Remember watching this at the end of my trek in 2008. 624-D9 was our trek. This trip was a life changing experience and I'm honored to have been given the opportunity to do it all again with my brother this upcoming summer!
Been Lead Advisor on 3 Philmont Treks and went through Climbing and Rappelling Course with PTC...every time I see this clip it chokes me up...Thanks for posting this!!
This video was left at Philmont many years back and to this day no one knows who taped it, were its from or what crew it is in the film. One of the great things and wonders of Philmont.
Philmont was the highest accomplishment of my scouting career, next to earning Eagle Scout. I will always value that once in a lifetime experience and I can only hope that I will have another opportunity to return again. Philmont 2009: 710C - Rescue, CA
A few weeks ago marked my 2nd year since I've been to Philmont. These videos posted on YouTube make me feel like I never left, and the place is around the corner from my house. (Which is isn't, I
just got back from Philmont, Treck 31, 616-S2, closing campfire was amazing. does anyone know the name of the song they sing at the campfire where the chorus says, "and she asked why" etc.??
i remember philmont very well, i was there 3 times that was over 8 years ago, an if i had the chance to do it again i would do it in a heart beat, i remember meeting waite phillips and his son, every time they would show up at the ranch they would greet an talk to everybody they always came in a limo with a set of bull horns on the hood, lol
Just watched this film last week. Hard to believe 2 weeks can go that fast. Having served my country and rucked all over Ft. Bragg and Ft. Benning, this time I actually got to enjoy the whole moment without looking for OPFOR, and of course not looking for Tangos like I did three years ago. Very glad to have shared the time with my son. Thank you Lord, Waite Phillips, and the BSA.
Ooo-rah! I've gone 3 times with my 2 sons and will go a 4th time in 2 weeks, could be my last? Never did anything like this with my Dad. Quality time to the max. Roger that on having a good time minus the bad guys. Nice to know there aren't any VC in the tall grass, that's my generation! Nice to hear from you.
Holy shit, this song brings back so many memories. I went to Phil Twice, once in July 05 and then again in July 07...it was truly awe inspiring experiances...
I told myself i wouldent miss it...yet I cant help but be nastalgic when i watch this
I WANTA GO BACK TO PHILMONT!!! The best tribute to philmont ever. There are only 249 views of this video on October 7, 2007 but everyone of those viewers looks back on those times as the greatest times of their lives and know that it will last with them forever. I love the place. I would go back in a heart beat. Cheers to Waite, to philmont, to the staff, to The Boy Scouts of America. I WANTA GO BACK TO PHILMONT!!!
Hi, thanks for the note. Was it the same closing with the video of Philmont scenes, the modern Boy Scout composes a letter to his grandfather as he sits by the campfire, and then this historical video?
The song is called "October Sky," from the movie soundtrack of the same name October Sky about some kids launching their own rocket. The soundtrack CD is very hard to get and prices seem to be over $60!!
It is puzzling isn't it? Source is unknown. Almost like some early scout troop filmed their trip to Philturn (yes!) in 1940? and it included stops at many famous western landmarks? That's my best guess?

roflitsjosh 3 years ago
nice we got most of those: Baldy, Commanche, Phillips, Big Red, Black, Shaefer's Peak, and the Tooth, and i meant to say 618-S2 not 616
christianrocker13 3 years ago
yeh i forget we did comanche too, and if u look at the map we did black mt the hard way
2,000 feet in one mile
roflitsjosh 3 years ago
we did that too, it was painful. we sat in balck mt camp for 2 hrs b/c it was storming, and then when it slowed down went up the mt.
