butterflies represent profound change . they also represent fags LOL just kiding man i like your art. as a matter of fact i'm an electromechanic student right now and i will try to make one of thoes dragonflies my self . good video.
For the song, "Baccantes" and other original music by mrfixitrick, see my iDisk Public Folder. On a Mac, my iDisk can be accessed with "mrfixitrick", no password required. (Click on "Go" menu/ iDisk /Other user's Public Folder) Windows users, look up "How to access Mac iDisk"
The music is "Baccantes", a live track I put together with a synth. It's available on my iDisk at mrfixitrick, along with more of my eccentric tunes. E-mail me if you have trouble accessing it.
The Dragonfly is made from one continuous piece of wire, starting with the tail by wrapping around a length of nail held in a vice.
I am working on an Instructable that shows how to make the Dragonfly step-by-step. Subscribe to my Instructables site to get a notice when it is ready. (use link in "more info" >>>)
Electricity flowing through the copper wires causes a magnetic field which interacts with the magnetic field of the magnet. The forces cause the rotation of the wires, or the magnet, or both. See "Lorentz Force" or "Homopolar Generator" in wikipediafor best info.
this is normaly bepolar e-motor. second contact is down, through the magnet. It is not constant, but sometime it take the e-energy and collect it in the kinetic power of the rotor.
You could use insulated wire as long as the copper conductor touches both the battery top, and the magnet at the bottom. It must be a continuous wire.
These dragonfly and butterfly motors are not very efficient. Much energy is lost in heat and resistance.
Some homopolar motors are very efficient. Google "Naval homopolar" for info on how new 25,000 horsepower homopolar motors are powering the latest naval vessels with the most efficient and quietest electric motor in the world.
What you see as the base IS the magnet. It's a powerful neodymium magnet available from a shake-type flashlight, or from K&J magnetics. Such as the # D99 which is a 9/16" x 9/16" neo magnet for $2.75
Yes, it's hard to believe the simple principle of the homopolar motor. We are taught to think an electric motor needs a segmented commutator, or lots of parts!
The dragonfly wings do vibrate like a dragonfly. The butterfly wings need to have a different arrangement, with perhaps thinner wire at the hinge point, to flap.
I say, don't just think about it...try it! I hope to make an instructable soon on "how-to" make one.
Ok, I just changed the link in the "more info"; my public iDisk should work with mrfixitrick as username (no password), and should show four folders public access. (go to MrfixitRicksMusic)
Sorry for the hassle...I thought it was working ok. I was wondering what operating sys do you have?
Thank-you. That was one of the most personally meaningful comments I've had. If even a few others are inspired from my work, then this visit to the planet has been worth it.
It's been hard work, and I am charging $50 (Canadian) each plus shipping. That includes the wire-formed sculpture, a neodymium magnet and tuning instructions.
Proceeds will go to support my current and future experiments.

My music is open and free. And often offbeat...literally!
This piece I did using Absynth for the Mac. I used the mouse to play the on-screen keyboard. It was done using one instrument and in a single take.

Thanks for the idea
And for your time posting

Glad to hear you are trying a dragonfly. I think it's time for them to emerge all over the world!
I used 20 gage copper wire used in arts and crafts, and used a piece of steel coathanger in a vice as a mandrel to wrap the wire around.
