point in that video but I couldn't understand what he did ...plz any body explain what is the point that wanted to explain what is really doing in that vid?
@cobaltman2009 - Actually he has been 'quirky' for quite some time (at least from the 1960's at JKA honbu). His methods obviously work for him. The problem is that we are not all able to do what he can do or enjoy what he enjoys, which must make training in one of his classes at KWF HQ absolute torture. To see more Google Isaka Akihito (slow motion training).
Saw akihito sensei back in the 80s training/teaching and doing 'traditional' karate with jka. Was incredibly fast and supple in the asai mould. Whip like actions. Not stiff. Relaxed. His power to weight ratio was amazing. Cool stuff.
What a lot of people forget is that karate is infinite. Isaka Ankihito is a very open minded person and loves to experiment. Does it look weird? Yes it does. Can he do ashi jodan kekomi waza with 10 kg on each leg? YES! Gigo Funakoshi experimented and because of him karate changed almost 100% (stances, ashi waza, he introduced kumite etc). What I don't like about this video... why is everyone standing down? Why is he the only person working?
This is interesting. Can't hear what he's saying but it seems to me like he's hitting three points here - the effects of shock on the body after a strike, execution of technique while in unideal or transitionary positions, and emphasis on keeping the upper and lower body connected at all times.
I'm sorry but I disagree with you guys dismissing him so quickly. He's demonstrating something very technical, very fascinating, and delivering quite tremendous power through a small frame, without tensing, and while staying relaxed. Surely we should be exploring ideas like this, not simply saying they're rubbish and closing our minds. Or are we shotokan practitioners now too rigid to do so???!!
Really weird. To me, this is disgrace to Shotokan. This guy is shameless in pretending to be a Shotokan Master. Not even affiliation with Yahara sensei can justify this clown's behavior.
Embarrasing, weird, bizarre...I can't find enough words to describe this. Please stop uploading this guy's videos, or at least call it differently. This is not shotokan or anything likely, you can call it "how to throw a punch and look stupid while doing it". Jeez....
This is the worst demonstration of makiwara training I have seen in over 40 years of Shotokan training and teaching. But all high ranking karateka have their followers who attempt to justify their sensei's actions. You only have to look at Shotokai which was originally the same as Shotokan (the breakaway was politically motivated) but became soft under Harada's influence.
If you're are punching correctly you don't try to hold the board out. Finish your punch sharply through the boards resistance. Trying to hold the boards out usually leads to push punches with no actual impact. He may use odd stanches but he's just trying to make the point that if you can use your leg and hip properly you can get power from any position. Search JKA karate rock to see Tanaka hitting the board at the first for a good clear example of makiwara training.
"pathetic," NO. I do see some differences (things I'd not do...)in how MY system uses and trains on the maki, but I think that the differences come from HOW and When the punches are delivered--as in focus of training and the base system. I see a lot of "northern" butsuri in his appliations. Thanks for the video.
He makes a lot of mistakes in transferring power into the makiwara!! Sad commentary on KWF makiwara training, I see his shoulder and elbow giving way plus other problems.
ffs you are all stupid...theres only a certain way to punch a makiwara board...or you break your hand...and isaka sensei is a 6th dan...hes one of the best...ive trained with him...hes better at all the slow motion muscle strengthening meterial...also isaka sensei had bad bones...he needs the gloves...everyone else doesnt use gloves and the gloves are really glove there like finger width ffs...dont diss it...you try it...and youll see
This is bullshit.

I'm unsure what the instructor is saying.
Is he advocating relaxing every muscle in the body in order to use it in a whip-like way?
